Soft basswood great for beginners
Good practice blocks for beginners. Basswood is very soft and easy to carve. There are a good number in here to start practicing without worry. The larger two blocks are good to work up to.

Large Pieces Large Cracks
The big pieces (2x2) both had pith with big checks in them. Very disappointing. The small pieces were all in good condition.

Starter carving
After watching a PBS episode of Craft in America 10 year old grandson was super interested in carving. He's been trying to use branches from local oak and alder trees we have and did make a few things but the basswood is much easier to work with. He's having a lot of fun with this and book we bought in the same style as the show we watched. The pieces are a on the small side but ok for dipping your toes in. We'll be searching for a good sources of pieces that are a bit larger.

Okay, but get something cheaper.
It all comes from basically the same place, I'd recommend getting the cheapest option available. This pack only has 2 large pieces which means if you don't have much opportunity to make mistakes and try to correct it on the next carve. It's easy to cut, my batch didn't ship with any knots in it. I'd say it's overpriced when I could get something from china for half the price and the same quality. This review box wants me to remark on if it's "Fun for kids", but I can't recommend letting somebody young carve wood unsupervised. I would however, suggest this as something to do to connect with your children. In that case, then yes it could be fun for kids.

Unexpectedly High Quality
Good quality wood at an affordable price and a good variety of sized. I was new to wood carving when I bought this wood and didn't know what I would be getting into. After carving for a little while and carving a variety of different woods, I can say with conviction, there really isn't much difference between this wood and a more premium product. This will get the job done. Basswood isn't always available online, so its promising that Amazon and Beaver Craft wood is easily available and of good quality. I would certainly buy again.
