Put a little Moxie in your life!
Moxie is one of the oldest mass-produced soft drinks in the United States, dating back to 1876. Originally marketed as Moxie Nerve Food, it has evolved into a cult classic, especially in New England, where it is the official state soft drink of Maine. Unlike modern colas that lean heavily into syrupy sweetness, Moxie offers a profile that is famously described as distinctively different. Flavor Profile and Ingredients The primary differentiator for Moxie is gentian root extract. This botanical ingredient provides a deep, herbal bitterness that kicks in after the initial notes of cola and wintergreen. Initial Taste: Sweet and spicy, similar to a mix of root beer and a mild cola. The Aftertaste: This is where Moxie is most divisive. The gentian root leaves a medicinal, bitter finish that many compare to Amari or cocktail bitters. Key Ingredients: Carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup (or cane sugar in specialty bottles), caramel color, and the signature gentian root extractives. Historical Legacy Created by Dr. Augustin Thompson, Moxie was once the most popular soda in America, even outselling Coca-Cola in the early 1900s. Its name has since entered the English lexicon as a synonym for courage, spirit, or nerve. While it is now owned by the Coca-Cola Company, it maintains a niche, regional identity rather than a global presence. Performance and Value For the average consumer, Moxie is an acquired taste. It performs best when served ice cold, which helps temper the intensity of the bitter notes. Pros: It is far less cloying than standard sodas and has a complex, "adult" flavor profile. It also works exceptionally well as a cocktail mixer for spirits like rum or mezcal. Cons: The medicinal quality can be off-putting to those used to modern flavor profiles. It can also be difficult to find outside of the Northeast, though it is often stocked at Cracker Barrel locations nationwide. Final Verdict Moxie is a drink for those who appreciate botanical complexity and history in a bottle. If you enjoy root beer, black licorice, or herbal tonics, it is worth trying at least once to experience a piece of American beverage history.

A Great Vacation Discovery
This past fall, the family visited Maine. The little lobster shack recommended I try a local soda called Moxie. Itโs really trueโฆ You either love this stuff, or you run to the sink! Me? When I got home, I ordered a couple dozen cans. If you have no idea what this tastes like, itโs kind of a cross between root beer and Dr. Pepper with a slight spice that I canโt place. Anyway, I have a new favorite soda, but it gets a bit pricey when it has to be shipped down from Maine!

Good product, steep price
If you like the taste it's a great thirst quencher. Now the price for a soft drink is quite dear. Wish I could find it more locally.

Taste
This soda is the worst product Coke has ever put out. The taste is horrible, leaves a metallic aftertaste. I'm going to throw it away, what a waste of money. I should have known better than to purchase something like this on line. I would love to give this drink No Stars, that's how bad it was!
