Satisfied. Will meet my needs.
I am satisfied with my purchase of this wire but I am starting from the premise that I required 14 gauge wire or perhaps 12 gauge wire. I have ordered 14 gauge CCA wire and expect it later this week. My concerns of the CCA (copper coated aluminum) is that it is reported to ‘melt’ when soldering, is often misrepresented as a gauge larger in size than what it really is, has a potential for corrosion/oxidation and that it does not carry the same amount of amperage as 100% copper wire. Size: You will see that I compared this 10 gauge GS Power wire (Red) to some 12 AWG stranded house wire (White) that I purchased about 20 years ago from a building supply outlet. As you can see in the picture below, the size of the 10 gauge wire (GS Power) as compared to the 12 AWG wire, is very difficult to tell but it measures with a micrometer as being just slightly larger but not likely in the class of 10 AWG copper wire. 10 Gauge (GS Power): 0.088 inches. 12 AWG (White wire): 0.085 inches. Size conclusion: This did not concern me since I am really comparing to 14 gauge needs and I can easily double this up for the runs that I need a full 12 gauge or 10 gauge needs and still not approach the price of 100% copper. Solder: I was able to solder with what I felt was a successful saturation of the strands with a 260 Watt soldering gun without any melting of the actual strands of the 10 gauge GS Power CCA wire. The insulation of the wire certainly melted near the connection but I would plan to cover it with dual wall heat shrink tubing. The part that concerned me is that I was able to pull the strands apart without a lot of effort (perhaps 20-25 pounds - just guesstimating). The copper wire soldered more easily and even with 50 pounds of force I could not pull it apart. Solder conclusion: I don’t think I would trust a solder joint. If it gets strained and could eventually shake/break loose. I had already planned to use compression fittings and dual wall heat shrink tubing (with the glue in the wall). Not only will the glue help to waterproof the connection (thus limiting oxidation issues); but, it will help to hold the connection together. Bottom line: I can make this wire work. Just make sure that you size wire for larger than your needs and limit oxidation/corrosion potential by keeping as many connections waterproof, as possible.
