Outstanding old Racing Game
I recently purchased a Logitech Driving Force GT wheel with pedals - my first ever in many many years of gaming - and then set about to finad some good racing games to use it with. I first got Dirt 3 - not bad, but it didn't have any Porsches. In my youth, I drove a 1959 1600 Super Cabriolet and then a 1964 356 SC Coupe for many years, and I wanted to drive those cars again in simulation. After looking at a lot of reviews, I chose this game, even though it was released in 2000, and am I glad I did! (To begin with it has many and nothing but Porsches) Of course the graphics, now 13 years old, are a little sketchy, especially of the surrounding terrain as your racing over the landscape of Europe, but guess what? When your in the heat of a race against 7 competitors, you only care that you can see where the road and the other cars are - "eye candy" is definitely low on your list of needs. The most outstanding feature of the game is the simulation of the physics of car handling - it is excellent! I chose to play the "Evolution" mode, wherein you start off in the 50's with an intial wad of cash to buy one of the early cars and race it against AI drivers in order to win prize money. This enables you to enhance your car or move on to more modern cars as you advance through the evolution of the Porsche brand over the years. Needless to say, as I moved through the 50's and 60's I purchased two cars that represented the ones I owned, and was thrilled to find they handled just as I remembered them - basically scary if you went into a corner too hot. When I advanced to the 914/4, a car my boss owned, I found it handled just as he said it did - very stable, if a little underpowered. When I reached the 944, I was astonished at how well it handled. I didn't know anything about this car until I then looked it up and discovered it had been hailed by Car & Driver as the best handling car in the USA at the time. Hopefully, this gives you a sense that the 4 point physics model they used is very realistic, unlike a number of other driving games. As a further bonus, you can improve your car's handling by adjusting tire pressure, spring and shocks settings, and if you've got the cash, add equipment that really soups it up including carbs, engines, swaybars, tires, etc. These matter, and I found myself going online to look up advice on tuning the cars. The AI competitors you race against are no slouches, particularly the top two who are pros and have the best well tuned cars. I have lost a lot of sweat (literally) trying to get at least an average of third place in the various tournaments in order to advance to the next time period - it ain't easy, and practice and tuning are absolutely necessary. Let me add here that the vibration and steering feedback through the Logitech wheel is excellent, and definitely heightens the sense of realism. I could swear I can feel the G forces as I fly into a corner and hang on for dear life, but it's really only the visuals, audio, and the wheel feedback. WOW! Finally, let me say that I bought this as a used game, but it came in near pristine condition, complete with its manual. Since I have a Windows 7 machine, I had to fool around a little to get it to work, but the XP emulation mode was the answer to that. All in all, I highly recommend this game to racing enthusiasta, but especailly to Porsche lovers.

An Otherwise 5-Star Game
I personally feel that the game deserves 5 stars and that it is a great successor to Need For Speed 3 and 4. HOWEVER, there is one design flaw that won't allow gamers to enjoy the game to its full extent. Most of the cars and tracks are locked and the only way to access them is to go through a very challenging Evolution mode. So, if you think you'll buy this game and take a 911 Turbo for a spin, you are in for a sad surprise.

Best NFS yet
It's a shame that this NFS is one of the better NFS games. That is a good thing though. Need for Speed has been know for very unrealistic physics except for Shift. This has absolutely wonderful physics. Turning, shifting, braking, drifting, e-brake, acceleration, terrain, jumps, collisions. You can actually "feel" your car. After a few turns, you can feel the weight, center of gravity, power and grip of each car. Each car is unique in their handling as you would expect. We're not talking Forza 3/GT5/Toca physics, but they are pretty dang good. Miles better than the other NFS titles. The scenery in the game is top notch. Numerous German, italian, Swiss and spanishesque tracks appear after you unlock them. Each location inspired by famous and gorgeous landmarks and features. These tracks seem so unique compared to all the other tracks in the other NFS games. The graphics are pretty good too. This game eases you into the world of Porsche racing. You start out in the fifties racing 356 models. At first, you'll find this very slow and boring. Give it about an hour of racing to become familiar with the physics and you'll be out of the 50's before you know it. You complete races to advance in time. As you advance in time, newer and faster cars become available for purchase. You'll buy, tune, paint and repair your cars as you need to or desire to as you earn money in races. If you buy this game, be sure to get the CD key that comes with the game otherwise you'll have to try using cd keys online. (try searching for "14077 nfs" to find cd key results) or ("14077 oemx nfs)

Era bygone
I adored this game a decade ago, but found it shockingly horrible today. You can't go home again, and I strongly suggest you don't if you have fond memories of this game as I did.
