Review: Best Sharpener I've Ever Purchased - When this first arrived the wooden base had broken. I contacted the seller and they promptly sent me a replacement which arrived in perfect condition. I watched the online tutorial which I found really helpful and then set out to sharpen a couple of knives. I have to say I'm THRILLED with the results! I've tried using other sharpening methods over the last few years and none of them have sharpened my knives like the Sagana Whetstone has. I immediately set out to cut some meat and veggies for a recipe and the knives cut through the food like butter. I'm incredibly impressed and highly recommend this sharpener! I've wasted money on other sharpeners in the past that haven't worked nearly as well. Review: Sagana sharpening stones - First, I really like this sharpening stone. So far I have had only three knives to sharpen but on all three knives the results were the same, very sharp. I do think that I like the 6000 grit side a bit more than the 1000 grit but with that said both sides do a wonderful job. I am still get used to this stone and will eventually figure it out better. The feedback I felt from both sides was really nice. By the third knife I could just about determine when I was getting a burr on the edge by how the feedback changed slightly. I feel that for the price of the Sagana stones you won't go wrong in purchasing. I am not a professional knife sharpener but I feel I do a more than adequate job in freehand sharpening.

It's a nice stone. It arrived on time and well packaged
It's a nice stone. It arrived on time and well packaged. The bamboo base looks nice compared to other stones in about the same price range. It feels nice to use and doesn't take a long time to soak (mostly due to the material). I only have on minor issue - the price. I can't say if it's a great stone or not - I'll see in a few years - but there are other lower priced options made of the exact same material. The only difference is they don't look as nice. If you care more about looks than saving a few bucks, buy away!

If This Is Your First Time Using a Whetstone, Don't Be Intimidated!
This was my first time using a whetstone--and I love it! I've got some very old knives (from a rental house, probably not sharpened in many, many years) that I thought might be beyond saving. My father uses an electric sharpener, which generally works pretty well, but did nothing for these extremely dull knives. So I did some research and decided to try this whetstone. Wasn't sure how difficult it would be, since I have zero experience with knives, sharpening knives, etc., but after watching the video I found it very easy, kind of fun (in a meditative, Zen way) and very, very effective. I found that after just a few minutes, I sort of got the feel for it, and began to be more comfortable with how to sharpen and with knowing when I was done. I've also just registered for some very special knives for my wedding, and am so glad that now I'll know how to care for them. This whetstone is also very attractive, and I couldn't be more pleased. I can't wait for my knives to dull, so that I can use this again!

Great stone.
A great stone. I've only used it once since i got it, but it put a great edge on my knife. It shipped in very secure packaging, to ensure it didn't break in transit. And they ensured me that if it had they would promptly replace it. It comes with a bamboo base, I'm not use to that and removed it half way through sharpening, but that's just personal preference. The base is very nice and comes with a rubber brace. I definitely suggest this stone.

The condition of knives in the average kitchen never ceases to amaze me; the vast majority of the time home ...
I've spent a lifetime working with knives, both as a professional clarinetist (making and adjusting reeds), and in my kitchen, cooking. In both areas I always make sure I have very sharp knives. The condition of knives in the average kitchen never ceases to amaze me; the vast majority of the time home chefs use knives that are appallingly dull. This stone is manufactured to fine tolerances, is packaged very thoughtfully, works exceptionally well for any price, and sells for a very reasonable price - less than many others. I also have: several diamond studded sharpening steels of varying degrees of fineness, which work fine in-between sharpenings with the stone; a slightly coarser stone as well (of 800 grit); and a honing steel, None of those is particularly expensive, so you might want some or all of them, too. But I am a fanatic. This two-sided stone is all you really need. If you are skilled, with it you can restore knives to like-new sharpness.

Works as described, perfect for the home chef
Does what it needs to do. I managed to resurrect a cheap knife from going in the garbage by spending some time on it. Watch any of the many videos out there on how to use a sharpening stone and you'll be doing this in no time. I soaked the stone in a container of water overnight. The base is nice, nothing really moved as I was using this on my counter. However, it does create a lot of mess as you're using it. I wound up placing some damp paper towels underneath as I was sharpening as this kept it level (a rag or towel wound create too much unevenness). This also caught most of the water that was coming off the stone. I kept a damp towel nearby to wipe up the blade every so often. I kept the container of water nearby so I could wash the blade. Overall, this worked perfectly for me. I'm no trained chef, I'm not a sushi chef, but we did just spend close to $1000 on some new knives and I wanted to get one of these to make sure those knives stay nice and sharp for years to come. This is an ideal stone for someone who just wants to make sure their knives at home stay sharp and safe. Make sure you use your honing steel in between sharpenings to maintain that edge.
