Import-only compilation highlighting the best of the guitar legend's shortlived late '60s outfit the Jeff Beck Group featuring Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood. 16 tracks taken from the classic albums Truth and Beck-Ola including 'Hi Ho Silver Lining', 'Beck's Bolero', 'Tallyman', 'Rock My Plimsoul' and more. EMI. Review: Great Combination of Guitar and Vocals - Beck's guitar and Rod Stewart's voiceโamazing! You will recognize many of these songs, whether you heard them from Jeff Beck or from childhood, but they are great. I love Morning Dew for Beck's Guitar, and I've Been Drinking for Stewart's voice. There's not a bad song on the album. If you're into the softer side of rock n roll, this album will suit you. Review: The Best of Jeff Beck featuring Rod Stewart - Good CD

Some of Beck's Finest Recordings!
This compilation contains the best tracks from the first two Jeff Beck Group albums from 1968 and 1969. Moreover there are some great singles only tracks from the same period. Beck's first album "Truth" is possibly his greatest and most consistent release. 7 of the tracks come from that album. "Beck's Bolero" is in all but name the Yardbirds, in the same line-up that did "Happening 10 Years Time Ago" and the "Blow Up" performance. Beck's version of Willie Dixon's "You Shook Me" sounds a lot like early Led Zeppelin; even Rod Stewart sounds like Robert Plant. Other highlights from that album is the re-recording of "Shapes of Things", which has been slowed down a little making it an ever greater song. Their second album "Beck Ola" is represented by 5 tracks. The album is not nearly as strong as "Truth" - the material weaker, some songs go on for too long and Stewart's vocals can be a little overstrung at times. Best track from that album is "Plynth". Among the single tracks "Tallyman" is a great mod/pop-art piece sounding like Creation or the Who. Written by Graham Gouldman. Another hit-single was "Hi Ho Silver Lining" - a commercial song featuring a very unorthodox guitar-solo from Beck. Sounding quite a lot like the Yardbirds. The CD is very recommendable for fans of the Yardbirds - though the re-release of "Truth" with bonus-tracks may be an even more satisfying investment.

Not my thing
I grew up hearing that Beck, Clapton, Page, & Hendrix were the gods of guitar. Of course, this was in the 80s and I heard Randy Rhoads, EVH, etc before I came across the others. But, I still always want to hear great players of any genre and made a point to listen to those guys and see if I could pick up on what everyone was so stoked about. Clapton, Hendrix & Page were ubiquitous on the radio so I knew their stuff, but I was not familiar with Jeff Beck. So, when I saw this CD used for a steal I figured, why not? Frankly, it not only did not grab me, but I found very little to like about it - I did not like his tone, I thought the playing was solid, but nothing special, and the songs were flat out bad. Maybe if I heard this stuff fresh in the 60's it would have seemed innovative or something but his music has really not stood the test of time. I should have just YouTubed it.
