First Impressions
I am an standard consumer, and bought this product as an upgrade from a pair of klipsch s4i that I previously used for commuting. After my klipsch failing multiple times due to probably poor durability (of course, I treat my gear with care), I decided to try these rugged looking on-ear headphones in hopes of a more durable option. I realize that a on-ear headphone is not a complete replacement for an in-ear, and will be looking to replace my in-ear soon, but I wanted to test to see how an on-ear headphone fares as replacement for the roles of an in-ear (which I believe the owner of the v-moda, Val Kolton, originally intended these to be). If all goes well, I intend to make these my primary commuting headphones and keep an in-ear as secondary. I am also new to v-moda and was excited to try them out from the amount of praise I heard. I do not collect headphones or have much experience with many, but I do a fair amount of research before I make a significant purchase, so hopefully my review will give a first-timer's insight into the V-moda XS. -Sound- I listen to mostly EDM, D&B, trance, dubsteb, etc. the bass heavy music, as well as alternative and rock. Again, I am not an audiophile so I do not really obsess over 100% sound reproduction. That being said, the sound is impressive coming from such a tiny device. In comparison to the ATH-M50s or the klipsch s4i (only headphones I own as you might have guessed), these are up to par, and if not, better. In a quiet environment, the sound is clear, crisp, vibrant, and I can feel the gentle waves pulsating through my cranium. As for more in-depth comparison, I think others have done a better review on sound. There is not really much more that can be described better than as experienced in person. -Build- This was one of the main points I looked at when looking for headphones to replace my earbuds. I still think earbuds are awesome, but their durability will always be surpassed by headphones of similar quality range. I wanted something to last me for a while, and provide me with access to good quality tunes for hours of daily use. The V-Moda XS is constructed of metal hinges, kevlar covered wires, and a very flexible leather headband; all components feel like it will last for years to come with proper care. They also have beyond military-level MIL-STD-810G quality standards according to their website. I have no idea what this means, but this is exactly what I want when I am using these daily, in danger of bending or pulling the cord, dropping the headphones on concrete, or zip-lining down a building on fire using the headphones and cables while blasting some Hans Zimmer. -Comfort- Priced at $200, I expect these to be the most comfortable thing to put on my head, and they are. I had used and unused? headphones many times before because they began to hurt my ears after an hour of wear. These come nowhere close. I used these headphones for approximately 4 hours straight, listening to music, and my ears were fine. I believe this is where most of the resources were spent on trying to get the clamping force and cushioning just right in perfect equilibrium, and I believe they have achieved it. I consider my head to be average, and these cans felt natural on my head right out of the box. I have yet to find how long it will take for my ears to begin feeling discomfort, but at this pace, I may never reach that point. -Size- These things are tiny. The case fits into my average size palms, and the cans are cute (lost all my man cred here). I can comfortably throw these in my backpack, not adding any bulk or fearing it will break. They conform to my head very well and does not make me look like a Cyberman. I knew that they would be small from the reviews and descriptions, but I was still surprised when I received them. -Noise Isolation- The only complaint I have about the V-moda XS is noise isolation. I knew beforehand what I would be sacrificing isolation for comfort and durability, but I do miss the isolation of my in-ears. As expected of on-ear headphones, the noise isolation is not as good, and although on the average side of on-ears, I wish the XS somehow had better isolation. They seemed to keep the "v-vents" in the design which apparently improves the sound stage, but if it were up to me, I would rather sacrifice the sound stage for isolation. At 50% iPhone volume, I still hear mainly music, but noises such as the rumbles of the bus still penetrate. I was also concerned for the sound leakage as I get very irritated by people who ignorantly blast their music for the world to hear, and I also hate being a hypocrite. There is a good test video on this on youtube by UrAvgConsumer, but from my personal tests, up to 50% seemed like a safe level with a good seal, while more than 50% starts to leak quite a bit, so 50%-75% should be used accordingly to the environment, and well, just never go to 100% unless you're looking to get stares on the bus. In positive light, I will be less likely to miss a bus stop or get ran over. -Price- As of now, the XS runs around $200, and I figure it will for quite some time. It is a lot of dough for such a tiny thing, but considering the amount of research that must have gone into perfecting the comfort, and the quality (both build and sound) of the overall product justifies the price. They also provide a very nice hard shell case which includes a v-strap for holding cords. -Miscellaneous- -Trivial problem, but I wish the cord had a volume rocker. -I love the color orange, but I still wish the cord had been black, since they are going with the low profile/stealth theme anyway -The sliders and the cliqfold hinge clicks. I love clicks. -Would have been nice if the cord plugs could click lock. Did I mention I love clicks? -Matte finish resists fingerprints! -OVERALL- I would rate these at 4.5. Excellent build and sound quality, superb compact form, and indestructible, -0.5 for isolation, so I rounded up and gave it a 5. From reading forums, it seems like v-moda listens to a lot of its fans' opinions, so I am excited for their next iteration. As for now, although still testing, I think these will be my primary commuting headphones. TL;DR: These headphones have amazing sound and build quality and a very compact size. I wish noise isolation was a bit better. Would highly recommend.

Recommended Purchase
I Purchased the VMODA-XS (Matt black) for myself as a B'day gift, and was a little hesitant about buying them because of there size and also was a little pricey at $170+ retail for a compact design (I picked them up for $148 on special) , I really was not expecting a great deal from these headphones but would give them a shot, guess I was also intrigued with the materials used in the design ( Kevlar reinforced SpeakEasy Microphone Control Cable) and they claimed to have a "nearly indestructible headband"... I felt like I was buying something military grade. I had also read some bad reviews about the design of the headphones over the ear being tight, I had owned the Sennheiser PC 333D and had a similar problem with headphones that felt like your ears where coming together and after 10 or 15 minutes my ears would be burning and I would have to take them off. Review: After having these for a few months now I can honestly say they are one of the best headphones I've owned, I am on the phone most of the day in meetings and they fit snug with no pain after long hours, you can feel pressure where they are pushing in to grip your ear but there is no discomfort what so ever ( must be the memory foam). sounds are superb listening to music and I find myself looking behind me when I watch movies as the sounds are all around you. When you open the case the first thing you see are the nicely folded and placed black shiny metal headphones with the cushioned ear pieces and what appears to be leather trim and on the top shell there is a small loop that has an orange kevlar coated headphone / Microphone cable. I also bought the VMODA boom pro gaming mic ($31) and is a great compliment to the headphones, really turns them into a full functional headset ( boom Microphone will not fit inside the case) . Pros: - Noise isolation is superb - Excellent Highs , mids and lows the base and trebles come across well balanced and have an all round great sound to them - Sleek design and very solid structure, headphones fold up very securely, when you open them up you can hear they lock in nice and tight with no play at all - Nice cushion pads ( Memory Foam Cushions) around the ear, they are good for hours of listening ( my ears have yet to hurt from wearing for long periods of time) - Excellent hard shell case that clips onto your bags for easy access - VMODA Boom mic a must if you use Skype or other online chat applications Cons: I am Yet to find any, maybe if you have an abnormally large noggin you may run into some problems but then you would not be shopping for these I would highly recommend these Headphones and if you find your experience is similar or different please share.

almost great, but not quite
i bought, and returned these 2 weeks ago...i'm not someone who pretends to hear things i don't really hear, but my impression of these is based on 3 (mobile) different headphones and 2 iems i use a lot ( yeah yeah iems are not headphones, different soundstage, i get it ) ...the headphones/iems that i have used for a long time and that i know well with certain types of music are: dt1350 by beyerdynamic, sennheiser momentum on ears, grado rs2i, ety e4's, and the criminally underappreciated brainwavz S1 ( which have to be one of the best vaues out there, what a spectacular in ear )...anyway, to my ears - and sticking to more of a mobile situation - i will just focus on the vmodas vs. the sennheiser momentum on ears and the dt1350's ...i spent almost a week comparing these 3, i used my fiio x3, with hi rez tracks from hdtracks and my own ripped flac files using dbpoweramp. in the end i decided to send the vmodas back...while i have to give them a 6 stars out of 5 if i could, for the build quality, not to mention the sex appeal, i do think they are the weakest of the 3 ( again comparing the xs to the dt1350 and sennheiser momentum on ears ). surprisingly, i found the bass on the vmodas to be almost floppy - NOT repeat NOT saying it was floppy, but it's darn close. the sub bass is there, which is nice - i am SOOOOO sick of headphones and iems with that phony emphasized bass with non existent sub bass - so i give kudos to the vmodas for the sub bass, however it is not as tight and punchy as the dt1350s. i find the sennheiser momentum on ears to be superb for 50s west coast jazz, which i focus on a lot, but for progressive stuff, i prefer fast, clear phones, more along the lines of my grados. to my ears the dt1350's have the best of both worlds, superb, i mean just superb bass, sub bass, great mids and clarity and great on the treble. the big drawback of course, is how poor their comfort is, until you get them broken in, and until you get used to them. the vmodas crush the dt1350's in comfort and build, but the dt1350's take the prize in sound to my ears. another odd thing though about the vmodas, was for me, the fit. i found them to be super comfortable, but they weren't tight enough for me, they slid around on head a bit much, and i would say i have a pretty average size melon lol. i spent a lot of time listening to, specifically, porcupine tree discs and peter gabriel disks, with all 3 headphones. i even compared them quite a bit playing them thru my aune T1 and comparing them to my jewels, my grado rs2i's...no comparison there, the grados play porcupine tree thru my T1 like nothing else....the S1 and ety 4's are such different animals there is not much point in comparing them, other than to say that the S1's are a truly spectacular value in iems's - why they are not winning a bunch of awards is beyond me. anyway to sum up my rambling, i like the overall sound of the dt1350s much better than the xs, i like the bass and treble response better on the senny MOE and the dt1350s, i think that both the dt1350s and the xs's have superb mids, beating out the senn MOEs to my ears for mids. it really bothers me how loose i found the bass to be on the xs's....not bad, NOT saying that at all, but certainly not as tight as the dt1350s nor the senn MOE's.....do yourself a favor, and get a hi rez player like a fiio or ibasso, and listen to high rez versions of porcupine trees' disc 'in abstentia thru some dt1350s if you have a chance...nirvana

I really wanted to love these headphones
I really wanted to love these headphones, but I just didn't feel they lived up to the price tag. I'll admit: The build quality is VERY good. They feel incredibly solid and they look amazing. The removable cable with dual connection points is a great feature, and the cable itself is outstanding. The case is also great. However, I felt that the build quality caused these headphones to be a little too heavy for their size. I might have gotten used to this -- however, the complete lack of swivel points on the earcups is an even bigger downside. I don't know about you, but my ears face out with a slight forward angle, but the earcups on these headphones face directly inward with no angle or offset. This prevented the earcups from resting completely flat against my ears, and it just didn't feel right. This was the deal-breaker for me. It's possible that I could have bent the earcup hangers slightly to compensate for this, but I didn't think it was worth the risk. I felt the sound quality was very well-balanced with a nice amount of bass punch. However, when I compared these to my ATH M50s, I just felt that the M50s were better in both sound and comfort. I didn't have unrealistic expectations on the sound, since these are on-ear -- and obviously personal preference comes into play -- but I did have expectations on comfort, and these fell short. I'm glad I got to try these out, because they are super cool looking and very well made, but in the end I sent them back. If V-MODA ever decides to add swivels or make the earcup angle adjustable, I'll be happy to buy a pair again.

Best bang-for-the-buck headphones I've ever bought
I almost never write reviews, but I'm so impressed with these headphones that I almost feel obligated to review them. In the past, I never paid much attention to v-moda headphones (even though I've always thought they looked nice) because a number of reviews I read a while back indicated v-modas were generally very bass heavy and sonically tuned to rival Beats products, which didn't appeal to me at all. Recently, it dawned on me that I listen to music while exercising far more than any other time. My previous workout cans ("The Construct" by Philips/O'Neill) were OK, but a big step down in sound quality from my other headphones, which I certainly wouldn't want to use while exercising. They're just way too fragile. It got me wondering why nobody seems to make great sounding headphones designed to accommodate an active lifestyle. Determined to find something better, I scoured the web. That's when v-moda showed up on my radar. Previously, I never knew that v-moda's products were specifically designed to be durable. I didn't know about their two-year warranty either, or their "Immortal Life" trade-in program which replaces your broken headphones, regardless of condition, at half price. Surprisingly, my search turned up very few people who actually use v-modas for exercising, but I did come across a post on a headphone forum by v-moda's CEO who says he and other v-moda employees use their products quite often while running, hiking and climbing. I also found many reviews saying great things about the sound quality and comfort of the XS, so I was eager to give them a try. The only thing that made me a bit hesitant was that some reviewers said the headphones slid off when tilting their heads up or down. Many people made no mention of it at all, however, so I went ahead and placed my order. I'm really glad that I did! The first thing I noticed was how solid and artfully crafted they were. Photos don't really do them justice. Hooked up to my Fiio X5, they sounded great right out of the box. They're not what I'd call neutral; the bass is definitely more present than in any of my other headphones, but it's detailed and doesn't overpower the overall presentation. After listening critically for a while, I decided that I preferred a bit more detail in the top end. A slight bit of EQing later, I was smiling from ear to ear. Honestly, I don't think I could be happier with my purchase. The XS is so solidly built and backed by such a fantastic warranty and trade-in program that I have no reservations about wearing them during my workouts. They're considerably more comfortable than my old Philips cans and, thankfully, they stay on my head just fine. Aggressively shaking my head around would likely cause them to shift or maybe even fall off, but I don't generally make those kinds of movements. For that, you'd probably need a fairly uncomfortable set of headphones with a vice-like grip. I'm so very impressed that such a compact, solidly built, stylish pair of headphones can produce such a full, detailed, spacious sound and still manage to be affordably priced. These might not be the absolute best sounding headphones I own, but they're certainly the most versatile, and they do sound great. The XS has narrowed the sound quality gap between my headphones so much that I really don't regret spending most of my time listening to my workout cans anymore. I'll be using these things a lot, even when I could be listening to my other, more expensive cans.

V-Moda XS headphones - Two Thumbs Up!
I do recommend the VModa headphones because #1 they deliver. They deliver a sound that's unbiased. They do not accentuate frequencies but remain neutral. Great sound in, means great sound out. Product reviewers should remember the sound of a recording will be only as good as the quality of the recording. A vinyl record does not sound as good as a cassette recording; a cassette recording does not sound as good as a cd recording. When comparing a cd recording to a mp3 file, compact disc recordings do sound better than mp3 files. There will be some frequency loss converting cds to mp3 files. The sound stage of the XS is wonderful. Listening to "The Chipmunk Song", for example, I can definitely hear the Chipmunks' spatial sound presence. Listening to a sound track of a commercial on Google Play, demonstrated the XS' ability to project bass frequencies that are clear and accurate -- not the loose uncontrolled sound of some of the other brands of headphones. If that's the type sound you want, look elsewhere. Keep in mind, quality of the recording does matter. The build quality will leave you confident; they feel like they are built to last. The XS headphones are made of metal not of plastic like some of the rival companies' headphones. The XS headphones feel very rugged, yet soft. They are comfortable on my ears. The ear cushions dampen the sound around me considerably but do not totally eliminate the surrounding noise. The added plus of the XS headphones is the compact folding size and the compact and durable carrying case that is included. I purchased the XS headphones because I wanted some great sounding durable headphones for gym workouts. I love the comfort and sound quality they provide. I do not recommend the XS headphones for use at the gym if you are a heavy sweater. They might be sweat resistant but they are not sweat proof. I do recommend the VModa XS headphones because #2 -- VModa offers a great warranty. My research found that some headphone manufacturers only warrant their products for ninety days to a year but not VModa. VModa's warranty for the XS headphones is TWO years! I personally prefer to buy goods and services from those companies who stand behind their products and claims. Why should I spend top dollar on headphones and only get a ninety day to a year warranty? Research the product warranties for yourself -- don't just take my word about them. I had questions about their warranty promise and contacted the VModa Support Team. They responded to my questions and concerns appropriately. VModa gave me Six-Star Service! I am very pleased with my XS headphones -- Two Thumbs Up! I would buy them again. I also like the fact that I have the option to customize them, if I choose to do so. It must be non-copyrighted images of course.

Very uncomfortable to hang on the back of the neck
Sound is awesome as many before me already stated that nicely. However, there are two main drawbacks: 1. The 3.5mm cable end doesn't fit my phone (HTC One M8), it's a bit loose. The "six star service" asked my to cut the cord and take a picture of it, for them to send me a new one. What are they thinking? It's a puny cable :/ 2. The headphones are virtually impossible to hang on the back of the neck. It's too tight on the neck. That's a dealbreaker for me. Too bad I got it as a present and can't return it.

Will fall apart
The headphones themselves are decent enough in regard to sound quality. I was very happy with them. However, I mildly regretted going with an "on-ear" headphone as I use them to study for hours at a time and as advertised, they very much sit ON your ear. Which means that the outer portion of your ear rests between the cushion and your skull. After a while you feel the pinch. Second, you'll notice in the photo that the headphone itself became unfastened from the head piece. This has happened twice now. The first time it was under warranty and they fixed it. However, after that, they said tough luck and offered me their "immortal life program" in which I would have to trade in my device and receive 20% off an upgrade. The fact that this headphone is likely to fall apart on you is reason enough not to buy it. You're spending close to 200$ on this. Spend it more wisely on something with less of a design flaw. The screws fastening the ear piece to the headpiece are freaking tiny and I haven't been able to find a replacement. I'm stuck using my airpods for absolutely everything and consider this purchase an absolute waste of money. Best of luck with them if you go through with the purchase.

Compact & Bombproof Headphones - Professional Quality with Looks to Match
Being a travelling Audio Visual Technician, the most important headphone attributes to me are durability, compactness, professional features & a reliably true representation of sound. I took months deciding which new headphones would best suit me & the V-Moda XS appears to balance all these needs in equal measure. I’d prefer writing a 6-month review but am so impressed after just 2 days that I couldn’t wait to shout about this great find. Subjectively, this review won’t be music to everyone’s ears but from my perspective it already feels like V-Moda have eliminated every single issue I’ve encountered over a 15-year career working with portable monitoring headphones & crafted the XS’s just for me, in one awesome looking package to boot: bonus. Delivered to my local collection point at the time promised & in a sturdy, attractive product box. The included zip-up travel case, which snugly holds folded headphones & cable, fits in the palm of my hand & seems solid enough for a kick-about at Twickenham. It’s hard, contoured design minimises wasted space & benefits from the natural structural integrity of the clam shell it resembles. I’ve removed the mini carabiner supplied but it could easily clip onto bag, belt-loop or bike if that’s how you roll. The headphones themselves are very compact, folded or unfolded. Their strikingly unique design is aggressively modern with a nod to retro-aviation, while the engineering & quality displayed by the all-metal framework, hinges & screws exceeds high-end equivalents at twice the price from long-established manufactures. The hinges make a reassuringly satisfying metallic click when opened or closed, which sounds pure class & lets you know they’re ready for business. There’s a good amount of padding on the headband which fits my small head well with arms fully retracted. Each arm extends about an inch so all but the most boffin-sized noggins should be off to the races. While the headband lies evenly across my head without gaps, it’s not particularly grippy so not suited to sports use but listening on the bus/at home/work/studio should pose no problems. The on-ear cups fit perfectly & snugly over my wee ears but the larger over-ear V-Moda headphones may be more comfortable for prolonged listening periods if overall size isn’t an issue for you. There’s enough flex & memory in the headband for DJ’s to use off-the-neck, though the cups themselves don’t swivel on left/right axis – only up/down ensuring a good seal with ears. I’m no DJ so personal preference is advised. Overall weight & bulk are surprisingly low considering all that lovely aluminium, giving comfort in use or at rest around the neck. Although bass-heads may prefer a louder headphone with bias towards a fuller low-end drive, this wasn’t important to me & I found the bass clean, punchy & well defined without interference to other frequencies or vice versa. My reference audio files have never sounded better & I’m able to pick out all the small nuances that give me a kick from song to song, though I’ve only had other on-ear headphones for comparison. Incoming & outgoing noise isolation through the closed-back cups is good enough for me but not 100% so use in extremely noisy or silent environments may be semi-problematic to some. A medium length & highly visible orange braided cable is included, which features in-line mic & call button for use with phones + natty 45degree angled jack at source end – bit of a gimmick but one of several USP’s which represent the attention to detail breathed over every inch of this product. Some have mentioned cable sends noise through mic when rubbed on clothing but personally untested nor relevant to how I’ll use these headphones so either way I couldn’t give a monkey’s myself. The cable is fully detachable/replaceable (essential for pro cans) but what makes this model stand out are the twin inputs on left & right cups, meaning you can choose which side to plumb into: sounds like another gimmick but in reality, I couldn’t tell you how many times I’ve been distracted in the past by a cable trailing across my ever-changing workspaces & sound desks. It’s also good having the back-up port if one fails outside warranty. Equally impressive is the option to use the second port as a pick-up for your BFF’s cans too if you feel like sharing, or at a push send a monitored feed from your desk if running short on outputs. The ports can be blanked-off with small plastic bungs, which are fiddly for large fingers but worth having & using all the same. I’m a huge fan of the standard jacks supplied, which firmly push-in/pull-out without needing a twist – I’ve found locking cables a weak point on other headphones & a frustration when cables can’t be interchanged nor quickly uncoupled for moving about the studio. I’m surprised no ¼ inch jack adapter supplied & would prefer inclusion of longer coiled cable option as standard but these are my only negatives, which I’m happy to accept if helps keep unit cost of such thoughtfully produced kit this low. The fixed cable linking left & right cups, although fully braided itself, is partly exposed either end between headband & cups so needs a certain amount of respect (i.e., zipped away during storage or in transit). Spare cables, ear pads & other accessories are available as options, as are personalised side plates which look seriously tempting but may not be easily available in the UK. The slightly cheaper silver & white XS option will look good to the Mrs or out on the street but my industry is black all the way & mine are proper, full-on stealth-bomber black. 2-year warranty + Immortal Life guarantee tells me this product is built to last & that V-Moda is a serious audio player I want to do business with. It’s no surprise design, style & engineering come from California, Italy & Japan respectively, though I note final assembly (whatever that stretches to) occurs in China. Pretty standard I guess but still disappointed my hard-earned is funding a kleptocracy. You can buy cheaper, smaller headphones that are basic, ugly, tinny & will fall apart or plush, all singing, all dancing studio cans at the expense of valuable space & cost. The V-Moda XS seems to take the best from all these worlds & is like nothing else I’ve seen. Great sound & features, ridiculously portable, beautiful design & build quality that genuinely raises the bar. In an ideal world, headphones would last me 5 years plus: This is the first set I’ve owned that look like they could actually deliver that small slice of utopia. I commend V-Moda for producing a set of headphones absolutely unique to the market at a price I’m happy to pay…I’d probably pay a little more if I knew production took place alongside design or engineering. Very much looking forward to using in anger at a sound desk or video camera near you all soon… UPDATE: Used for a few weeks now & these cans just keep making me happier! Absolutely no ear pain experienced even after 3+ hours constant use. The headband makes contact across the width of my cranium, which disperses weight well. Great sound quality across the board. Small solid case fits any nook & cranny in bag & kept headphones in perfect condition on working road trip across Europe. I can confirm the cable does send noise to cans/mic during calls when rubbed on clothing but I think this is a trait of all braided cables - I still prefer braided for durability & this doesn't bother; if it did I would just swap out the cable. I've tested these with other jack to jack cables & they all work fine. Phones are comfortable around neck & cable easy to plug-in whilst wearing. Even at full volume I've found little distortion to sound. I don't use for pleasure listening - If I did I'd definitely want louder drivers & would opt for larger over-ear model. UPDATE 2: A couple of months of professional use have exposed an issue. Cups started to wobble, on closer inspection 7 of the 8 hinge screws were very loose, the 8th was missing completely. Ordered replacement screws (M1.6 x 3mm) from auction site then tightened with allen key (1.5mm) using threadlock. 2 further weeks of use & threadlock is doing its job well - cups feel firm once more. Problem rectified & still in love with these cans, just sad & surprised to find a major fault so soon after purchase.
