Green-growing secrets and powerful magic await you at Misselthwaite Manor, now reimagined in this bewitching graphic novel adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s beloved tale. From Mariah Marsden, author of the critically acclaimed Anne of Green Gables: A Graphic Novel, comes this second installment in a series of retold children's classics. Ten-year-old Mary Lennox arrives at a secluded estate on the Yorkshire moors with a scowl and a chip on her shoulder. First, there’s Martha Sowerby: the too-cheery maid with bothersome questions who seems out of place in the dreary manor. Then there’s the elusive Uncle Craven, Mary’s only remaining family—whom she’s not permitted to see. And finally, there are the mysteries that seem to haunt the run-down place: rumors of a lost garden with a tragic past, and a midnight wail that echoes across the moors at night. As Mary begins to explore this new world alongside her ragtag companions—a cocky robin redbreast, a sour-faced gardener, and a boy who can talk to animals—she learns that even the loneliest of hearts can grow roots in rocky soil. Given new life as a graphic novel in illustrator Hanna Luechtefeld's whimsical style, The Secret Garden is more enchanting and relevant than ever before: A fresh, visually stunning retelling of one of the most beloved children’s classics Playfully teaches lessons about kindness, resilience, and emotional transformation A richly visual reading experience well suited to emerging and reluctant readers ages 9-11 Additional features teach readers about the life of Frances Hodgson Burnett and the history of British colonialism that contextualizes the original novel, making this a valuable classroom resource and literary companion. For young readers, fans of classic literature, and anyone who loves beautifully illustrated stories about growth and discovery, The Secret Garden: A Graphic Novel invites you to step inside a world of mystery and magic. Open the book and uncover the secrets waiting to bloom. Review: Absolutely beautiful and a great introduction to TSG - I absolutely loved reading The Secret Garden when I was young and it was a delight to be able to share the story with my 9 year old. She loved the story and the illustrations and wants to read the full novel now. The quality of the graphic novel is incredible, the illustrations are breathtaking, the text is easy to read (from a font standpoint), and the story is timeless. If you’re on the fence about buying this for your young reader, I would encourage you to make the purchase. I bought all of the graphic novels in this collection. Review: First graphic novel - I have never read a graphic novel. When I was a kid I read comic books. This is not my preferred way to read. But I was glad I tried it

Colorful and Magical
I will preface this review by admitting I haven’t read The Secret Garden in years, so even though I love the story, I had forgotten quite a bit. As far as I can remember though, I believe this adaptation was true to the original and such a lovely way to remind me of a story I loved as a young girl. This graphic novel was magical. The illustrations were gorgeous, colorful, and captured the story brilliantly. There was so much hope and joy throughout the pages. I especially loved the sections at the end that detailed Frances Hodgson Burnett’s life and the places featured in the story, as well as a note about the author’s choice to leave out the parts of the story where Mary lived in India “because they don’t do justice to the history of British oppression in colonial India.” The author does not dismiss these injustices and does give a brief summary of the history of colonial India as it pertains to the story. Perhaps my favorite additional feature is the glossary included in the back that describes words younger readers might not know, as well as the many flowers and plants described and depicted in the graphic novel. If you love The Secret Garden, need a refresher like I did, or want an easily accessible way to introduce a classic to younger readers, I highly recommend reading this adaptation and being swept away in the beauty of the garden!!

Potential misprint
I am only giving this low of a review because I believe that I was sent a misprint. Several of the pages were misprinted, and different layers of the ink do not align. This creates an almost 3D effect, but renders a few pages of text almost unreadable. If not for the misprint, my review would be 5 stars. The art is lovely, whimsical, and very fitting of the original story. The paper for the book is high-quality print paper, and the binding is well done.

Fun to read
This doesn't cover the whole story, but it's such a fun way to read the Secret Garden of you already have read the full classic, and know the story... The illustrations are wonderful, a lot of the pages made us laugh!!
