Does anyone know why they are calling it pokken tournament and not pokemon tournament?

Because the name is a pun on "Tekken". Pokemon + Tekken= Pokken. Also, I fancy "Pokemon Tournament" to be both ambiguous and boring. No doubt the makers of the game felt samely.

What are the controller options available other than the game pad and the special controller?

Pokkén Tournament-Compatible Controllers:- Wii U GamePad- Wii U Pro Controller- Classic Controller Pro(A Wii Remote Controller or Wii Remote Controller Plus is required to use this controller.)- Pokkén Tournament Pro Pad

does it work with an american wii u?

Yes, this is the North American version of the game. It has Japanese writing on the cover art just for show and is called Pokken as a combination of Pokemon and Tekken (the fighting game series).

how many characters in the game

There are a total of 16 characters (at release). There are two Pikachus and two Mewtwos, which might seem a bit "lazy", but each of them still has a different playstyle and attacks, so you can still count it as 16.
