It depends on how long the politician has been in office, it only reads to -58 degrees F.

can it be used with candy or oil?

Yes, I’ve successfully used this for oil. In fact, I’ve accidentally deep fried this thermometer at least three times with no problems afterwards.

The metal probe is definitely waterproof. It is even KY Jelly proof. The red plastic is about 46.7% waterproof at room temperature, above that, I am not sure. I wouldn't place it in the microwave on HI and boil it to test the percentage however.

How long does battery last before it has to be changed ?

A long time. It uses one AAA battery. They're cheap and readily available most everywhere
