"Film noir" evokes memories of stylish, cynical, black-and-white movies from the 1940s and '50s-melodramas about private eyes, femmes fatales, criminal gangs, and lovers on the run. James Naremore's prize-winning book discusses these pictures, but also shows that the central term is more complex and paradoxical than we realize. It treats noir as a term in criticism, as an expression of artistic modernism, as a symptom of Hollywood censorship and politics, as a market strategy, as an evolving style, and as an idea that circulates through all the media. This new and expanded edition of More Than Night contains an additional chapter on film noir in the twenty-first century. Review: Five Stars - vg Review: A comprehensive work - This is a key text for anyone interested in reading around the subject of film noir. It arrived in good time and order.

Naremore's book is a an excellent text describing the context and major themes of film noir, a distinctly American and original art form with strong European roots. His writing is engaging, his scholarship peerless, and the insights are fantastic! Highly recommended. This is the book to start off with. Don't look back baby, don't ever look back.

Deep into noir...
Provides depth on sources for concept or noir and how it was shaped by writers, philosophers as well as filmmaker. Thoughtful and thought provoking, it's not for the faint of heart or those who do not want to go deep in to noir

Academic and Detailed
The text with chapters by various authors writing in different styles can be a bit difficult to navigate, but the information is always detailed, interesting, and informative, with insights I have not found in other writings about film noir. Recommended for the serious student of the genre (that is or isn't a genre).
