What if water does not come out around the black circle, is it broken?

No it is not broken. The water comes out of the opposite side of where it connects to the pool wall. It is the piece that you connect the hose to your pool sweep.

What size hose do you use with this?

We used the old hose that is already on our cleaner. It was a perfect fit.
