Review: a single name: Artemisia - Beyond the excellent reproductions of Artemisia's paintings, I very much appreciated the essays in this book. They, especially the first one, not only advance our knowledge of the painter's life and work, they very properly acknowledge the relatively little we know and point quite clearly to the great deal of research that still needs to be done. Pointing out the shortcomings of current research in any field is indeed - and unfortunately - rare. Looking to the real possibility of further knowledge is encouraging and exciting in every respect. Review: Long awaited recognition of Artemisiaโs skill! - As it was not possible to visit this first exhibition of Artemisia Gentilleschi in the UK, due to the pandemic, it was a joy to receive this catalogue. Itโs full of stunning illustrations and articles about her life and work. Amazing value for such a gorgeous book!

Great Exhibition, Excellent Catalogue
This was the best exhibition I have been to for a long time, the paintings are awe-inspiring, and, thanks too social distancing, you can actually see them properly if you can get a ticket. The Catalogue does the exhibition justice.

Since this is an exhibition catalog, it deals largely with works in the (spectacular) event at the National Gallery in London. It does not claim or pretend to be a thorough overview of the artist's life and work. There is a giant pile of books, articles, studies, theses & dissertations, websites, and other sources of information on this artist. There is also what I consider to be a confusing body of opinions on which paintings are hers or not (or sometimes just partially). So, here is a collection of essays by some of the most reputable art experts in the world, many of whom have published important studies of Artemisia's life and work. The book is edited by the curator of this exhibition, whose essays and bibliography give both detailed information about the works in the exhibition as well as places to go for more information. The reproductions of the art in the book are beautiful with many close up of details. The book itself is beautifully bound with high quality paper and ink making a book that is a pleasure to read and own. Artemisia related studies are difficult for casual students (like me) because information and opinions are updated and changed all the time. One value of this book is that it puts a lot of information in one place, and the reader gets to read letters, see related paintings, be exposed to conflicting opinions,--all while being led by the amazing curator Letizia Treves and the richly trained and experienced experts who author many of the essays. Unlike some other reviewers, I think this a fabulous book. If a friend of mine had just read the fiction book "The Passion of Artemisia", by Susan Vreeland, and asked me for a suggested way to learn more about the artist, I would recommend this book first. Many others are excellent, but this is a great place to start. Plus, it looks great on the shelf. Added notes. Sept 26 2020. I have almost finished reading this book more closely. This book includes quite a bit of new research, newly attributed (to Artemisia) paintings, and items from private collections being part of the exhibition. The praise in my earlier comments was well stated.
