This is a book that could have gone horribly wrong. The abduction, rape and torture of a realtor is quite a difficult subject to read about and could have made for a very depressing book however Chevy Stevens has managed to do a fantastic job of making this an interesting book which is actually a pleasure to read. I wasn't convinced I was going to enjoy this book but it had such good reviews I decided I had to give it a try. Maybe enjoy isn't the right word to use, but I found this book engrossing, I really wanted to find out what happened next. At many points you are given titbits of information which hint at something that has happened and then leave you for quite some time before you find out the full story, this is done so skilfully that I was surprised to hear that this was the first novel Chevy Stevens has written. The characters are so cleverly drawn out that you sympathise with Annie throughout the book and despair at her mother, but the most surprising thing is the mixture of feelings that The Freak draws out; from complete repulsion to an element of sympathy. There is also a quite disturbing twist at the end of the book which I really didn't see coming and it's very rare that I can say a book takes me completely by surprise. I think this was an ingenious title for a book, Still Missing refers to the fact that the girl Annie was when she was kidnapped is still missing and will never return, she has been replaced with a different person due to the ordeal that she has gone through. I can't wait for whatever Chevy Stevens produces next, if it half as good as this then it will be well worth a read.

If you're a fan of psychological thrillers with intricate plots, complex characters, and unexpected twists, "Still Missing" is an absolute must-read. Be warned, though: once you start reading, you won't be able to stop. It's a haunting and thrilling journey that will stay with you long after you turn the final page. I couldn't put it down! This book is a rollercoaster of emotions, with its intense storyline and expertly developed characters. The pacing is flawless, and the narrative's tension builds relentlessly, leaving you on the edge of your seat. Each chapter uncovers new layers of mystery while slowly revealing the secrets beneath the surface. I eagerly turned page after page, desperate to discover the truth. The plot twist is so brilliantly executed that it left me breathless, questioning everything I thought I knew. It's a rare gem in the thriller genre that shocks even the most seasoned readers. I highly recommend it

If my mother were Lorraine O'Sullivan, I'd have shot her self-absorbed butt and fed her decomposing corpse to the coyotes, while whistling the theme to Deliverance through my missing two front teeth. Which would have presented me with one of two scenarios: either I would have been locked up so fast I wouldn't have had time to stop whistling let alone scream for an attorney, or Clayton Falls might have thrown a parade for me on the spot, to include fire engines and penny candy and clowns and the local marching band. Either way, though, it would have ended in fireworks. But aside from parades and jail cells, STILL MISSING creeped me out something fierce. Heck, Deliverance (which I should disclose I haven't seen) with its mountain men and male rape scene sounds more like rainbows and pixie sticks compared to what transpires in this novel. STILL MISSING is told through flashbacks via Annie O'Sullivan's therapy sessions, as she talks about her yearlong mountain cabin confinement, daily rape, scheduled pee breaks, and attempts to escape. David, her captor, brings a new definition to the word psychopath. There's also a second narrative recounting events in her life following her escape, and frankly, it doesn't sound like her life has improved all that much. Annie sleeps in closets, jumps at any sound that races through the night, and shuts down from the world around her. She's a victim in every sense of the word, and her strong, vibrant nature and social life suffer accordingly. Reading about her dramatic change was near gut-wrenching, but this was a book I wasn't about to put down. With its plot twists, true-to-life characters, confinement issues, and individuals with psychopathic tendencies, this novel has something for everyone, minus the kiddos. With her debut novel, Chevy Stevens has already proven that she's a psychological thriller master. I've already purchased her follow-up NEVER KNOWING, and I eagerly await the opportunity to be creeped out all over again. I just need to take a few deep breaths before I make the plunge. This is a very readable & addictive first-person debut novel. It tells the harrowing story of 30-something realtor Annie O'Sullivan's abduction, the year she spent as a psychopath's prisoner, and the steps of healing she takes as she tells the story to her psychiatrist. The plot line was terrific, incredibly unique. As Annie tells her horrific kidnapping story in first person to her shrink, the honest, brutal, tragic story makes it cut to the bone. Through most of this novel, I wasn't sure I liked it. It's riveting reading, yes, but it is also extremely disturbing and not for the faint of heart but then, once the big twist was revealed, I was blown away by how well the whole story was crafted. Annie O'Sullivan was a successful realtor until the day a man abducted her and kept her captive in a remote mountain cabin for a year. Now Annie's so traumatized, she sleeps in her closet and can't work. Annie's nickname for her abductor is The Freak, and it is apt. He is a terrifying guy with deep psychological issues and very strict rules. Crossing him by say, using the bathroom at a non-scheduled time, can lead to bizarre punishments such as having to drink from the toilet. What puzzles her is just how much he seems to know about her and her family, leading her to think that his crime was not random and that even if she escapes him, it isn't over. Annie's experience changes her a lot - so much so that I almost couldn't recognise the broken woman swearing at her shrink and shrinking away from her friends and family as the same independent woman we see in her "flashbacks". Reality is even more difficult to confront in the second half of the book. I read this novel quickly, driven by its questions--what will the Freak, as Annie dubs her kidnapper, do to her next? How will she escape? The pacing of the entire book was perfect. Twists along the way brought unexpected surprises. I highly recommend this read for "thriller/suspense/crime" fans, just don't make any plans to do anything else - it's addictive!
