What type of battery does it take?

Hi Amanda, It takes 2 AA batteries. :) Thanks!

What makes the smoke? And is there a way to turn it off? I have a bird and have to be carful with air quality. Thank you

I don't think it can be turned off, the smoke is faint but smells electrical. Use own judgment!

how big are the cars?

Total length is a little under 3 feet.
