Love this tool!
I love how safe this chain saw is, while still being super effective. It handles thicker shrub branches with ease. I thought I would be nervous to use them but it couldn’t be simpler, and the safety mechanism is excellent. The only thing to keep in mind is that the chains need consistent oil (there is a small chamber to fill). If this isn’t maintained, they’re not going to last long.

Truly Amazing!
Although I'm not a big fan of Black & Decker Power Tools, this tool is amazing. The Alligator Lopper is the greatest new tool idea to come along in a long time. It's actually a mini-chainsaw, but much safer to use than the full size models. I bought this unit as I have arthritis in my arms, and the use of Loppers is a painful experience for me. Thanks to this tool, my regular loppers get very little use now. And when it comes to cutting up limbs that are too big for regular loppers to handle, this tool cuts through them like butter. It's so much faster and easier than using a hand saw, you will finish your work in just a fraction of the time it used to take; and you won't feel exhausted afterwords either. There are a few cons: * If you have arthritis, this tool won't eliminate all your pains as it is a little heavy (weighing about 6.5 pounds). And holding it at shoulder height for a period of time could get tiring too. * Like a chain saw, the chain needs to be kept oiled (after every ten minutes of cutting). Black & Decker makes that relatively easy to do, but it's still a pain. * 4 inch diameter limbs are the maximum cutting capacity (which is far larger than that of any regulars loppers you're going to use); still, there are times when it's not quite enough. But I suppose if the capacity was larger, the tool would be heavier and a little more difficult to use on the smaller limbs. So on second thought, this is probably not a negative after all. Final comments: I realize that every design is a compromise between many factors, such as power, capacity, weight, durability, efficiency, performance, safety, and ease of handling. So there are bound to be some cons. No one tool can do everything and be the perfect tool for every job that needs done. For that reason, I don't consider the cons I've listed to be serious enough to affect the five star rating I gave this tool.

Great saw does the job for yard trimming and more
Lately, my wife and I have had a lot of yard trimming to do on weekends, and were struggling with mechanical loppers and a small traditional chain saw, fighting to easily and cleanly trim medium sized shrubs and smaller trees and tree limbs, when I saw this Black & Decker LP1000 Alligator Lopper 4.5 Amp Electric Chain Saw listed on Amazon. I read the prior good reviews, and even watched the Black and Decker video ad on the Internet and went ahead and ordered one. The Alligator Lopper arrived as predicted on Saturday, and we spent the rest of weekend trying it out and were very, VERY pleased with the results. My wife mentioned that she loves how easy the Alligator Lopper was to use, even though she didn't feel as comfortable using our prior traditional 14 inch electric chain saw. The idea here is the control the lower "jaw" gives while cutting smaller branches and limbs, grabbing and holding the limb while the inner chain cleanly cuts the wood. The action is very intuitive, as the Lopper has two handles with switches on each side that you grasp naturally much like a traditional lopper, but without requiring any effort to use. It is also easy to gather up smaller "stalks" on plants and cleanly cut them all at once. Finally, it is possible to cut larger limbs up to 4 inches in diameter much more easily than with a traditional chain saw, again due to the control given by the lower "jaw" grasping the object you are cutting. This control is especially noticeable when cutting limbs that are lying on the ground, as the "jaw" acts as a guard to keep the inner saw away from the ground, and it is simple to cut up longer limbs into easily manageable pieces in short order. We will certainly keep using our traditional chain saw for larger limbs and trees, but the Alligator Lopper is now the perfect tool for cutting up anything smaller. A replacement chain Black & Decker 6-Inch Replacement Saw Chain RC600 (For LP1000 and NLP1800 Alligator Loppers) is available, and the Lopper features an easy to adjust chain tensioner, and even includes the necessary wrench to make the simple adjustments. After all the above "Pros", the only "Con" to mention, as I have also read on several other reviews, was what appeared at first to be a smallish bar and chain oil reservoir on the Lopper. It does come with a small bottle to apply bar and chain oil (not included) into the covered port, which needs to be oiled every now and then (the instructions say every 10 minutes of actual use,) but what I found to work quite nicely was that an inexpensive Oil Can, like ( Metal Oil Can 6.3oz ) does do the job without any fuss. Problem solved, so I feel quite comfortable in giving the Alligator Lopper 5 stars out of 5. Nice product!

LP1000 Alligator Lopper
This is a great safety innovation for this type of power tool, which can be dangerous to operate. The chainsaw is one of the most misunderstood, and dangerous power tools to operate, if you are not properly trained, and lack the skills, and stamina to operate it safely. I purchased it primarily for it's unique safety design. The top of the chain, and the tip also is guarded by a stationary cover. The dangerous, and rightly so, "kick-back" is eliminated, because the tip is covered. The lower cover opens, like a "jaw", to expose the cutting chain. The lower "jaw" also helps the cutting chain to dig into the work. The LP1000 Alligator Lopper Electric Chain Saw powered right thru every cutting task I used it for. Once the branch is cut, the jaw is closed, thus the chain is completely covered, significantly reducing the danger to the operator. I have used a chain saw in my line of work, Land Surveying, for the State of Michigan, Natural Resources Department, for many years, now retired. I have also taken a chainsaw safety seminar on the proper use, and maintenance, of the chainsaw at a University. Among other things I learned that one must match the tool to the job requirements. This particular tool, the Black & Decker LP1000 Alligator Lopper Electric Chain Saw, makes for great cleanup after taking down a tree with a regular chainsaw. Although you can cut down smaller trees with it. It is also lightweight which helps reduce operator fatigue, which can be dangerous, while using this type of power tool. As it is electic, that makes the use of a gas-oil fuel mixture, unnecessary. The entire gas-oil fuel mixture scenario can be a real hassle. And if a gas-oil fuel mixture powered chainsaw is not properly maintained, you can wind up with a piece of junk, real fast. It is great for trimming branches on bushes which are too big for a hedge trimmer. Thank you too, Black & Decker for putting operator safety at the forefront and making the LP1000 Alligator Lopper Electric Chain Saw. This chainsaw is a safe, and wonderful tool to use. I highly recomend this chainsaw as a welcome member to anyone's tool collection.

Glad I Got It
Wanted to use this a couple times before leaving a review. Overall, I like it and am glad I bought it. I had a pile of branches back by the deck for, no lie, at least two years. To cut them down to size, I'd have to get out the reciprocating saw. It was a pain...won't get into the whole process I used but it involves stepping on one end of the branch. Since it was a pain, I just never did it. So when I saw the Alligator Lopper, I thought it would be a lot easier. And it was. It was still warm out when I tried it out the first time. Things went well, and I knocked the pile down a bunch. But I got too hot and stopped. This weekend, went at it again and got the rest of the pile done. Finally. Unfortunately, my girlfriend was also working in the yard and had me cut down more branches. So there's a pile again, but I know it won't be around for two years this time. People say it's light, but to me it was heavier than I thought it would be. It's not super heavy, but using it all afternoon and in different positions, my arms were getting tired. It's a little awkward to wield sometimes. But it does a great job. To cut through the branches in my pile, I tired cutting them as they lay on the pile. Worked mostly, but I also propped some up against a small tree and did a bunch that way. When my girlfriend pointed out which branches she wanted cut from the trees, I would try to cut them down in manageable chunks while the branch was still on the tree instead of cutting the branch at the base and have to end up cutting a long, loose branch into chunks later (hope I explained that OK). Worked for the most part and was easier cutting branches still on a tree as opposed to cutting up loose branches. My biggest complaint is the oil situation. They provide you with a small plastic bottle for chain saw oil. The opening for the oil on the lopper is a small hole, so you need the bottle with the nozzle on the end that fits into the hole. Well, the plastic bottle was simply not squeezable. There was no way I was going to be able to squeeze it. My girlfriend tried and she couldn't do it either. It just didn't work. You need to oil it since it's basically a chain saw and you'll ruin your chain if you don't keep it oiled. Luckily, I read another comment on here with the same complaint and they use syringes instead. Luckily, again, we happen to have some syringes leftover from when our cat was sick. This worked perfectly. The nozzle end of the syringe fit perfectly. It was a good thing we had the syringes as there was no way to get the thing oiled otherwise and therefore I wouldn't be able to use it until I figured out a way. My pros: It works. It's safer than a chain saw and easier to operate. It's electric so no mixing gas and oil, making sure you have gas, etc. My cons: The oil bottle thing. Clearly a manufacturing/quality control thing...how can you include a useless oil bottle? It's electric so you're limited to the length of your extension cord. It needs a wide separation to get to the branch you need to cut. What I mean is, the branches my girlfriend had me cut was of this tree/bush thing that had actually grown in and around an old fence. There was no way I could cut it close enough to free it since there wasn't an opening big enough for the lopper to fit. Same situation at its base with multiple branches coming out. Had to break out the reciprocating saw after all so I could cut around the base and around the fence. Frequent stops for oil/chain tightening. I mean frequent. It doesn't hold a lot of oil and you want it to be well oiled. The chain becomes loose easily so you want to stop often and tighten it so it doesn't slip off. It's super easy to tighten. Two nuts on the side. Loosen them both, chain tightens itself, tighten the nuts. Literally less than a minute. But I didn't go more than a couple cuts without at least checking the chain. The chain never came off completely. And making sure it was oiled. Four stars because it works and I'm glad I got it. Minus the one star because of the oil bottle.

This tool is great!
Jawsaw vs Alligator Lopper I saw the jawsaw on tv and thought what a great idea, when I watched a few times I realized that it weighed about 8.5 pounds had to use one hand to hold up while the other had to press with your thumb to activate the blades and push. I know that I could not use this for a long period of time I needed something that was lighter and could use both hands equally for long use. I went on Amazon and found this Alligator lopper and ordered it. I did check out prices on other sites and Amazon had the best price. It is only 6.5 pounds and is similar to the jawsaw but it's smaller and you use both hands which distributes the weight equally. I love this machine and can't praise it enough, I had to cut hedges that were 15 feet high which I had been putting off for years because the thought of using a hand lopper and cutting each branch one by one I just couldn't physically do it. The Alligator made this task so easy, it could take a few branches at a time with no kickback and cut them in seconds. It cuts up to four inches and then some, you don't have to push. I cut hedges, 12 foot high rhododendrons all the downed branches that fell off the trees with the freak snow storm we had in Oct. I also cut the forsythia bushes to the ground that were out of hand and it's still going strong. The only problem is the oil, it says to put oil in it every 10 minutes of use which is a pain, sometimes I let it go longer. I own a chain saw but cutting the branches with the Alligator was a lot easier, didn't have to pick up the downed branches just cut right on the ground the outer jaws kept the blade from hitting the ground. You must check the back of the saw for stuck branches etc. and take them out otherwise the blade will fall off, also make sure the blade is kept tightened as that will make the blade fall off also. I used the Electric Chain saw. Black & Decker LP1000 Alligator Lopper 4.5 amp Electric Chain Saw

Keep mouth closed while using! Great product! Read this review!!!
I learned that you should not open your mouth while sawing wood with the lopper. I had to spit out wood chips and saw dust and leaves a few times! I was pleasantly surprised that this is as easy to use as the reviews and videos say! I am 64 and not as agile or strong as I used to be. But this takes very little effort to use. Because it works like scissors, and because you must use 2 hands, the weight is distributed well and it is not at all awkward to manipulate. It's also not overly noisy. I was disappointed to find that oil does not come with it. However, upon reading a government article on chain saw oils, I found that canola oil is perfect and I had some in my kitchen cabinet! The squeeze bottle that comes with the lopper is too hard to squeeze, but I let the oil drip from it into the hole on the lopper and then pushed the squeeze bottle nozzle into the hole to help the oil go down wherever it goes. It is almost impossible to hurt yourself with the chain saw part of this contraption. You would have to intentionally stick a body part between the scissor-like guards to saw something off or cut yourself. That being said, I read the 12 page manual, and I think it is very important to read it. Follow the instructions! They give you sound advice. I read about many dangers of which I had been previously unaware. It is easy to end up having a problem using the lopper, so be proactive and prepare yourself with the proper knowledge so as to avoid the problems common to chain saw use. At one point, I held the lopper upside down to cut a limb and it got stuck. I pulled the lopper out from the partially cut limb and the chain came off. So I got to follow the instructions to re-seat the chain. It was very hard to get the 2 nuts started turning (turn counter clockwise to loosen) but I gave a good yank on the included wrench and they moved. It was actually fairly easy to replace the chain. I was pleased and surprised and rather proud of myself to accomplish it, and without mishap. After every cut you make, shake the jaws out while running the chain in order to let any wood chips or debris fall out. When all done cutting, unplug the lopper and close your eyes and blow out any remaining debris. If necessary, remove the 2 nuts and the plastic piece they hold in order to completely clear out debris. Lastly, if you get tired, STOP! This is not a tool to use when you are even a bit weary. You don't need to misjudge and bring down a limb on your head, trip over something, or saw the electric cord. Oh - last, last thing: My palms got very sore from holding the lopper handles and from the vibrations. Of course, I didn't notice this was happening until after I was all done. I may invest in a pair of those gloves that protect against vibration. Or, next time, maybe I just won't do so much at one time, LOL!

Like a Hot Knife Through Butter!
As a middle aged, out of shape woman, I was hesitant to get this to get rid of some saplings, but knew it would be cheaper to do it myself than pay the lawn guy. If I only use this three times, it will have paid for itself. Not hard to use, felt safe using it. It is mere seconds to go through a good sized sapling. Great tool. Highly recommended.
