Penn General Purpose Level Wind Conventional Fishing Reel

I'm fishing for big cat's here in Arkansas and we do have some big ones. I thought I was getting a big reel but it turned out to be a reel the size of a ambassador TGC5000c reel I guess I should have looked better

My 50 year old Penn trolling reel finally bit the dust. It gave me good service, so I bought a new one. First thing out of the box, the star drag did not work. Then it did, then it didn't. I went on and loaded about 100 yards of 15 lb mono line. Then the reel quit working altogether. I looked to see if perhaps some line was caught on the side of the spool. Nope. All was good. It just quit working (spinning). I shipped it back for a refund. BTW, I have 3 other 50 year old Penn reels that are all working fine. They were all built in the USA. The new reel was not.

It is a Penn, so it should last for years. Be aware that it's small size will prevent you from mounting it on a 6'6" or larger casting rod; however, it will fit on any saltwater rod. I recommend this reel for anyone using a small rod with light line (20lb and lower) for anything else I would go with the 209. It is a larger, easier to use reel that looks exactly the same and also comes with rod mounting hardware, that the 9M does not.

I bought this Penn 9M to put on a new rod I bought to replace an older rod that was stolen. That rod had an older Penn No. 9 on it. I caught some nice salmon on that setup, some in fresh water but mostly in salt water. Even with very little maintenance, that reel held up very well. This reel is brand new, but still almost identical. Penn General Purpose Reels will always be my favorite reels for trolling for salmon. I have a couple of newer reels and several that are 20-30 years old. It can be tough to tell the difference between the older reels and the newer reels because the design really has not changes over the years. And it for a good reason. These reels are simply the best, most durable reel you can buy. If you want a reel that will last forever, buy Penn General Purpose.

I used to have one when I was younger and was very easy to learn to cast!! So my wife has never used one before and i bought this one for her to use we put 50lb Cajun line on it and a 6 foot rod medium heavy.. She is going to start to Practice with it soon!! Penn Reels are very reliable and easy to use I own 4 Penn 309's We fish for Shovel heads in the Ohio river!! Will be recommend to other friends!

Got it on rod, but haven’t been fishing yet

This is very cheaply made, which is OK for budget fishing, but the significant and most important issue is that the drag is not good at all and cannot be set to a lower value for 10-15 lb test, thus making it difficult to allow the fish to run with the bait without free spooling. When first hooking the fish, you sometimes want a very low drag, which this reel cannot do

I got the Penn #9 to replace my old Penn 109 , Ive been hunting high and low for it and I happen to come across it on amazon
