Does it run on batteries and is it rechargeable

It runs on 10 D batteries. If you want to have recharging capability, you will have to buy rechargeable D batteries. The best deal IMHO seems to be Tenergy which you can buy on Amazon. You will also need a charger. For some reason, I could not find anyone on Amazon who sells a pack of 10 D batteries. You might be forced to buy 12 D batteries and have 2 leftover. Also, the quality of their D batteries can vary wildly. Sometimes you get the full milli-amp rating, sometimes you don't. You might also have trouble finding a quality charger which lasts over a year.

How can i recharge the battery ? through usb port or mains only ?

Not sure what battery you are referring to. The stereo doesn’t have a built in battery. It requires 10 D size batteries. I do use rechargeable batteries but I have to recharge them in a separate recharger. If you referring to charging your phone through the USB I do not know about that. I would expect it to but not positive.
