life of battery in hours?

The original battery lasted 4+ years. Just purchased this battery last week. So far so good

is battery rechargeable? after 3-yrs, my current battery is dead; I doubt a USB connection is adequate for a 7.4v battery.

This is already a rechargeable battery, namely a NiMH. It is required for the printer as the USB connection is insufficient to run their print machine as it requires more current than USB can provide. What they have done instead is charge up a battery slowly while the printer is not being used (which is most of time). Then they can use the battery for labels. It will do a lot and the system is pretty good. Unfortunately, NiMH batteries have a limited lifetime when continually charged with a trickle charger. Thus this battery wears out about every 3 years. It used to be that you had to buy a new printer, but now this replacement battery is available. You can try to "resurrect" the battery (do a search for that), but the lifetime will be shortened and eventually it will need to be replaced. It's unfortunate they didn't use a Li-ion battery as it would not have this problem, but is more expensive to manufacture. Plus, I don't see any sort of replacement for this unit from Dymo. I find it very handy but I think Dymo wants to charge more for more capable printers since they make more money when they do.

What is expected lifetime of lithion battery in hours?

Depends completely on how they are charged and used. There are many technical references to this on the web.
