Brings Lego Creations Alive
The grandparents gave this kit as an early birthday present for our son who is turning 7. He absolutely loves it! Since he received a Lego kit with a wind-up motor last Christmas (Toy Story 7590) he has been doing everything he can to animate his Lego creations, using the little wind-up motor to make everything from race cars to drills. Of course, once you get started in that direction, you want to do even greater things. So, he has been begging me to make an old Lego motor (from my childhood collection) work again. As you can imagine, when he opened this present he just about jumped to the ceiling with excitement! And this little motor has not disappointed. I have lost track of the hours he has spent during the last couple weeks putting it into motion. It also makes for great time together, because he constantly brings me in to give advice and help with details for connecting the gears correctly to harness the torque into the needed functions. I guess my only complaint would be the lack of directions. A simple diagram for how to connect the motor/switch/lights/battery pack would have been helpful. And the kit would have been a thousand times more accessible if it had come with a basic booklet giving examples of how it could be used in conjunction with the included gears/axels/joints. For a lone newbie into the world of simple mechanics and electronics, the kit's lack of instructions might be a serious limitation. But since my 7-year-old's Daddy is almost as excited as he is about Legos, the kit is exactly what was needed. :) The quality of the entire kit (motor, battery pack, connectors and accessories) is excellent--exactly as you would expect from Lego! We look forward to many years of play and learning!

A must have for the 8294 excavator
The Power Functions kit #8293 is a must have for the 8294 Excavator. The kit transforms the excavator into a real scale functioning excavator (I own real heavy equipment myself), which can actually dig dry sand, sifted loam, and we attached a small jewelry chain to it and it can lift things like Transfomers Bumblebee and some surprisingly heavy objects just like a real excavator does! So dont hesitate to get one of these. The motor is tiny, but is surprisingly powerful and also this kit has a nice quality switch that replicates a real hydraulic lever and also comes with accessory LED lights which snap right on easily and look sano. The Design of the battery box and the excavator is well done, it mounts underneath the tracked undercarriage and it lowers the center of gravity of the excavator, which increases its stability. Expensive, but worth the dough.

Bring your technic to life
Spent a pretty penny on this being that the kit is a legacy system. Wish that the lights and motor switch were separate, but kit works well.

Incredibly fun and inspires creative building and play
I LOVE this set. We bought it for our 8 year old after he went to a Lego engineering camp this summer and he wanted to keep working at home. He has been able to use it with the Legos he already had at home and build lots of cool moving things. I especially like that it comes with headlights. Is definitely recommend it to anyone.

Included Cables are way too short
I've played with Legos for 30 years. The problems with the 8293 kit are: 1. It takes 6 AA batteries. 2 of the 6 are difficult to get in/out under the curved covers. I imagine it will be very hard for my kid to change the batteries. Why not have an enclosed lithium battery charged via USB? It would be far more compact and last longer. 2. I owned the old Technics motor many years ago. That one came with a long (~2 foot?) cord which was fine. This comes with a 5" cord connecting the battery pack to the motor, and another 5" cord which can be used as a secondary reverse switch. The entire arrangement is awful for making models. Most models I make are light and I don't want to attach the battery pack. Why not use a standard USB or an ethernet, or a headphone cable to connect components? That way I could extend it without buying more stuff. These wires are hard-wired to motor, so it would be a challenge to make your own wire. 3. Since this short wire forces me to attach the battery pack to the model, I was alamed the battery case provides 2 very awkward ends to do this, and nothing in the middle. The models will need to be designed around this clumsy battery pack. 4. The motor mount is similarly limited. I can use rivets to mount the front of the motor to a girder, which seems most promising. The bottom lugs however are not strong enough for much, and the motor popped off easily while running. There are no top lugs, so in essence there is one mounting option which then forces model to be designed around the motor. In summary the old, old motor kit was much better designed. Lego did a poor job of considering loading the batteries into the case, the length of the connection cables, and too few attachment options for both the battery case or the motor. P.S. I do now see that I could have bought the Rechargeable power kit 8878($75.04), the required 10vDC charger kit 8887 $21.97, and the 20" extension wire for $9.98 to achieve my goals. A total of $106.99 in addition to the $40 for the original 8293 kit). Still think Lego should have included the 20" extension to make 8293 kit much more functional out of the box. Raising from 1 star to 2.

Great set, be sure to buy additional gears for more fun!
We have bought more than one of these kits! My son LOVES them and makes all kinds of lego creations from cranes to helicopters and more. Great set to take the legos to the next level and keep their imaginations soaring. Be sure to get a good set of lego gears to go with it, you'll be glad you did.

Je recommande ce produit qui va avec le pick up. Très bon moteur qui tient bien la charge. Les phares peuvent fonctionner en même temps que le treuil!
