This book is the starting point for a lot of things...
This book is a portal to hell, so far it has cost me around two hundred quid! So engagingly written, and laid out as per a standard maintenance manual, it's very easy to fall into the " it's payday, I'll buy this bit". If you buy this book, and have always fancied building your own guitar, this is the ski lift to the top of the slippery slope you Will end up on. Also very useful for looking at the set up on any guitars you may already own, and helps to make them sound sweet again. Absolutely awesome

A good companion for electric guitar assembly
If you're interested in assembling a Strat from bought components then this is an excellent companion. It covers the assembly, different types of electronics and various aspects of finishing. The book's strengths are the clear layout, big, full-colour pictures on good quality paper (too many other guitar books make do with grainy black and white pictures) and detailed instructions. However, what this isn't, is a book on building an electric guitar from scratch. It's about assembling a Strat - and it does a good job. A couple of minor gripes: firstly, the binding, while very good quality, makes it difficult to keep pages open for reference while your hands are holding other things (say, a soldering iron). I'm not familiar with Haynes' other manuals but surely this is a common issue with this kind of binding? And secondly, the book refers to "S-type" guitars throughout. I know Fender has rights to the name "Strat" but surely we can call a spade a spade and a Strat a Strat?
