It isn't really usable by hand as is without modification. The 1:8 ratio makes it very difficult to nearly unusable to crank by hand. If you put the crank handle on the 1:1 shaft it contacts the 1:8 shaft. Also I had to rig up the pully system shown in the picture to be able to guide the wire onto the takeup spool because the take up spool turns the wrong direction. It should rotate the opposite direction that it does based on the location of the counter and the orientation of the crank handle.

Economic make quality guitar pickups. Just had to even out the tip and glue a neodymium magnet
