Merula Cup XL – The Menstrual Cup for Very Heavy Flow Days

I’ve tried menstrual cups a few times over the years but had always struggled with leaks, no matter what techniques I used. My period is v heavy, and I was getting so fed up with leaks - even when using ultra tampons and thick period pants - that I thought I’d give cups another go. Given my periods are pretty heavy this cup seemed like the right choice. The first month was pretty unsuccessful - it hurt to get in and I experienced lots of leaks. I was pretty disappointed. HOWEVER, I’d say you have to be patient, and persevere with this, and it’ll be worth it. The second month I found a method for insertion that worked for me - basically put it in with the punch fold method, and keep rotating it (sometimes 4-5 times) until you feel the resistance when you pull down on the little ladder handle. I’m now on my 4th month and it only leaks when it’s full, and is comfortable throughout my whole period, even when it’s getting lighter. My next step is to work out how to remove it without too much mess - and I’ve definitely seen an improvement this month. One thing this cup has taught me - I was right… my period is VERY heavy. I easily fill the 50ml cup 3-4 times per day for the first 2 days of my period, which is insane…! As a result I’ve started on iron tablets. My period is now pretty much pain free, eco-sustainable, and I'm coming closer to forgetting it’s happening for the first time since starting my periods (and I’m now 40…!!). Absolutely recommend for anyone who has been disappointed by cups before and has a heavy flow… but don’t expect it to work or go smoothly straightaway.

I used to go toilet to change my old cup in 1-2 hours which is quite uncomfortable if am outside my home so I started to search for a large capacity cup for my heavy days, then i find this MerulaXL cup in internet. I go through others reviews and there was actually not much reviews about the cup and some reviews says it causes pressure on bladder. I was really confused to buy it because i got problem with my previous cup , i don’t remember its brand name, cup was not opening, anyway i decided try my luck because i don’t have any other options to be comfortable in those days. Yesterday i started to use merula xl cup for 1 st time. cup is almost same diameter from top to bottom that’s make 50 ml capacity.It easily opened inside , i usually do punch down fold. Initially i felt little discomfort but i am totally fine from next use. No pain or discomfort , very comfortable and very happy. I am writing this review to help others to think about trying merula xl cup or other larger capacity cups if you really struggle with heavy flows. I know all cups not fit for all. I am 147 cm/ 60 kg , mother of 2. i used Shecup for past 5 years which is a good quality small cup but now am switching to merula xl due to my heavy periods related to medical problems Hope my review helps someone. Over the years I’ve used lots of brands of cup and they’ve done the job. I have given birth naturally and have an IUD fitted which I have found that some cups can cause discomfort just after insertion. I’m generally quite very heavy which at work can be quite difficult to navigate, I’m confident I’ll last a lot longer between bathroom trips. The entire experience is night and day for me. I’m actually buying spares and will be looking at their other products.

I really needed a larger cup after being tied to the house for the first 2-3 days of a period every month as I needed to change my cup every 1-2 hours. After reading reviews and noting that people struggled with fitting and pressure on their bladder with this cup I was willing to take the risk as it has the largest capacity and I have many years of experience with other cups so felt I wouldn’t have too much of an issue. It’s important to note I have a high tilted cervix. I initially followed the instructions and used the push down fold, it felt ok, perhaps a little uncomfortable and a little bit of pressure but figured as it’s a much firmer cup it would take some getting used to. I (stupidly) went out, whilst out I had a repeated need to go to the loo, every time I tried to pee I could only pee a little and couldn’t fully empty my bladder, the pressure on my bladder got really intense too, I had to remove the cup to try again later. When I tried again I used the C fold, raised my legs on a small step whilst sitting on the loo and leaning back slightly - this provided the perfect angle to insert this cup. This was an absolute game changer, totally comfortable, I can barely feel it. Very easy to remove due to the ladder tab, just make sure you break the seal with your finger as it doesn’t have the small holes at the top of the cup like a lot of cups. Incredibly on my heaviest day I managed to leave the house and not change my cup for 8 HOURS!! when emptying as the top is solid there is no spillage as the cup and rim is so firm. All in all I would recommend this cup, instructions should give you better alternatives to just the fold down method as that really didn’t work for me and I could have easily given up.

Spent a fun weekend trying desperately to remove one of these, as it had done a 3 point turn and parked itself way up past my cervix. On the advice of NHS direct I contacted my gp, and laid back staring at a beige ceiling for half an hour as various implements were used by various medical professionals to try and remove it, like a fun fair hook a duck stall. Finally the doctor gave up and ditched the hardware. She shoved a few fingers in and managed to find the handle. Now, with most cups that wouldn't be much help in itself, but with this cup, and its groundbreaking loop handle, she was able to hook a finger through it and pull. Wasn't a Comfortable extraction, but it was infinitely preferable to a trip to a and e, which was on the cards if it hadn't had the handle. Won't be using one again to be honest, as our brave doctors and nurses have been through enough with covid, and the certainly don't deserve another morning rummaging around my nethers.

I feel like I have my life back now instead of worrying about leaks and using multiple sanitary products. I’ve gone from emptying my old small cup every hour sometimes every half hour to every 4 hours. It was hard to get use to because I went from a small cup to this large one but after a few try’s it’s like normal and easy to insert.

I've used menstrual cups for years, but previously had been a Mooncup user. I found however, that due to extremely heavy bleeding, they were failing regularly. Id wake up having experienced leaks, and it was really eroding my confidence and damaging my sleep. I did a lot of research and saw recommendations for the merula xl fow a heavy flow. I will say I agree with the issues some others have raised; its more noticable than a lot of other cups, and sometimes does make me feel like I need to urinate when I have already emptied my bladder. That being said, its still the single most successful cup for me!

I have nothing against this cup it’s just not for me, it says it’s ok for a normal height cervix but I found when in it pinched against my cervix and was very uncomfortable and if I managed to move it away a bit it would then push against my bladder, feel it is better suited to those with a high cervix

I bought this product back in 2019 (the one size). Before that I had numerous other cups but they all did not work for me. First, my uterus was low, I had VERY HEAVY flow for at least up to the 3rd day and I would leak no matter what I tried whether it was high capacity cup or cups designed for low uterus. Well, when I got this one, I was already fed up and left it for a LONG time. During that time I found out some things about myself. I had very tight muscles down there so by the time my cup was full (within hours), I could tell. Not only would I leak again, but I had this swishing feeling... too weird to explain. I also mastered my folding technique and realized one thing too... if you don't fold properly you'll push air up inside you which will cause a great deal of discomfort and may even create conditions for bacteria to grow. So make sure that even if you insert it, you squeeze the air out and use your fingers to manipulate around the edges to get it sealed. How will you know when its sealed; give it a gentle pull and it won't go anywhere! When you want to release you DO NOT PULL IT OUT! Squeeze it and then remove it in that pinched position. Why am I telling you all this? Because going on this journey requires patience and exploration. All the things that people complained about bitterly on various platforms what EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED. I needed something with crazy suction (or else I would pour). I needed something that would hold its shape no matter what (because my muscles were strong). You might have a collection before you see what works for you, but don't stop trying. The tampons and the pads ARE NOT WORTH GOING BACK TO. I took me years to figure out that I made the right choice in buying this one. Now I'm extending my collection. Love you all - Michelle

This is one of the most life changing products I’ve ever purchased, and I’m not exaggerating. When I first put it in, I could just tell that it was going to work for me. Day one. The shape, lack of air holes, and material are unlike any other cup I’ve tried. It’s also my favorite color which is nice lol. Yes, the cup is large, XL obviously. So insertion felt different, mostly in how you have to hold it to make sure it goes in properly and doesn’t open prematurely. But once it was in, that was it. NO LEAKING. I have a very heavy debilitating period and on day 2, and I kid you not, I wore white pants without even thinking about it, that’s how confident I was in this cup. Day 2 is my Armageddon. Most days I don’t even leave the house. But this day 2, with only 1 day to get used to the cup, I was out enjoying life like I was never on my period. The instructions given weren’t the most thorough but I’ll go over what I do for a perfect placement every time. I fold it where one corner is inside and one corner is out. Not the hotdog fold. I make sure I’m gripping it good with my 3 fingers (first 2 and thumb) keeping it folded. Inserting back and down, I also twist a bit. Keep going until I can’t reach and also I hit a dead end. Then continue twisting and do a few more to get it to open up fully. I take my pointer finger and go around the cup, insuring it’s fully open the entire circumference. And here’s how I guarantee I’m in the right spot: I squeeze the bottom kinda like your honking one of those clown horns, and if I feel like, oop that's my cervix 😅, I’m in the right spot. And that’s it! Easy to remove, I just slowly pull on the end ladder. The instructions say to not pull until you manually break the seal but it’s not a problem for me. I’m about done with my period, first one with the merula xl, and I’m lowkey sad cause I had such an unbelievable, satisfying, and relaxing experience with it. Get this cup. I had a large divacup for years, leaked a ton and cramped more. Tried a flex disc, leaked a ton and was hard to insert. I will never use another period product other than merula XL. Ladies don’t tarry. This cup is just such a boss. She’s big, beautiful, sturdy, and reliable. Thank you thank you thank you merula company. I’m in your debt 🙏

Amazing cup and perfect for heavy periods!

Llevo mucho tiempo usando copas menstruales talla L porque al tener miomas, sangro muchisimo y el tampax se me queda cortísimo, puedo llegar a llenar una copa en una hora… desconocía de la existencia de esta copa talla XL y menudo descubrimiento! El echo de que cabe más capacidad te hace la vida un poco más fácil en esos días que no puedes llevar una vida normal al sangrar tanto. Es cierto que cuesta al principio pillarle el truco de como ponértela, pero merece la pena ir probando. Si tienes problemas de sangrado abundante mi opinión es que la pruebes.

This thing is a lifesaver! I have a insanely heavy flow. I have to wear this plus an overnight maxi pad and still fill up the cup and the pad in 2 hours, but I know that sounds like not a long time, but itis much better than any other cup i have used. I love it!!
