Great Radio at a Great Price.
After researching several transceivers I decided this was the best for my needs... then clicked on the wrong one! Accidentally ordered the dual band version which is the same brand & model number; however this model has a "plus" after the model number. As soon as I saw the box I assumed someone else goofed. LOL. Then looked at my order & performed an appropriate face / palm. Easy return (pending) & I immediately ordered the correct "quad band model". It arrived Sunday morning! Wasn't expecting it until late Monday! Excited like a little kid Christmas morning I opened the box. The manual was right on top so I didn't need to dig for it. Surprisingly for a Chinese radio manual it was easily understandable. The radio menu is odd but if you read the manual first it's easy to adapt to. After becoming familiar with the features & controls I reopened the box. The radio looks nice! Apparently a copy of the Yaesu FT-8900R with nearly identical specs & features. Easy hookup on my radio bench, powered up then listened to each of the four bands. Audio was clear. I ordered the programming cable & software from another vendor & it hasn't arrived yet but was easily able to program in a few repeaters manually. Power levels were spot on with the specs as were the frequencies. Audio reports were excellent. I was a bit skeptical at first as I've never used 10 meter FM before but I like it! Several repeaters available as well. Much clearer than 10m AM! Sounds like 6 meter FM. Very nice radio that is going to get plenty of use. My intent is to mount it in my Jeep which will be going to all sorts of remote wilderness areas. Manual programming isn't difficult at all so if I need to add something out in the middle of nowhere, I can. To my surprise I like it so much I plan to buy another for the house. The only "bad" thing was the "beep" feature when programming manually. That got annoying really quick but it was easy to disable until I was done. That won't be as issue when programming via computer. The display is bright & clear with good layout. The controls are well placed & all have a good feel to them. I purchased the extended warranty but doubt I'll need it. I doubt I'll need the fire extinguisher or first aid kit I keep in my Jeep either but like the extended warranty, better to have it & not need it than the other obvious option. Bottom line... great radio at a fair price. A new Tech or veteran Extra Class ham wouldn't just be happy with it, they would be impressed. I highly recommend this radio.

After a few months I love this radio.
I have never used the radio by Yaesu that this radio is supposed to be a clone of but I can tell you that the TYT is incredible. I use it for my base station and I have received excellent audio reports from 90 miles away (I'm using a Tram 1481 for antenna) and regularly check in on nets 20+ miles away. Programming was initially a bit of a challenge but I think that this could have been caused by a problem with Chirp. It appears to have been worked out, though, because I used Chirp again the other day to make changes and it worked just fine. This is important because the proprietary software that comes with it doesn't import repeater info from Repeaterbook or any other source so programming 100+ frequencies and offsets can be time consuming. Also, I live on 7.5 acres and absolutely love the crossband repeater function... very handy when you're not near the radio. I hope at some point that they come up with a way to save the hyper-memory settings into programming. It's kindof a pain to lose that information every time you make programming changes. I would also like to seem them set up memory banks like on my Yaesu HT. I like being able to narrow down my scanning to either just aircraft bands or sometimes certain repeaters. Right now the TYT only allows you to set "preferred" frequencies/channels so that you really only have one bank to switch to instead of 10 or more. Also, with a Technician license, the 10 meter portion of this radio is almost useless since it only transmits in FM. I am overall very happy with this radio and have recommended it several times to friends who have purchased it and said the same thing.

No Support , useless warranty , Manufacturer will never respond.
I received the item just fine. I set it up with the matching quad band antenna and the unit worked fine for a couple weeks. It then started having issues. it would lock up to the point you had to shut the power supply off as the radio would not do anything. Then it went deaf, the Antenna was tested and it was functioning perfect, but the radio itself would not receive any signal. I did factory reset on the unit and it still was deaf. transmitted fine but could not hear anything.I was past the return window at this point so I tried to contact the manufacturer. the number they give does nothing, that being the 400 number they have on the box and manual. so I tried the web page, 8 emails sent directly from the web page and no one had responded. you can not get any support for this unit or the company that made it. 2 months now I've wasted sending emails out and not 1 reply. I would not reccomend this radio to anyone or the company that made it. I've wasted a bunch of money on this. TYT is a horrible manufacturer. Soon this will be completely out of warranty and they are doing nothing.

Better and cheaper than Yaesu FT-8900 but ...
I was first hesitant investing this much on a Chinese mobile radio for my car. This is an exact clone of the FT-8900, which is about $180 more more expensive AND less capabilities. To my surprise, I am very happy with this purchase. Chinese radios has been criticized by many ham operators but little do they know that all "Japanese made" radios are actually made also in China, or parts of it at least. This is no exception. I see a well built and very good quality ham radio. It does exactly what the FT-8900 but with unlocked transmit in all bands! It can also transmit in AM in 10 and CB bands. All this the FT-8900 can not do. This is a good addition to your shack if you are really objective in evaluating quality, performance, and capabilities. I own a Yaesu FT-8800 and other Yaesus but I have to admit that this is better that the FT-8900 in so many aspects. The only thing I did not like about it out of the box is it is set not to transmit if the frequency is busy or has a carrier (Busy Lock). This will be frustrating and can turn off any ham operator. To add to that frustration, there is no option in the radio's menu that can turn that off. Imagine checking into a net but you cant because you're waiting for the repeater to drop, which rarely happens.Bottom line, you won't be able to use it out of the box if you are going to work repeaters. This is the only thing that kills this radio and why TYT designed it as a default is beyond me. Make sure you purchase the programming cable and have the TYT program ready to disable that function. Shipping was fast and seller stands by their product. Download this (TYT-9800 2.06 Eng) to program the radio: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-wmkorOvfaZOWRUOFVESUw1Zjg/view?usp=sharing Download this to fix the no transmit due to Busy Lock (instructions included): https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-wmkorOvfaZTkFrNjd0NHhJcE0/view?usp=sharing Ps. Your antivirus might prompt you a warning because the program was developed by "unknown" publisher. Its fine and I have verified it with my Norton 360. Bottom line: You are saving aprox. $180 (even with Yaesu's $50 rebate) with same FT-8900 capabilities + a lot more BUT you have to flash/update or use your computer to fix the "Busy Lock" bug.

Doesn't Get Much Better Than This For A Mobile Rig
A few years ago 2 friends of mine each bought a Yaesu FT 8900. I had the opportunity to observe and also use the radio. I thought it was nice, but certainly priced too high to be worth the investment for me. Up until recently I had only ever used and needed a single band 2 meter or dual band VHF/UHF rig in the vehicle and that met my needs. 4 bands? Who really uses or needs 4 bands? I Thought to myself. In recent years I've been both more active on the ham radio and doing more on the road. Often times there were UHF repeaters that would lend themselves better to a particular situation but I only had 2 meters available. Or sometimes If I had dual band it was just a 5 watt HT hooked to a mobile antenna. It performed well but I needed more power and less clutter than having speakers, microphones, power cables and coax strung all over the car. It had been since I got my ticket in 2001 I last purchased a brand new mobile radio. Yes, I was definitely due for new mobile rig. I figured it may as well be the best mobile I can afford. But $400+ for a Yaesu quad bander? Still no way I could justify it. With lots of chatter amongst the locals about the new budget priced Chinese rigs I began to pay attention. A year before the TYT-TH9800 was even produced I found out it was in the design stages. I made a point to follow the progress and buy one if it turned out to be worthwhile. So was it worthwhile? Well, turns out my job is now sending me on road trips as much as 300 miles or more a day. Remote wilderness areas of upstate PA. No cell service dead zones. The HT had to go and I replaced it with the TH9800. Now I wonder how I ever got by on anything less. Paired with a tri-band Radio Shack "scanner" antenna this rig has been pure mobile operating bliss. Its powerful, reliable, and easy to operate. The hyper memories (A-F keys) are especially useful. As I travel to different regions of the state I can set and later recall a preset configuration for the radio to match the repeaters I use in that region. No need to scroll through hundreds of memories. I find myself using the dual receive all the time. As I'm beginning to fade on one repeater I can scan or look for another on the other side of the rig with a smooth as silk transition. I especially like that this radio, unlike the Yaesu version allows reception of CB. So I can have CB channel 19 on the left and 2 meters on the right. I squelch ch19 for only the important stuff and carry on my repeater rag chew as I put the interstate miles behind me. Audio reports have been fabulous, with quite a few saying "Where can I get one" in response to hearing the offerings of this radio. All 800 memories of this radio are full, thanks to ordering the USB Programming cable. Yes, it CAN be done in CHIRP, contrary to most of what you read on the web. CHIRP cannot upload and download to the radio yet but that's no big deal. You simply use the TYT software to capture a .dat file and open that in CHIRP. Then you can use all the neat options in CHIRP to download your frequencies and import them into the .dat file. Use the TYT to upload the .dat. Done! I have every 10/6/2/70 repeater in the state loaded into the radio with plenty of extra room. Outside of having a mobile all band/all mode I dont think it gets any better than this radio. Especially for this price!! *My version is the "Plus Upgraded" version. This version, according to the TYT representative that wrote me back,(great customer service) fixes several bugs in the firmware and makes the crossband repeat feature work better.

It is amazing. Good clear strong audio, Excellent audio reports.
I just purchased this radio. I connected it to a Comet GP-98 VHF/UHF TriBand antenna, and a portable 12 volt motorcycle battery just to try it out. This rig is amazing. Good clear strong audio. I'm receiving contacts on UHF simplex over 30 miles from my home, and these contacts were receiving me just as well, it took me about an hour to figure out the menu settings. Also where and how to set the step for UHF, then I was able to set my local area repeaters. I have been getting excellent audio feedback reports on the lowest power setting at just 5 watts. This is a good solid radio. To help with programming, I have ordered the TYT programming cable so that I can program the radio with my laptop. One additional plus is that CHIRP free programming software can be downloaded to program the radio. So far I'm very pleased. I checked with my local HRO, and my tech representative explained that the antenna recommended for this Quad band radio does not perform well with 2 meters and 440 bands, and will perform better if you use a diplexer with 2 different antennas one for VHF/UHF dualband, and a seperate antenna for 10 and 6 meters. I'm planning to set the TYT unit up this way in my vehicle. High marks on this awesome radio. It is my understanding that this TYT 9800 is Chinese copy/knockoff of the Japanese Yaesu Ft-8900R Quad Band Amateur Ham Radio Transceiver 2M / 6M/ 10M / 70cm, and lists for $700.00. One thing to know is this TYT unit performs just as well as it's Japanese Cousin, and the TYT is only $248.00. For the price you cannot beat this radio. For those that are frugal, or for those that cannot afford the Japanese Cousin, this TYT is definitely a great option. For those of you who are Yaesu Japanese "DIEHARDS" go ahead - spend the extra $310.90 buy the Yaesu 8900, and be just as happy as the TYT 9800 customers. Best Radio
I have been using the radio for a short time and without any issues. I love the quad bands and being able to connect on many different bands. The radio was easy to program using CHIRP Next and the manufactures software. The remote head allowed me to mount the radio body in the back of my vehicle and the included wire was more than enough to remote mount the head unit. The range of this radio is great and I can connect to repeaters in neighboring counties. Great radio with no issues on my end.

VENDOR IS NOT RESPONSIBLE !!!!!
I am a licensed ham radio operator with over 30 years of experience, and I purchased the TYT TH-9800 to evaluate its performance. From the very beginning, I encountered issues when saving repeaters into memory. I initially assumed the unit was defective and requested a replacement through Amazon, but the new radio exhibited the exact same problem. I have sent three emails to TYT’s technical support requesting assistance, but never received a response. In conclusion, their customer support is nonexistent, the radio operates unreliably, and it produces strange noises during use. At this price point, it represents a significant purchasing risk. Furthermore, the six-month warranty is practically meaningless, as the company does not respond to support inquiries. I have decided to return the unit to Amazon. There are many better alternatives on the market that offer superior quality and real technical support. I do not recommend purchasing this model.

TYT TH-9800 Quadband

No transmite
Desgraciadamente pude instalar el radio una vez pasado el tiempo para regresarlo. Lo instalé en un Jeep y al intentar transmitir marca un error, el cual no aparece en el manual ni he encontrado información en línea acerca de qué se trata.
