HELLE Eggen - All-Round Knife w/Leather Sheath, 3.98" Blade

Helle knives, made in Norway are some of the finest knives made and reasonably priced. I collect knives got some of every name brand. Helle are unique knives from Norway with beautiful handles and comfortable to hold. STEEL is what makes the knife!!! If the knife is to be used or displayed, Helle makes knives that are well made, great steel and all models have a well thought out design. Got 20 in my collections. Any Helle is sharp out of the box. Buy one Helle brand knive and you will want more of em!!

I love this knife, simple and elegant design but beautiful. It is not a cookie cutter knife, there may be some quirks and minor imperfections that are distinct to handmade knives. But nothing that would affect functionality and will only add a little character and beauty. The steel is fantastic and mine came extremely sharp, I mean it shaves the fine hairs of the upper arm without putting the blade all the way to the skin, a factory tree topping edge. I really don't think anything is perfect and for me this knife is no exception. It has a choil incorporated in to it's wooden handle and I wish it would accommodate my larger fingers more comfortably. Obviously not an issue for people with small/medium sized hands. The belt loop on the sheath seems weak, will see how it holds up. But on the other hand, the grain of my handle is gorgeous, and the sheath is an absolute perfect fit. This knife and sheath are lightweight and discreet, perfect all day carry around on the property. I think one would be hard pressed to find handmade craftsmanship of this caliber at this price point. Absolutely no regrets, and I will certainly be purchasing more Helle models.

It has a laminated blade, and the sharp material is sandwiched between other layers of stainless. I've had it around for months and never had the opportunity to use it, but last weekend on a hunting trip I decided to carry this knife because it is lighter and has a shorter sheath than my regular knife so it didn't bang things when I'm up in the tree stand trying to be quiet. I cannot adequately express how sharp this thing is. Sharper than razor sharp, and it is also very light weight. I swear, you just touch this thing against something and it is cut. I didn't get an opportunity to skin a deer with it yet, but I did have to trim some branches and cut some para-cord and fishing line, and it performed so nicely that I felt compelled to look back through 9 months of Amazon purchases to find it and give it this raving review (and I'm not much of a raving review king of person). On the negative side, it is not a "survival" knife which is what I mostly carry when I'm in the back country - I mean, you can't chop wood with it or use it as a pry bar, or use it as a hammer to break out an airplane window, but if you need to cut something, this thing will do the trick as well as any knife I've ever held. It also doesn't have a full tang the way I like - where the shaft of the knife continues full size through the handle and is sandwiched between two pieces of handle material. Instead, it has a slender shaft of metal that goes up through the wood handle and is secured at the butt of the knife. It's not a hammer or an axe or a pry bar, but it is a very nice knife that is sharper than any I've ever held, and the way the laminated blade is made, I expect it will retain an edge better than most.

I will use this as my all around camping and fishing knife. I like the lighter weight of this knife . the grip is comfortable and fits my hand well as well as beautiful. The blade is highly polished and “hair shaving sharp” !! The sheath seems well constructed and the eggen seems to fit snugly. As far as sturdiness I’ll assume it cannot take the same abuse as a full through tang but I won’t expect it to and the lighter weight is nice for a change as I already own heavier full tangs if I need them .

If you're interested in some big black tactical knife look elsewhere. If you want an affordable, well made outdoors (camping/hunting)knife this is an excellent choice. It's made in Norway and has most of the Scandinavian style knife elements- razor sharp Scandinavian grind on the laminated blade, large wooden handle, no guard. It has been well reviewed in most knife circles, and has a good reputation as a bush knife. I love the large handle- it's big and comfortable making it easy to work with over long periods with no slipping. The blade is razor sharp out of the box and the scandi grind makes it easy to sharpen. It has a fitted leather sheath that is starts a bit tight but breaks in after time. Even after breaking it in, the knife is secure in the sheath. It's very unobtrusive in its sheath which can be a good thing depending where you are. I highly recommend it.

Great knife! Great quality knife & sheath!

Everything about this knife is quality. The handle was had a really beautiful burl to it. Everything is very sturdy and well built. It really feels like something that was made for a purpose and with great care and thought. The sheath is made with the same wonderful fit and finish as well. The knife fits well in the hand and is well balanced. I'm sure that it will gut out a deer without issue. It is money well spent. I'm sure that it will outlast me. Buy one and you will not be disappointed.

For the most part, anything you look at Helle will be stellar. Beautiful knives, gorgeously made and presented, extremely high quality, razor-sharp, functional, designed to be used and handed down for generations, truly built to last. This Eggen is no different. I have it. I love it. I've used it, though, as I've mentioned in other Helle reviews, I tend to baby them a bit just based on how beautiful they are (very much works of art). Still, if you want to push them to the limit, they will deliver time and time again without fail. Highly recommend this knife.

Das Messer kam mit sehr guter Grundschärfe an. Auch der Griff aus Maserbirke ist ein echter Handschmeichler. Zu Gebrauch, Robustheit etc. können noch keine Erfahrungen mitgeteilt werden, da das Messer noch nicht im Outdoor-Breich verwendet wurde. Ggf. später dazu mehr. Jedoch stimmen erst mal Preis und Verarbeitungsqualität bei diesem Messer. Habe nur den Holzgriff vorsorglich nochmals mit Oliven- und säurefreiem Waffenöl behandelt, um das Material weiter zu imprägnieren. 22.10.13: Nachdem ich dieses Messer nun eine Saison im Camping- Bereich nutzen konnte kann ich nun folgende Aussagen machen. Das Messer ist zwar ein gutes Outdoor- Messer, sollte jedoch nicht für gröbere Arbeiten wie Batoning und andere Hackarbeiten verwendet werden, da es hierfür nicht ausgelegt ist. Für so etwas gibt`s Äxte und Macheten. Alle anderen Arbeiten erledigt dieses Messer mit Bravour. Auf Grund des Anschliffes hält der dreilagige Messerstahl seine Schärfe äußerst lang und macht somit z.B. Schnitzarbeiten und auch die Rote Arbeit zum Kinderspiel, wobei dieses Messer m.E. nicht in Kinderhände gehört. Die Spitze des Messers ist sehr gut kontrollierbar und es macht Freude damit z.B. am Lagerfeuer im Freundeskreis diverse Utensilien z.B. Löffel aus Holz zu schnitzen. Einzig die Größe des Griffes machte mir mit meinen großen Händen ein wenig Probleme, da es den Anschein hat, dass die Skandinavier anscheinend allesamt etwas kleinere Hände als wir Durchschnittseuropäer haben. Nach ein bis zwei Tagen habe ich mich aber an den Griff gewöhnt und komme nun damit gut zurecht. Wer das aber nicht kann oder will, Hände weg von diesem Messer. Das ändert aber nichts an der ansonsten sehr guten Qualität dieses Messers. Das Reinigen der Klinge selbst ist unkompliziert, jedoch ist es beim Griff nicht so einfach, da selbst nach der Ölbehandlung des Griffmaterials vermieden werden sollte, dass sich dort längere Zeit Feuchtigkeit festsetzt. Um dies zu umgehen habe ich mir bei einem befreundeten Imker ein wenig Bienenwachs besorgt und den Griff, vor allem die Seiten mit Klinge und Spitzerlknauf, ordentlich damit behandelt. Erst das Wachs weich kneten, dann den Griff damit gut und satt einreiben, dann mit dem Fön das Wachs weiter verflüssigen und gut ins Holz einmassieren. Nach dem Abkühlen ordentlich mit einem nicht fusselnden Tuch den Griff auf Hochglanz polieren. Fertig! Seit dieser Behandlung perlt Wasser und Blut förmlich ab und auch in die nun versiegelten Ritzen und Risse kann keine Flüssigkeit mehr eindringen und den Stahl von innen ggf. angreifen. Außer dem Griff behandelte ich die Scheide des Messers ebenfalls mit Bienenwachs. Das Ergebniss: Auch hier der Abperleffekt und keine Wasserflecken mehr im Leder. Macht zwar ein wenig Mühe, aber danach hat man noch länger Freude an dem Nordischen Schmuckstück. Da es auch nach § 42a WaffG uneingeschränkt in D geführt werden darf macht es das Messer für viele zu einer guten Empfehlung. Gut, billig ist es nicht, aber dafür hat man doch schließlich sehr gute Norweger Handwerksqualität in den Händen. Außerdem ist es ein Handschmeichler vor dem Herrn und man arbeitet gern damit. Zum Schärfen der Klinge empfehle ich den Fiskars- Messerschleifer, da dieser innen ein Behältnis hat, in den man vor dem Schleifen ein wenig Öl oder Wasser gibt und das doppelte Schärfrad aus Ceramic in dieser Flüssigkeit gekühlt wird und gleichzeitig wird der Abrieb ausgespült. Wenige Züge durch den Schärfer und die Klinge hat wieder ordentlich Biss. Aber benutzt dieses Messer bitte wirklich nicht als Dosenöffner, dafür gibt`s entsprechende Mittel (z.B. Victorinox, Wenger, etc.).Es ist nur ein Messer und keine eierlegende Wollmilchsau.

Das Helle Eggen ist ein klarer Preisleistungssieger! Von der Optik her ist es wunderschön und sauber verarbeitet. Aber Geschmäcker sind ja verschieden... Wer Messer im Skandi-Look bervorzugt, kommt hier voll auf seine Kosten. Wie bei jedem Messerkauf muss man sich im klaren sein, welche Ansprüche man ans Material hat. Es ist sicher kein Messer für den groben Einsatz, wie zb das Spalten von Holz. Dazu fehlt es ihm allein schon an Gewicht. Aber im Ernstfall kommt es auch damit zurecht. Den Stahl empfinde ich als relativ schnitthaltig. Es würde rasierfähig geliefert und hat trotz verschiedener Anwendung immer noch nahezu die selbe Schärfe. Die Klinge hat die richtige Länge um im Notfall mit allem zurecht zukommen. Hackarbeiten sind mühsam aber möglich und beim Schnitzen ist man vollauf begeistert. Der Griff ist bei Nässe sicherlich nicht rutschfest (ist bei Holzgriffen halt so), desshalb Vorsicht Aber das sollte sowieso immer oberstes Gebot beim Umgang mit Messern sein! Ansonsten liegt es angenehm und sicher in der Hand. Was ich als sehr schön empfinde: Jeder Griff hat eine unterschiedliche Maserung. Ist halt Echtholz... Somit mal etwas anderes zu dem ganzen Einheitsbrei. Sicherlich gibt es robustere, schnitthaltigere, griffigere und und und Messer. Aber letzten Endes ist es treuer solider Begleiter der einen nicht im Stich lassen wird. Desshalb: Klare 5 Sterne für ein tolles Messer. PS: Es gibt immer Leute die einem zu Messer raten, die sicherlich ganz ganz toll sind, aber ein vielfaches kosten. Das Wichtigste ist, dass man mit einem Messer umgehen kann!!! So bekommt jemand ohne Ahnung, aber mit einem F1 oder dem Cold Steel Master Hunter ausgestattet, nicht mehr hin als einen Ast zu schälen. Und ein Anderer baut mit einem einfachen Taschenmesser ein Baumhaus.
