Grammar for a Full Life: How the Ways We Shape a Sentence Can Limit or Enlarge Us

I loved this book. I am now a different reader - meaning I notice grammar and attach different meaning to the text because of it. It has provided a more playful and empowered approach to writing. As a teacher, I will use a lot of the lessons with my students. But, honestly, it was most helpful in thinking about my communication patterns. I wrote this entire review without an exclamation point: that’s on purpose. It was truly a surprise. Who knew a book about grammar could be a empowering and informative.

A friend with a ph.d in theater recommended this book to me. Surprised at how easy it is to read. Very good for English majors or theater .majors or anyone like me, baffled by my native language. (English) This book should be required reading in schools.

. . .and I was not disappointed. I like this author's approach to what writing says about the writer. I wish I were young and energetic enough to find a grant to study of the author's assertions that happen to agree with my own, particularly about the passive voice. Bottom line is that I am not sure I learned all that much.

Intriguing essays about how grammar shapes the way we perceive ourselves as speakers and writers. This is a delightful read for language lovers.

This book is filled with ways to improve one's writing. The author projects some opposing ideas as to making use of passive tense. Interesting.

Although not popular, grammar is key to good writing and is often not seen as a "fun" part of English and writing classes. Knowledge is power and this book is a great tool in a teacher's arsenal!

Grammar for a Full Life(充実した生活のための文法）とう風変わりな書名に好奇心をかき立てられて購入した。中身は語法に関する実用的なエッセイという感じで楽しく読める｡はっとする指摘が少なくない｡例えば、動詞の歴史的現在に関して。下記のような歴史的現在はごく普通でどの文法書にも載ってる。 In An Ideal Husband, Oscar Wild skews… ただし次のような文脈では、どれほど鮮明に脳裏に焼き付けられた記憶であったとしても、歴史的現在は用いられない、と著者はいう。 *My late Grandma Hlady tells me never to forget about the folks who don’t grow up with advantages like I have. tells me → told me…とすれば問題はないが、単なる報告文になってしまう。 歴史的現在の雰囲気を出すには、I can still Grandma telling…がよいという。なるほどと思う（…like I haveが少し気になるが）。エッセイとして楽しめる書である。
