Great XBox game for the CnC enthusiast
As a big fan of Red Alert 2 and the Yuri's Revenge expansion pack, I was eager to try out Red Alert 3 when it came out. I played it on a friend's PC in Fall 2008, but wasn't too impressed by the overt use of multiple commands. Also, a major factor in putting off the purchase of the PC version was the SecuROM issue as mentioned by other reviewers. However, after a friend loaned me his XBox 360, I decided to take the plunge and picked up the XBox 360 version of the game. Needless to say, I had a blast playing the game. Red Alert 3 uses the CommandStick interface, which basically allows you to access all the game functions from a rotary menu which pops up when you hold down the right toggle. It does take a little getting used to, but the tutorials presented by the Guardian Tank, Hammer Tank and the Tsunami Tank make it easy to learn the controls. Not to mention, you get a few points, and an achievement for completing the tutorial. Red Alert is known for its over-the-top acting and fancy units, and Red Alert 3 is no different. Use the tutorials to get a feel for all the units and factions and get an idea of how to play the campaigns. If you have played Red Alert 2/Yuri's Revenge, bear in mind that the technologies used by the different factions are quite different. Without going into too much detail, the Allies use a similar build technology as in Red Alert 2, the Soviets: something like what you'd find in an Age of Empires game, and the Empire "don't need no stinkin' build radius!". Each faction also has different methods of upgrading their technologies. The campaigns (which I'm in the middle of), are challenging, but so far I haven't found any situations which were impossible to beat. The units seem more balanced than those in Red Alert 2 (at least, I can no longer execute an effective tank rush with just Guardian Tanks). One new (and odd) feature is that if your commando unit is killed on the field, you can simply retrain her. With Red Alert 2, if you lost your commando, the mission was a failure. I don't know if this is the same case for the AI commando. Regardless, this doesn't take away any of the fun. I did try a skirmish mission but lost almost immediately to an easy AI. I'd probably chalk that up to my inexperience with the new units, but I did read an earlier review which blasted the AI. With that said, I can't say I know enough about the skirmish AI to complain about it. I'll update this review after I play (and win) some skirmishes. Overall, Red Alert 3 is a good (if campy) game for the CnC enthusiast.

RECOMMENDED TO BUY!
PROS: 1) Great story line. Real world war history applied. This time the Soviet traveled back in time -> killed Albert Einstein -> no Einstein = no nuclear weapon -> Japan never got nuked (back in World War II) -> Japan got stronger! -> Now the world has 3 dominant superpowers: Allied, Soviet, and Japan. 2)REAL cut scene sequences played by REAL HOLYWOOD actors. Beautiful and sexy female officers provide intels and real-time strategy advices. They kept me HOOKED throughout the entire Campaign mode. 3)Graphic (when set to Ultra High) are remarkable, especially the Water Quality. 4)Co-op mode enable the users to play with friends in the Campaign (like Resident Evil 5). If not, AI Commander will take over. CONS: 1) Texture and structure graphic are not much of a different from Red Alert 2. Although I have no issue with that. 2) Online infrastructure is too simple. It is built with tradition principle invite and join room. I prefer automatic search and join function like Call of Duty Modern Warfare series. That way, it is less hassle to look for and invite so many AFK co-op players in the room. All in all, a very good game created with a carefully written story line. Would recommend to buy! Hope this helps.

Good thing I bought this nearly 4 years after the DRM fiasco
Most of the reviews written for this game are pretty terrible, but solely because of the lousy DRM scheme EA applied to this game at launch. After installing and patching the game, I found that I can deactivate a computer at any time, which means I'm not limited to the 5 activations EA initially restricted this game to, so long as I remember to deactivate my computer before upgrading it or installing the game to a new computer. As for the actual game itself, I find it to be quite fun. The different build systems for each faction definitely make it different from most of the Command and Conquer games I've played thus far. The graphics are a bit more cartoonish than previous installments of Command and Conquer, and the whole Communist propaganda thing is actually pretty amusing. If there's one complaint I do have, it's the lack of unit variety. Sure, the amount of units is adequate, but when I'm sending my troops out to attack the enemy, I always feel like there's something I'm missing in my assault. I never got that feeling when playing Command and Conquer 3. Overall, this is a fun game and fans of the series should pick it up if you haven't already. With the whole DRM thing more or less solved, I think it's worth a buy.

A Interesting New Set Up For A Good Game.....
I sort of like the new look of the Red Alert 3. It's a bit more cartoon like but the game play was great. I haven't run into any problems with the DRM problems yet but that's because I haven't had to redo an installation yet. (I usually don't redo systems unless I up grade or install a new OS which is coming up soon.) The game played great on my system. (P4 2.8 gig, Nividia Geforce 6200 512 Mg video, 4 gig RAM) and I see no problem with running it on a system slightly below mine. So that should be no problem at all on an higher end system. As far as the story line goes, I really didn't expect the storyline to stay the same anyway. The only negative I can see is if one makes frequent changes to the system, then they could run into problems on the limited number of installations allowed. (BTW: I feel this really doesn't make sense to me to hit the person buying the game for what some other people are doing. Instead it seems required the original disk be in the drive sounds like a better way to protect the rights holder.) Overall, I like this game. Much better than "downloading" the games as in "Ultimate Command & Conquer" where you don't get a physical disk with the games on it.
