I had made a series of plywood characters to put in the yard for the holiday season. After carefully priming and painting the surfaces, I planned to brush on Rustoleum Varathane Water-Based Ultimate Spar Urethane from a quart container to seal the cutouts. Imagine my horror when the urethane-dipped brush SMEARED my paint! It was only the black paint, too, which was so odd. To resolve this issue, I bought a spray can of the same product and used it as a base coat first, then I continued with brushing on the urethane without any issues. I did one coat of the spray, then two additional coats brushed on. I could have used only the spray can for all the coats, but I had already invested in the quart container. And if I was spraying on, I probably would have done four coats total. The satin finish is excellent for the outdoor plywood cutouts - note that a matte finish usually looks hazy, and glossy might be too bling for you lol.

I have used spray cans many time over my life span. But I have never had a spray tip spit/splatter material. It DOES NOT create a fine mist like every other can I have ever used. It is more like a splatter. Worthless as a sprayer. The material is runny, or the splatter puts out a lot of material. I had to brush out the entire item each time I sprayed. The actual product seems good and I like the finish... although it is more of a semi gloss. Too much sheen.

I have used a lot of spray paints and finishes and don't have particularly high standards, but this is by far the worst I have ever used. To say the coating is uneven is a gross understatement. It sprays in gigantic droplets with very sparse coverage-- getting a smooth coat is impossible without manually brushing afterwards due to how ridiculously poor the atomization is. Even if you were to brush and sand between coats I have no idea how you would get a smooth final coat due to the abysmal atomization.
