English Sentence Structure

Prompt delivery. I bought this to assist someone in their use of the English language. An excellent book, I bought another for myself. As an author ("Journey to Aravaipa Canyon"- sold through Amazon) it seemed to be an good source book for me, also.

Having taught English as a Second all my life, this is the only book, when used correctly, can get anyone, at any level of English or Education to Speak!! It is the 'Bible' of correct grammatical progression. Also, it is basically "Audio-Lingual" which other books are not. Having said that, a course or program needs to be supplemented with other current books that offer the student opportunities for increased vocabulary, culture, etc.

This is a classic look at English language structures that can be very useful for anyone teaching English to speakers of other languages. While the "habit formation" psychology of audio lingual method has been eclipsed by more cognitive approaches, it is still very likely that English speakers regularly use and reuse a definable body of structures. This group of patterns is very large, but it is finite. Chomsky did us a disfavor when he said that all language is infinitely creative. Theoretically, yes, but given that we don't invent whole new structures every time we speak or write, it may be useful to introduce language learners to the ones that occur most frequently. This book is a veritable catalog of the most frequently used sentence patterns of English, and very useful to the teacher trying to offer their students immediately useful target language.

Very helpful. Just what I needed

The book is comprehensive, clearly written, and provides a good number of practice exercises. I do not feel it can be used with Low Intermediate ESL learners as an independent text. It is quite useful for classroom explanation and oral/written classroom exercises, and I will use it that way in my classes emphasizing sentence structure. I did buy the English Structure Practice text (Folse), and am using it as a homework volume with this book. The two are very compatible, making a good team for in-class and at-home learning.

Bought this book for some student who were just beginning to build sentences, I found it very clear and simple to use. It repeats the same sentence in different way. The students soon began learning. Good book
