AMAZING lamp, as long as you get a good one!
When I saw these purple fluid/pink wax Grandes came back in stock on Amazon for ~$75, I JUMPED on it. In fact, I have purchased four of them so far! My 5 star review is contingent upon you getting a good lamp from the get. Things you want to look for immediately: 1) Liquid is CLEAR, not cloudy, and 2) No pinholes/white specks/spots on the glass. You will need to turn the lamp on before you can tell if it has either of these problems. It's important that you wait at least 24hrs from the time you bring the lamp inside before turning it on and running it for the first time. This gives the lamp time to come to room temperature and for the liquid to settle. I also HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend using a dimmer -- make sure whatever kind you buy is the correct rating for the type of bulb used in this lamp (at least 100watts). I've been using the Lutron Credenza plug-in dimmer for my lamps and it works great. Using a dimmer allows you to control the flow of the lamp, as the Grandes tend to get too warm once they really get going. Also, controlling the flow with a dimmer allows you to play with the flow of the wax. Turn it down to get columns and slower moving larger shapes, turn it up to get faster, fewer, and smaller wax balls. It's so much fun! Now, like I said, my 5 star review is assuming you get a perfect lamp -- clear liquid with no glass imperfections -- like the first picture I've attached to this review. This is the first of my four lamps, and it's definitely the best one I received. Crystal clear liquid and beautiful, perfect glass. The flow is great, it columns into really cool shapes when it's first warming up. Once it's warmed up and flowing well, the wax is opaque and stretchy, so no matter what stage the lamp is at it's doing cool things and looking beautiful. My second picture is of the second of the four lamps I received -- the wax performs beautifully, no complaints there, but the lamp arrived with slightly cloudy liquid that hasn't cleared up despite a couple weeks of cycling (the recommended method for dealing with cloudy globes). Because the glass is perfect and the flow is so awesome, I decided to just keep it. Since I have a super clear one I don't mind keeping this as a backup. My third and fourth lamps -- well, the third one is super clear but has some scattered pinholes/glass imperfections (looks like white specks in the glass) so that's not ideal. Since I can turn the globe to hide them, I decided to just keep it. Now the fourth one I had to send back for an exchange because of HOW MANY glass imperfections there were. They were just absolutely littering the entire globe, as seen in picture 3. There was no turning the globe to hide them, they were spread throughout the entire globe. Not to mention that the liquid was also really cloudy, even more so than my second one. So if you get a "bad one" don't be afraid to exchange it. I think Lava Lite's quality control isn't the greatest since moving production overseas so you may have to give it a couple tries before you get a good Grande. If you do manage to get a clear Grande with a good quality globe, and put the lamp on a dimmer, you won't be disappointed -- because of the size of these lamps the wax has the ability to do some really cool things. The way the wax columns when it's heating up is SO COOL, and once it gets flowing and the wax gets all stretchy, it's mesmerizing to just sit there and watch it. Very meditative. If the other colors ever come back in stock I'll definitely be getting at least one of each!

The most ridiculous item that you need in your life
I’m obsessed with this lava lamp, it’s much larger than I was expecting. I originally saw this on urban outfitters for twice the price so I instantly purchased it when I found it on amazon. I did not experience any fogginess that others have wrote about. Mine is clear, the glass is nice and smooth and it works perfectly. Took about 6 hours to heat up the first time and now I’d say it’s taking about 5 hours. This lava lamp is ridiculous and I absolutely love it. I honestly don’t know how I was living without it before. It’s so soothing and beautiful I’m obsessed with it.

Two times
The media could not be loaded. I had to return my first one. It was making a crazy popping noise as it was warming up. I own several grandes and I knew that was a very bad, not suppose to happen noise. Never run a lamp making a popping noise. They do not do that. I turned it off and returned it immediately. The second one came in a box that was absolutely destroyed. I had no hope for it, but I opened it and the globe was in decent shape. The base is a little dented, but I'm not looking for perfect. The first base I returned was perfect though. I let it settle for 24 hours and it warmed up and flowed perfectly. It was slightly cloudy but even that settled and now is my favorite grande. It flows smoothly and quickly. I love the pink wax. And the price was really good on one of these large lamps. They are big. These are the best basardized American version of large lava lamps we are going to get for the foreseeable, but they are great. Don't get me wrong. They are not Mathmos though, so also don't get your hopes up. I included a picture of my grandes warming up. It takes a couple of hours to get them all going, but you can see that the one on the right, which is the one I bought from Amazon, is warming up faster than the others. I included a video of it starting to flow. Tbh, the pictures and the video do not do it justice. It is a beautiful lamp. If these cool relics have captured your heart and interest like they have mine, you should buy a grande if you can.

Save the box
Had mine for about 8 days and never got it to work right. Did what the directions said to clear it up and get it going but no luck. Wax was stuck all over the insides of my glass, never could see through it. Left it on for 10 hours 8 days in a row and nothing. I (like so many other people) had one when i was younger. I never remember ever having any problem with mine back then. I ordered the 27" Grande lamp thinking bigger is better but what you dont relies is the bigger ones (from what the directions say anyway) take longer to warm up like up to 6 hours. And you can only run it for 10 hours. So, along with mine being so cludy, never really working & the fact that you can only enjoy it half the time its on, I'm sending mine back. Also the grande uses 100 watt bulb which gets waaay to hot for me. It was heating up my whole room, good thing its winter, the summer would have been even worse in the room with the AC running.Looking back i thing mine was the 53 ounce one with a smaller bulb. Gonna try that with the clear fluid. Im thinking the die in the wax is probably whats making the fluid cloudy. Kind of like washing a new red shirt for the first time and having it bleed in your machine on your other clothes. Also think my old one was clear.FYI, save your box when (or if) you purchase one. Luckily i have an ebay store with card board stock, styrofoam & a cardboard staple gun. Had to make my own heavy duty box for return shipping. At least until the return date passes.
