No nonsense blade meant to be used and abused
I bought this Ka-Bar 8 months ago and intended to use it as a camp/utility knife. I don't typically review items so let me just get right to it. Buy it it now. If you are interested enough in this blade to sift through the reviews then just buy it, you will not be disappointed. If you are still reading this instead of entering your Ship To information then you are one of those people that need a little more info, so read on. First impression opening this Kukri is summed up most completely with "F-yeah." It looks awesome. This knife has the presence of a serious tool/weapon without sacrificing utility for that ninjas and zombies BS that will have you laughed out of camp. It has confidence inspiring heft but is not too heavy to wear on a belt all day. The blade is strait and sharp. The coating seems to be of high quality. The rubber of the handle is soft enough to provide excellent grip and still very firm and durable. You will not be able to wait to try it out. That says something about a tool. First impression using this thing was "........." Speechless. I've used plenty more traditionally shaped machetes as well as all manners of axes and hatchets. This is a tool in a different class. There is a reason this blade is shaped this way, it just works. If you like and have time i'm sure you can find mounds of information on why the KuKri style blade increases the force of impact, I don't need to go into it. What I will say is that saplings or branches up to 2" take very little effort, it slices right through them, not breaking them, slicing them like a carrot. I reach for this over the tree saw for anything under 6". It does this while maintaining a relatively short blade and compact feel. I feel much less fatigue than other chopping tools. It's relatively compact size lends to ease of use and control as apposed to wild "hail Mary" swings of heavier or longer tools. Precision is safety right? This one tool is about all you need in camp. Pair it will a good pocket knife and you are set. No need for a hatchet, it is awesome for kindling. No need for an ax as it can chop with the best of them. No need for a fire poker, no need for a spatula to flip steaks, no need for a bottle opener. The uses for this knife are only limited by your resourcefulness. It is durable beyond belief. I have used it to split large rounds of fire wood by embedding it in the round then repeatedly slamming another round down on top of the blade, no joke. It worked and came out none the worse for ware. The curve of the blade makes it a little tough to sharpen with a stone, but with some practice you will get it. If not clamp it in a table vise and use a file, or kitchen knife sharpener, whatever you want. It's not a picky blade when it comes to taking and edge on. So to the nay-sayers giving poor reviews; Yes, this is a $45 Kukri made in Taiwan, not the USA. This doesn't matter in the least to me. If this matters to you, take your snobby self back to the beginning of the 20th century when this was actually relevant, the grownups are trying to talk. Also, in 8 months of ownership not one branch has refused to cleave, round refused to split, brush refused to yield or tree refused to fall because this blade didn't say "USA" on the side. Seriously in the 100's of swings and hacks I'v taken with this blade I don't think country of manufacture came up once. This thing looks every bit as serious as it is. Its intimidating on the hip, and it damn well should be. If you are shy on the hiking trail or sensitive to offending day hiking granolas with the presents of such a formidable implement of man, then stick to your multi-tool in it's cute unassuming leather pouch. This thing hangs low in its sheath its large and black and has that unmistakable wicked curve of an ruthlessly efficient cutting tool. It is awesome. It will outlive it's sheath. I fashioned a sheath out of kydex that is working beautifully. If you aren't handy in that way then pony up the cash and by one off ebay. I've seen a guy selling them out there and they look quite amazing. In summary. If you want a no nonsense utilitarian tool that will look after you in the woods and never quit. Buy this, worth every penny. If you are too xenophobic to carry a tool not made in your own back yard, then I feel bad for you, because this thing is executed perfectly and the price is right. You are missing out.

Most Impressive and Awesome!
NOW THIS IS A KNIFE!!!! Made to hack and slash! Thrusting with the point is also most impressive. Never mind the RAMBO knife! If I had to take a knife with me for survival! This would be it. A must have for your survival, camping, or hunting equipment. The blade is thick... about 3/16" at the spine. It tapers off with the bent part of the Kukri to about 1/8". The sheath is okay, but would have been nicer if it was all leather, not cordura with leather backing. The Kukri fits snugly in the sheath, no problems found. Hangs okay on the belt. Remember it is a BIG KNIFE, so it is heavier than survival knives, and you may not be used to the weight on your hip. The first thing I did was wave it around, and cut air, to get the feel of this knife (machete). Its a good size, not as long as machetes ... so i still consider it a knife. Really nice feel when slicing air, balanced, I'm sure it will throw well too, if you really need to. If I had to throw blades, I would throw Shurikens (aka. Ninja Stars). My first cut was through a gallon milk container filled with water. Clean cut, right through. Water flew all over the deck, but the base of the milk container still stayed filled with the water. Very nice. My next test was to split coconuts. Sweet! One stroke and the coconut was split in half, a very clean cut. However, half the Coconut went flying and the coconut milk went splattering. LOL! So much for the movies where the coconut shells spin after it gets cut and wobbles to a standstill like a top. This Ka-bar Kukri is sharp, slices tomatoes better than the turbo Ginsu... not really, not as thin, but still does the job. I was going to roast a chicken this weekend, so just for fun... I held the chicken up and thrusted the Kukri into the chicken. The blade skewered the chicken and the tip went right through... about 2" of the blade was exposed with the rest of it through the chicken. After I pulled the Kukri out, I noticed that the chicken bones were cut (split) as the blade went through. Most impressive! I LOVE THIS Ka-bar KUKRI Knife!!! By the way, this Kukri is most excellent for chopping meat. LOL, I got yelled at for using this Kukri knife to cut and slice up the Roasted Chicken. Although I'm more used to (quicker and accurate chopping by) the Chinese Cleaver for chopping, I had fun using this Kukri to slice up the chicken. This Kukri is well made, very sturdy, takes a licking and keeps on hacking. Too bad it rained all weekend... so i couldn't clear out some weeds and brush in my back yard. But i'm sure it will do the job. No visible damage to the blade after all my initial testing. I did coat it a little dabble of olive oil using a paper towel onto the blade edge. Remember it is carbon steel, which means it can rust. The Kukri blade is coated with black teflon material, so it will deter rusting, but the blade edge is exposed, so i washed it, and dried it, after my testing and coated it very lightly. By the way, the edge that is factory provided is sufficient, it can shave the hair on your arm. I'm most impressed and am happy with this Ka-bar Kukri Knife (machete). Added the following paragraph after my initial review: After the March storm of 2010, I had downed trees in my yard. I couldn't find my SOG hatchet, so I used this kabar kukri and used it to chop off tree branches and limbs, to shorten them into 4' sections so that the Garbage Truck would take them. This kukri did the job most efficiently. I was able to chop one inch diameter branches with one stroke, Three inch diameter limbs took a few hacks. The blade is awesome, no damage to it. Lots of residual sap left on the blade, but with the Remington oil wipes (which I use to clean my guns), the blade cleaned nicely. No damage on the Kukri, no knicks, chips or bends. Blade is tough. This kabar kukri machette chops even better and more accurate than a hatchet.

Great, BUT- UpDaTeD
Received today, as expected. Upon inspection, found it to be a solid, no-nonsense, extremely sharp tool, which I probably would enjoy using for a long time. Unfortunately, I also found a small rust spot which extends to both sides of the blade. I called Amazon for a replacement, which I was assured would arrive in two days. I'll update. UPDATE 10/13/2013: Replacement arrived in two days, as promised by the great folks at Amazon. Way to go, Amazon! I've upgraded the item's star rating to a five from a four. The kukri is great overall - just be aware that it is high carbon steel, and the same qualities that make it easy to sharpen and to keep it's edge, happen to make it susceptible to rust. SO - between uses, keep it oiled, after use, wipe it down and oil it (out in the field I've used oil from my truck's dipstick - I now carry a can of 3 in 1 oil in the truck). After I get the kukri home, I put some kerosene on a ScotchBrite pad and scrub the kukri, removing all vegetative and zombie crud. Then, if needed, I'll give it a "touch up" with a fine file, oil it, and put it back in it's sheath. The knife (machete) has good balance in the hand, the metal is heavy and strong enough to handle it's intended task, and the Kraton handle is superb. About the sheath - the sheath could be better quality, there's no doubt. What I found was that the leather is very stiff, and dry. The two little closure straps with snaps have been formed with a sharp (deep) U-shape, and when you want to put the kukri into the sheath, you have to have one hand hold both straps while your other hand places the kukri in the sheath - a pain in the butt. So, I decided to nourish not only those straps but all of the leather, with a generous amount of "Bick 4 Leather Conditioner", and I worked the straps back and forth while massaqging them with the Bick'a, to make them more supple and easier to deal with. BTW - I also have a KA-BAR brand USMC knife, the one with the plain (unserrated) blade and the compressed leather, and I have no intention of actually using it, just because it's so darn purdy and I don't want to mess it up. I keep it just for display - a piece of American history. The KA-BAR folks know how to make great knives (and I have no problem whatsoever with the kurki made in the democratic republic of Taiwan - please don't confuse Chinese crap with Taiwanese-made merchandise, they're worlds apart).

An EDC essential....if you could get away with it.
I have been pining over this tool for some time and finally ordered mine about a month ago. I say Tool as opposed to Knife or Machete because it have many uses. So far I have used it camping to cut down small, wrist-sized trees for shelter, split wood (works great for batoning), hacking my way through the dense Rhododendron hell on the property, as well as cutting rope. All of which, she performed perfectly. The weight-forward design gives it the effect of a much more massive blade, without the weight. I also really like the little horn on the pommel. It helps immensely to retain your grip and gives you the confidence for giving her those big massive chops without worrying about it flying out of your hand. I also used it as an impromptu spade in the garden. It worked great for digging small holes for planting and cut right through some roots that made their way in. This did mar the finish and dulled the first 2-3 inches of the edge, but that was expected. I slapped a bit of gun oil on her and she cleaned up just fine, not to mention looking even cooler with the finish patina that is developing. I used a Puck style sharpening stone and she is back to sharp as hell. Speaking of sharpening. What I have done since is left the first couple inches at the tip relatively dull for digging. Put a hatchet-like angle edge on the belly for chopping and splitting wood and the like, and left the inner swoopy part of the blade closest to the handle with the sharpest, finest edge for more delicate tasks like cutting rope or carving stakes and the like. This works great for me and allows it to remain versatile. All in all, a great tool. It has ALMOST rendered my Gerber LMFII obsolete, but I just cant quite give up the ghost on that one due to sentimental reasons :) I like having both, plus a smaller pocket knife for fine work, but If I could only take one blade into the wilderness, it would be this one, with my edge modifications. The only reason this is not 5 stars is because I don't feel I have fully tested her durability yet, though she seems mighty sturdy. Also, I like the style of the sheath, with its hanging D-ring swivel, but the blade cut through the stitching the 5th or 6th time I slid her in. I guess that's bound to happen eventually, but still. For the price, if you are thinking about buying one, do it now. If it was not incredibly illegal, I would carry this every day. * Shameless plug * Though, if you want something truly tough as nails, cool as hell and pricy as virgin unicorn blood, get the Vakra from zombietools_dot_net

Complements from a Survivalist!!
I will keep this short simply because of all the other reviews written even though I usually write huge long reviews for blades! Goes to say that I don't need to repeat anything- exactly as expected as said from other reviewers! To start, I'm a teenager male survivalist. Ever since I got my first knife when I was 9 years old, I have been fascinated in studying knives and their Rc, Heat treatment, Handle materials, knife making( yep this is a fun but patient-requiring thing to do!- although I don't know how to forge a kukri yet) , and much more. However, my biggest teacher was the one of trial and error. I have learned which knives are good- full tangs, locks, etc. I used to get a knife and get upset after a few days simply because I didn't think it was ' good enough'. A lot of knives broke. A lot of money was wasted on junk knives that had hypocritical good looks about them at the flea market. But ALL THOSE HARD SHIPS WERE WORTH IT!! - even for just this one knife! What I am trying to say is that all that was worth it just for this knife. This is the best knife I have ever owned. Ok, yeah I have 100$ knives in my drawer too but those are large lock blades and bushcraft knives. Even though I am still in my high school years, I try to make money off ebay by selling things. With the money I got recently, I wanted to get 'the best "chopper" I could get'for the money. Hopefully a kukri. Then I found this one. I usually don't like kraton handled knives, simply because of the bad experience I had with Cold Steel. They make my favorite folding knives, but when I tried out one of their kraton handled knives, after a few months of use the rubber started to separate from the tang, making it a very loose handled knife. Turns out I am not the only one who had this problem- look it up online. However, I think this is a thing with Cold Steel because I have a Sog field pup and it has gone through tons of abuse; the kraton handle is just as firm as day one. Any way, back to the Ka-Bar kukri. I didn't notice it at first, but when I was using it I noticed that there were two notches in the front and back of the handle, where the blade meets the handle- assume the knife is edge down. There is a notch right between the handle, exposing the tang a little. This is on the front too. ( see pictures by product picture) Then it hit me- this is to allow flexibility of the blade when swinging. Cold Steel doesn't do this, so when their kukri's hit a branch or log, it stretches the rubber a little. Ka-Bar on the other hand has these life saving notches, which will protect the rubber handle from any threat of dislodging. BRILLIANT!!!! I would give the genius who thought this up a beer if I only knew who :) The sheath is great- what's all this hype about a bad sheath?? It is a good sheath. Besides, consider it a bonus. The knife beats its price range by a long shot; I would take this kukri over the CS kukri(even though it is like 190$) any day. Onto the performance. This knife does not come literally 'razor sharp' as some said. The term 'razor sharp' has come to mean that it is extremely sharp nowadays, but it isn't. It came VERY sharp, almost razor sharp. Any way I went out and chopped down a tree about 4" in width. Then I chopped it into sections, maybe 5 logs. WOW!! It bites really deep and is comfortable when chopping. Ontop of it all, it was almost just as sharp as when I got it through ALL that!! But here's the best part- It took just about a few swipes on a kitchen rod and strop and it was razor sharp (yes literally)!!! I am amazed how long it holds its edge, and its sharpen ability. I was also able to chop a coconut in 1 blow!! This is where the ridge on the back of the blade comes in handy- great for smashing. Amazing blade. The steel is 1085, which is about the equivalent of sk-5(what CS uses). Love it. The coating on the blade is fairly tough too. It had a few blotches when held up to the light (there when it came or me?) but that doesn't matter. GREAT KUKRI!!!! You won't be disappointed. I am a survivalist too- and believe me, if ever you need one blade to take with you, this is the one, even though I always take 3 ;) *UPDATE* Well, it had to happen...the coating started to look ugly from use. I decided to strip the coating out, and make a nice satin finish. Turned out pretty well! Not a perfect strip, but it looks way better than the ugly coating that I had messed up. What I did was start from 50 grit all the way up to 220 grit, which gives it a good look. You can still see some small scratches in the picture, and that is simply because I don't want to go any higher(the shinier the blade the more likely it is to get dirty faster..)but it still shines like a mirror and looks like a CS gurkha sk-5 model! See pics and video- I hope this may have helped!! Check out my other reviews too, Joe

My 1st Ka-Bar Anything.. EXCELLENT, SIMPLY EXCELLENT BLADE..
This is the best damn tree and brush trimming tool I've ever seen..!! It fits my hand as if I'd designed it for myself. Balance is blade heavy and perfect for heavy duty work. Works better than a hatchet. It keeps an edge better than any other machete-type blade I've owned.. Plus, this Ka-Bar blade could easily double as a combat weapon without modifications. Frankly I've been a Cold Steel guy for decades, Buck blades back when they had good steel decades ago. While I still like Cold Steel blades, I'll certainly take a look at Ka-Bar products after this. Forget the cheap machetes and get something that WORKS..!!!!! This Ka-Bar Machete Kukri Model 1249 really works..!! UPDATE: 17 July 2016.. After all these years, my initial comment above continues to reflect my thoughts on this Kukri, "This is the best damn tree and brush trimming tool I've ever seen..!!" During its time with me it has been used frequently, abused occasionally, and earned my respect in its ability to cary out many other duties. It has been used to cut down small trees, sever tree roots underground, as a spatula on a BBQ grill, rearrange logs in a blazing fire, and generally served as an all-around utility tool. Throughout it has acquired only a single small chip in the cutting edge and continues to hold an excellent edge with very little dressing.. I was not a fan of the sheath but it has proven its worth also. Throughout it has safely held the blade secure and continues to be serviceable after being doused with rain, submerged in fresh water, and, with the blade encased, run over by a truck on at least two occasions.. Were I to lose or destroy this Kukri, I would buy another one of the same make and model if available.. I definitely prefer this tool over those offered by other companies like Cold Steel or others that I've bought or tried. As I mentioned above, "It fits my hand as if I'd designed it for myself.".. This is one tough, no frills, superbly designed blade that continues to provide excellent service while not needing to be coddled in its use..

IMPRESSED AND HAPPY
Got this sooner then expected. Very happy with this Ka-bar. It has no problem taking down small trees and branches. Good grip and feel. Handles very well. The sheath is good, no complaints as it does the job. Holds edge extremely well. I would recommend this for camping and hiking, as well as having one in the car or truck. Got a bug out bag? This should be in there in my opinion. Add a smaller knife, multi tool and your basic survival items and your good to go. I look forward to using this more and finding out just what else I can do with it. Also, there were a few times when chopping wood into smaller pieces the blade did hit a rock. No chips or any visual indications that it even happened. **UPDATE**: So far, this Ka-Bar is not letting me down. Small trees, limbs and brush have no chance against this. Makes quick work of it all. Hardly needs to be sharpened, no chips. I added some bright orange para-chord as a lanyard. Still no complaints about the sheath. My younger brother goes hiking and camping more then I do, and he is very impressed on how this thing handles. The weight is not a issue, it adds to the overall effectiveness. I just might get a second one so I have one at home and one to take hiking/camping. A third one just to keep in the car might be a good idea. Still very happy with original purchase!! ***3rd UPDATE*** WOW! This knife/machete was worth the purchase. Still using it for clear bush, cutting wood/small trees, and even using it to take tree limbs and making spears (just whittling the end to a fine point). Still sharp. Just using this on occation over and over, I am used to its weight and able do more with it. I still think its one of the best all around machetes you could have. Got one in my hiking/camping bag with a UMC Ka-Bar knife. Also, when hiking or camping, having this close by does add a bit of security. Its not only a tool to be used, but can be used to defend yourself.

Best damn machete I ever owned.
I have always been a fan of Ka-Bar products. I already had a black military style knife made by Ka-Bar. I needed a good machete for doing work in the woods around my house, and all I had to work with was the Wal-Mart machete my mom had given to me. I decided to take matters into my own hands, since I was always going into the woods with that flimsy piece of crap. I wanted something sturdier and sharper, and when I saw this machete and read the reviews, I knew this was the one I wanted. I also liked it for the unusual aesthetics. I was not disappointed. Like the other reviewers said, you can easily chop down some small trees with this blade. It comes sharp to the touch out of the box. I live in a somewhat wooded area with plenty blackberry bushes and small trees. My house runs on a wood stove, so we often have to go out into the woods to collect firewood, and those bushes and trees are always a problem. Not for this machete. It cut through branches a couple of inches thick in just a couple of swings. the smaller ones took even less effort, especially when I used the weight of the head of the machete to do most of the work for me. It was similar to using a splitting maul to split firewood in that respect. The blade does not bend and wobble like cheap machetes. It is 1085 carbon steel. It's thick and strong, like any other Ka-Bar blade. The grip is also very good. It's the same rubber grip found on their knives, and it helps a lot. It even has a hole at the bottom if you want to attach some string or cord to keep it on your wrist. The sheath is good as well. It has two straps to keep the blade in, and it has a loop at the bottom if you want to tie the bottom to your leg while the main loop at the top is meant to rest on your belt. The blade also holds its edge very well. You won't have to sharpen it up after a few hours of use. I wasn't paying attention once, and I almost cut the top blade strap off the sheath when I went to put it away. It will be a good long while before the blade fails you. The final aspect of the product is something of a pain. The machete looks very cool and unusual, but its blade is only 11 inches long. While it can at times be somewhat annoying, the simple solution is to wear gloves if you're worried about getting your hands cut by blackberry bushes and such. That is the only thing one could knock this machete for, and that is EXTREMELY PICKY. After a minute or two of use you will forget about the shortness of the blade. If you're looking for the AK47 of machetes, this is the one to buy.

Fantastic Knife
I have cleared some thick bush with this knife and have had no issues. It's a great chopper with a nice weight to it. Easily cuts through saplings and branches. I used to have a Gerber machete and it barely lasted a week before the blade was bent and wavy. This knife will definitely last and it takes a beating. The only nick I have in the blade is when I hit a shovel with it by accident. It actually took a bigger chunk out of the shovel. LOL. No complaints here. On year 2 of owning this great knife. My wife just bought herself one too.

Hervorragend
