These are my favorite affordable paints
I've bought these water colors probably 5 times now since starting watercolors. Not just this set specially but I have bought this set twice (once for me and once for my mother in law). These are my favorite watercolors so far and they're great value for the money. The colors are beautiful and flow quite well. Its very compact and fit easily in a backpack or bag. The only issue I have with it is some times the pans fall out of it and the colors get all scrambled up. You could probably fix this by adding some double sided tape at the bottom where the pans lay. I just wish they already had something like that. Either way I've bought these paints multiple times and will buy them again and again.

Strong pigments that mix well. Portable and practical.
Strong pigments that mix well. Great student-grade watercolor paints. Portable and practical. Dimensions: - The set when closed is L x W x H of 5.5 x 4.5 x 0.875 in. (14.00 x 11.43 x 2.22 cm). - The set when extended is 10 in. (25.4cm) wide. - The size 5 Cotman brush is 4.5 in. (11.43cm) in length. - The paint pans are 0.5 x 0.75 x 0.375 in. (1.27 x 1.91 x 0.95 cm). Pros: - Strong, non-grainy pigments that mix well - Portable and compact with ~ 9 defined regions on the palette for mixing - Ability to replace the paint pans or re-use the pans to hold tube paints - Good value for the price Cons: - Lacking a darker color (e.g. Payne’s Grey or Black) for mixing - Bottom palette is difficult to slide out I recommend using double-sided tape or glue to stick the paint pans into the case slots. To prevent the paint blocks themselves from falling out of the pans, wet the underside of the block (and/or mix until the paint thickens on the underside of the block), place back into the pan, and let dry to secure.

awesome paints and great for travel, but double check the colors included
I wanted a compact travel watercolor set. There are a bunch out there, and even though I'm a total beginner, I wanted decent quality - a better "student" grade. I have some Arteza metallic watercolor (omg ah-mazing!) and Prima watercolor (sooo good), so I wanted to go with a name that I had heard of for my travel set. I watched a lot of product review vids on ytube, and thought this would be the set for me. And in so many ways it is! I love the size. I know it says it holds 14 half-pans, but I actually got 20 in it. Where the little brush goes, I fit 6 pans in there! This is when I found out that W&N half-pans are proprietary in size. They are just a wee bit smaller. Only the W&N half-pans will fit where the brush goes, but I was able to wedge Prima half-pans in where the others were removed. I like the tiny water dish. It's not quite as practical as I'd hoped, but I plan to place an old-school film canister in there (will be water-tight and perfect fit to sit in it!) and have a bit more water. I also really like that the bottom tray slides out for mixing space. The colors are very pigmented and don't rub off or feel chalky (I'm trying to learn what "good" watercolor should and shouldn't do!). So why the four stars? I bought this set because of the case itself, and because I specifically wanted payne's grey and ivory black - both were to be included. Neither were included. That's why I ended up fitting in 6 more pans - I had to buy ANOTHER set (I bought a random watercolor set by gencrafts) so that I could have grey and black. Grrrrrr. The description has already been updated from when I bought it, but too late for me. I do really like it, so I didn't want to return it.

I LOVE THESE PAINTS
I love painting in the go, especially out in nature, and this set has been great for me. I've had it for over a year now. I bought it after doing research into different watercolor brands for casual or amateur artists, and while other brands were cheaper, I thought that this set would be the best return for my money as the paints are quality. I've had no issues with the paints, and the small size of palette has been convenient for me. There are other sets within the Cotman line that have more color options, but I tend to stick to the same couple of colors and have not had any major issues with that so far. This is my main palette even when I paint indoors at home, as I very much so enjoy using it. I've had to buy replacements tubes for colors a couple times since I've ran out, but that's mainly because of how often I paint haha. The only complaint I really have with this palette is the included brush. It's not a bad brush, per say, but I definitely prefer to use my own set instead.

Read for an easy fix for paint pans that won't stay in place!
When I first got my set, the half pans would not push all the way in and kept popping out. Each slot has a small plastic bar that extends from the bottom to the edge. I scuffed these up with an emery board and now the half pans fit nice and tight. I can still remove them if I pry them up with something but they do not dump out even if I turn the set over. Since I have fixed this issue, I am loving this paint set. There is a good variety of shades and it includes the necessary two blues, two reds and two yellows that are required to mix both vibrant and muted secondary colors. It is definitely worth the money and it will provide endless hours of play. One other thing to note is that Winsor Newton half pans are slightly smaller than other brands so this limits choices going forward and the empty half pans I purchased do not fit. Just something to keep in mind.

Quality paints!
Perfect little kit with just enough paint colors options to blend or use individually. Coverage and pigment are nice quality.

A fantastic affordable set for anyone wanting to get into watercolours.
I decided to try watercolours at the start of the year and bought this set at a bargain price of around £14. I am a complete beginner so my review should be viewed in that light! First impressions are that this is a very complete set, with a range of colours to get you started in whatever style you want to try. There is a cool and warm shade of each primary, plus 2 good greens, a nice purple, and some good neutrals (burnt sienna and raw Umber). After swatching and playing around I found I wasn't completely happy with the colour choices, as there are 2 shades of cadmium red hue included. This is certainly just an element of taste! So I replaced one of them with a half pan of a different red, to give a little more choice. Equally, I haven't really used the white, and have popped a Paynes Grey in its place. I really like the layout of the palette, it has some good sized mixing spaces and sits nicely if you are out and about, thanks to the thumb hole. I also like the look of the palette when closed. It's a great size for slipping into my handbag or into my supplies drawer when at home. However the plastic dies stain with some pigments. This has not been a problem with the included paints, but with some pro paints that I have since acquired. The cotman brush that came with the set is good, albeit very short of course. I don't mind the handle length but I can imagine that some people might find it difficult to hold. It is a useful size 5 round and I have used it a lot. I would like to upgrade this as some point to a retractable brush, to avoid any damage when in the pallette. I have also used the brush holder to hold a pencil and rubber, and a slim water brush (the Pental ones don't fit) so it has other used too. I have got on very well with the Cotman paints. I particularly like Ultramarine (nice granulation), the greens, sienna and Umber. The colour choice is not too wide, so it does encourage you to explore colour mixing. Equally it gives you more choice than just starting with the primary colours. I would highly recommend this set to anyone who fancies dabbling in the medium, or anyone who finds professional grade paints too expensive for their budget. I am completely hooked and it is thanks to this lovely, affordable W&N set!

It’s perfect for its price - 14 half pan travel set
I read all the reviews before I made the purchase. I have used the windsor newton professional version of this set for years and I’m very happy with it. I bought this cotman set because cotman set is far less expensive in comparison to the professional set and I was curious about the differences. The cotman set I received from amazon japan in August 2023 is perfect. For the container itself, the pans sit in the slots nice and snug, easy to open and close, the bottom palette slides out snuggly, the top cover is easy to remove and reattach. If a pan wobbles, put a tiny dot of blue tac down the bottom would have it fixed easily. If a paint block falls off, remove the block from the pan, put a drop of clean water at the bottom of the pan, put the paint block back in, give it some time, allow it to dry, the gum in the paint will melt a little and stick the paint to the pan. The paints are the colours exactly as described, no missing ones, no duplicates. I saw reviews complaining about the lack of “red red” or “green green” etc, but the kind of red or green or most colours you desire can be easy made by mixing the existing colours. For example, you can mix colder red with warmer red to get a more neutral red. Cotman is student grade, and I understand that it wants to encourage people to mix colours. The brush is of decent quality which was a surprise to me since the brush I had from the professional set wasn’t very good. One thing to note is that winsor newton pans are slightly smaller than some other brands, so the half pans you have from other brand might not fit in the slots. I tried with my schmincke pans, didn’t fit. It doesn’t bother me since I prefer windsor newton paints anyways, and I can also use empty pans to hold paint from tubes. In conclusion, I would highly recommend this set for beginners and artists who want an inexpensive travel set.
