It's up to you. I use baby wash with it.

why does it turn pink after awhile although the soap we use is clear? i rinse it after every use and keep it dry. where is this pink color coming from

It's definitely the water. We used these in our old apt and never had that happen. Now at the new apt the drain and toilet bowl both start to show pink between cleanings and the sponges have started turning pink as well (through 2 sets now). I'll have to Google what in the water causes that color.
