One of the best things I ever bought!
This sprouter is so fantastic, and so easy to use! If I could give it more stars, I would! I love alfalfa sprouts with a passion! On sandwiches especially. And they are so nutritious! I used to buy sprouts, but if you use a lot, they are quite expensive and not as fresh tasting as when you sprout your own. And when you run out, you either have to do without or make a trip to the store. Then I learned to sprout my own in glass quart or 2-quart jars. But unless you keep 2 or 3 jars of sprouts going all the time, it just does not make enough. and then you have to wait a few days for the next batch to grow. Plus, you have to keep the bottles lying on their side and you can imagine how my counter looks with 2 or 3 bottles lying on their side all the time. I should mention that unless the seed that was provided with the sprouter is better seed than the seed I have been using in the quart bottles, it seems to me a higher percentage of the seeds sprout in this sprouter, too. I think it is partly because you can't spread the seeds out as well in a quart jar. Also, with a quart jar, you have to rinse the seeds and then drain the water off morning and evening. And I think in the beginning stages of sprouting, this rinsing, no matter how careful you are, breaks the delicate new sprouts off some of the seeds, and then those seeds do not grow again. With jars there is always unsprouted residue which is hard to separate from the sprouts. But it seems every seed sprouts with this sprouter. With this sprouter, each tray sprouts about as much as you can sprout in a quart jar, but uses less seed. I use 2 teaspoons of seed for a quart jar and I use 1 teaspoon for each tray of this sprouter. This sprouter is so much more convenient, attractive, efficient, and space saving, and while sprouting in quart jars is not hard, this is even easier. There is no rinsing morning and evening, you just empty the bottom water catcher tray, rinse it well (wash it every few days), and pour fresh water into the top tray twice a day. The water from the top one dribbles down to all the other trays, and eventually into the bottom one. Each tray of sprouts is at a different stage of growth. I simply use out of the one with the largest sprouts, then when it is empty, I wash it and start a new batch in it so that I always have some sprouts available for whatever I want to use them on. When you clean a tray, be sure the drain holes are clear. Otherwise the water will not drain down properly. This is important because if the seeds get too much water, in other words, if the water does not drain off the seeds, or if a plugged tray does not let the water drain down to the next tray, so that those seeds do not get enough water, they will not grow properly. I always love it when I find a really good product and this is one of those!

Remarkably fine product. Even bought again. Fabulous sprouts.
This review is on the model 1200 sprouter, recently purchased, and does not concern previous models. I tend to review items only when they are particularly good or when they should be avoided and this sprouter is definitely one of the best. My previous experience has been with jar-type sprouters, which we never seem to be able to keep going for long, primarily due to issues with rinsing, drainage and yield. We have now had a couple crops of bean-type sprouts and the results have been very, very good. Based on the images supplied in the instructions we used about 1/4 cup of mung beans or 3/8 cup of (somewhat larger) adzuki beans, soaked for about 5-6 hours and then distributed amongst the four growing compartments. I have to admit that the quantities quoted would represent a slightly liberal interpretation of the sample images as we felt they appeared to be a bit too sparse based on our previous sprout experience. We rinsed the sprouts twice a day with about 1-1/2 cups (350 ml) of cool (not cold) tap water, which is ultimately caught in the bottom container. The majority of the water seems to drain through the four sprouting compartments in a few minutes, providing a rinse. At first, we were concerned about rot due to the amount of water that appeared to be retained in the sprouting compartments, but the results proved our fears groundless. As the seeds began to sprout, we continued to feel that we hadn't used enough of them, but in the last twelve hour period on the fifth day we were rewarded with a lush, full crop of sprouts. They had reached our favorite stage in which the tips of the first green leaves are emerging. They were so delicious I barely had time to measure the yield before they were consumed by family members. Four circular growing trays filled half of a gallon freezer bag or about 2 liters. These are the best results I have ever obtained from any sprouting method, and it was also the easiest. We are sorry we ever went back to store-bought sprouts. In addressing the negative reviews, I have to say that we have not tried it with smaller seeds such as alfalfa but I will update the review once we do. For now, we are busy growing yummy bean sprouts and have ordered a second Deluxe Seed Sprouter. Other than that, if you experience poor results, you need to be looking somewhere else for the problem; it's not with this product. If I thought I had bad soak or rinse water, at most I might treat it by boiling. As a biologist, the notion of "sterilizing" your seeds with chemicals or even vinegar in order to "prevent rot" leaves me cold. We sprout in the kitchen which is a constant 70F without nighttime dips. It's placed against the wall near a window so it has light, but is not in direct sunlight at any time. Can't even begin to address the review(s) that talk about "soil". Finally, we bought it for less than $20 and felt the price was more than fair for what we received.

Bought mine in 2018 -- still going strong. Great sprouting tray system!
I bought this set of stacking trays for growing sprouts in 2018. I've been using it consistently since then. It's important to follow the directions -- the user manual is a link on the product page. Water will not fully drain sometimes from the trays the first couple of days -- this is by design. Not a flaw!! Once the seeds start to sprout, the trays will fully drain. Also be sure to rotate trays, water a couple times a day, always drain the bottom reservoir before watering, and don't overcrowd seeds. Use exactly 2 cups of water when watering -- if you use too much water, it will leak all over. If instructions are followed, this tray system works like a dream. I have never had an issue with mold. Not once. If seeds get stuck in drain holes, a pin or toothpick and some running water takes care of it. Buy quality sprouting seed, and don't let your seed get too old. Soak seeds first, per instructions. Bad germination rates are not the fault of the trays -- old/low quality seed, not following instructions, etc. This tray system will sprout larger seeds and smaller -- I've tried many kinds over the years and never had an issue. Keep the trays clean, water frequently, and follow directions in the guide. I always rinse my sprouts in cold water once they are ready and store them in a ziploc or food container in the fridge with a damp paper towel. They keep up to 5 days. It's perfect -- harvest, refill trays, by the time I use up all the sprouts, I have new ones! I love mine! It is so easy to grow sprouts in this container. Comes with easy to understand directions and a small amount of seed to get started. Very simple to use. Easy to clean. Very very happy with purchase!!!! Worked perfectly for years!!

Great, easy way to sprout and consume more nutritious greens!
Very easy to setup and use, can't complain there. As others have mentioned in other reviews, it can be tricky to find the right amount of seeds to use. Use too many seeds and you risk crowding the container and they maybe don't grow quite as efficiently. Use too few seeds and you feel like "what if I could have grown just a few more" lol. The good thing is you get 4 trays so you can start off with a scarce amount of seeds in each and still get plenty collectively from all four trays. I've tried sprouting alfalfa, broccoli, radish, mung beans and chick pean sprouts ... all came out just fine. If you don't overcrowd, the mung beans and chick pea sprouts can grow pretty long. I was surprised by this as they didn't grow nearly as long when using a mason jar (maybe too crowded and/or not enough breathing room in the jar). The advertising shows that you can add more trays ~but~ there's no way to order just the growing trays, so if you want more trays, you need to buy a full set. Not a big deal, I'd prefer the option to buy just trays if I want. One caveat, if you're using smaller seeds like alfalfa, you might have to spend an extra few minutes cleaning the bowls when you're done. With the larger seeds, no big deal but the alfalfa seeds fit perfectly in the water filtering holes of the trays ... and tend to get stuck in there without washing out easily. I have to use a paper clip in those whole to get the hulls out lol. Not a huge deal but something to be aware of :)

LOVE THIS, and it's fantastic for my CHICKENS, GEESE, and DUCKS!
I waited several months before I posted this review. I wanted to make sure it was working great, and stood up, and yes it does! I love that the seeds sprout for me by the next day. I love that I can have this sit in a room by the window, and nature does all the work. I have 4 going at any time, so that the birds have fresh sprouts daily. I actually wish they made these in a bigger size. Sometimes I add more than recommended, like the Hard Spring Wheat or Mung Beans. The field peas I do admit need less. This is really for my girls that are working so hard to produce eggs. They run like race car drivers, weaving, to see who can get to the sprouts first. This lets me give them extra nutrition, full of vitamins and minerals, as a treat. They love everything I have sprouted in it so far, and my husband is partial to the radish seeds. My tip would be to rotate the sprouter a quarter turn everyday, so that they grow evenly towards whatever yoour light source is. I don't presoak, I found that presoaking the seeds tended to cause mildew, which is toxic for the girls, and a waste of seed and time for me. I really don't have to, because the next day, they have started to sprout. Also, handwash with dishsoap the bottom green container that the water drains into each day, before watering the sprouts. I find if you don't, there tends to be an odor, but, thats not from the product, but the seeds. Its a little tip. I also have zero problems loading these in the dishwasher, and added bonus for sterlizing. I also wanted to mention that the sprouts, depending on which seed you're doing, get a beautiful root base because of the container design. Which, if your feeding to birds like I am, they gobble up in no time at all. Also, when you sprout, you will see little fuzzies around the growth as they start to produce roots. If you look closely, you can see the water vapors trapped. Thats not mold or mildew, however, if you're not sure, a quick internet search will help you out. I have tried a dozen other products, and they were all garbage compared to this one. The mesh plastic design that some have, may look like a fantastic ideal, until you have to clean the roots out of there. This is the only one I use now, and definitely recommend it for human or chicken use :)

Simple, affordable way to have a continous supply of fresh, healthy sprouts.
Works as advertised, simple way to have fresh sprouts every day. (Often called a "superfood", Broccoli is my choice, bought from Todd's Seeds.) The growing process is simple, it just requires paying attention:Water morning and evening (I fill via a 16oz/500ml water bottle, the exact amount needed). Plan ahead to start a new tray by soaking seeds for several hours. I usually have the 4 trays loaded, each a different day/stage of growth, and a tray's amount of seeds soaking. When I remove a batch of grown sprouts from a tray, I immediately put the soaked seeds in that empty tray and put it back in the trays stack. The way to have continuous sprouts is to do continuous growing. The only "hard" part is determining how many seeds to add to a tray, which is really a question of how many sprouted seeds can fit once they have grown. Too many and they crowd each other and get tangled, difficult to use; too few and it was a missed opportunity to grow more. Since this varies with the type/size of seed and resulting sprout, it is trial and error. But the pictures in the instructions are a good place to start. I use a 1/2 tsp 2.5ml measuring cup, rounded scoop, for a single tray of broccoli seeds, works for me. The only "pain" part is getting the seed husks off the grown sprouts, to avoid putting the husks into the salad or (for me) pasta or whatever. But some folks like the crunchy husks and/or don't mind or notice how they taste. I shake/pull off most husks by putting the sprouts into a small bowl of water. Shaking in the water knocks off half the husks. Brushing with my fingers removes most others. The rest, I eat. If sprouts are desired more-or-less daily, it's good to start a new tray every day, so each of the 4 trays is at a different growth level. When I empty a tray, I reload it right then, so I don't run out. But if 4 days of growth stages isn't enough (or two or more people want daily sprouts), buy more trays! PS: A 1 pound bag of seeds last quite a while. And, you don't have to buy a bag of seeds immediately, the 4-ray set included a starter pack of seeds (Alfalfa came with mine), helpful to learn how it works, and good eat too.

Super simple, great timesaver,
I’m shocked at the negative reviews. I’ve had nothing but success and it seems foolproof. The instructions are very clear and make a lot of sense.. basically don’t overcrowd seeds, that’s it. It’s much more forgiving than other DIY or jars I’ve used before. It’s definitely worth the $. I really balked at spending the $20 thinking that’s a lot to spend on what I thought was just a pile of strainers, how lazy could I be? But Whatever went into the design it works perfectly. if you’re like me, and you tend to forget or are often running late, or your jar tips over, or you thought you drained all the way only to find a stinky mess the next day.. this simple gadget really makes all the difference, especially in a week long process. I have used some common sense: rotate your trays and every once in a while, if I notice the water in the bottom reservoir is a little cloudy (7-10 days with all 4 growing) I’ll lay the 4 trays out in the sink and give each one a good individual rinse.. and what I mean is fill them all with clean tap water and let them drain before putting it back together.. and I haven’t had any issues with rot, mold or funky smells. If you do get any of those Unpleasant outcomes, dump all your sprouts, clean your trays with Undiluted white vinegar (best way to kill molds and fungus, much more effective than bleach) And start again with fewer seeds in each tray. If you’re sprouting seeds/micro greens, you don’t need to soak first, but remember when they rehydrate they will double in size, so while it may not look overcrowded when the seeds are dry, it might be when they swell up with water. If sprouting dry beans or peas, soak overnight first for best results. A batch of micro greens can be harvested starting on day 3or 4 through 7 or longer right from the container. Mung beans take about 5-6 days and should be eaten or refrigerated within a day or two of hitting decent size. The beans in my photos are a bit past prime, and should have been put in the fridge yesterday before leaves started to appear. The leaves are a little bitter. Happy sprouting.

It just doesn't work with only few tiny holes per tray
I really wanted this product to work so I could sprout more sprouts in less space. It reminded me of a product I used in Europe which worked fantastically... sadly, the European version had openings where this one only has ridges not holes there, so the only way for water to go through is through a few tiny holes, some of which are tinier than the others (that seems to be a hole punching error). When I put water in the top feeder, it was just sitting there (see the last picture). I then had to manually try to run it through the holes by tilting the feeder above the highest tray and it took too long for all the water to go through the 2 or 3 holes that then ran water through it... long story short, I poured it in the top tray and it then didn't go anywhere. So when I did manually try to get it from one tray to the next the alfalfa sprouts did germinate but much slower than in the bottle I also use (I just lay them on the table and use a great top I got here on amazon as well). So with the heavy watering issues, I spend way too much time getting the seeds to sprout and grow and they did but they don't grow up like in the video, they grow sideways to the light of course so mind that when you want to use them stacked up on top of each other. I also feel these things have no or not enough airflow which causes the bad smell which never happened in the bottle. The bottle is easy, put water in and rinse take the water out and lay it down again. So the bottle sprouts much higher yield, faster, and no funky smell or work to manage them. I chatted to Amazon and decided to return. I do not need more work for smelly sprouts that take way too much work. I do like the product's material. EDIT January 2021 I purchased these stackable ones and they work great, you can add a lot more and they drain (right after watering you do it manually not by leaving the water in so no smelly old water or moldy sprouts yay) This is the simple set https://amzn.to/3pNxyS8 I got the big set myself that you store in a bucket https://amzn.to/3pQ7qGo or take the slightly smaller one here https://amzn.to/2XccnNB

Excellent sprouter
Fantastic little sprouter. I've used it for many varieties, and the alfalfa grows beautifully just as shown in the picture. Couldn't be simpler. I was previously using the jar method and I like this better . It's great to be able to start them every couple days on a new tray and have each tray done at a different time.

Very happy with this sprouting system
I was using the sprouting jars and stopped because I just found them to be a pain. This sprouting system is very very easy to use. With no need to soak the seeds first, then just alternate the seed bowls and pour your water into the water distributing top twice a day. It's effortless and the results are amazing. I definitely look forward to eating more sprouts now that growing them is easy peasy. I wanted to buy another to alternate so I always have sprouts growing but alas they are not available.
