People like to keep certain distances between themselves and other people or thigns. And this invisible bubble of space that constitutes each person's "territory" is one of the key dimensions of modern society. Edward T. Hall, author of The Silent Language, introduced the science of proxemics to demonstrate how man's use of space can affect personal and business reltions, cross-cultural interactions, architecture, city planning, and urban renewal. "One of the few extraordinary books about mankind's future which should be read by every thoughtful person." โ Chicago Tribune "This is a book of impressive genius, replete with unusually sharp observations." โRichard J. Neutra, Landscape Architecture Review: An important work on the design of built environments for human utility - This is an old but very important report of research on how the built environment affects human interactions. Review: Very Rare Book from my long-ago college days - - And one I was delighted to find again - Answers a lot of questions about why different cultures have trouble understanding each other - and we need more of that. Illustration of how various cultures think and reason is invaluable; as is why we keep backing up or someone else keeps moving forward when engaged in face to face conversation. Yep, you need to know that!

Memorable insights
I discovered this book some decades ago when I was researching a college paper. It has some amazing insights about our own biology and anthropology and how we related to each other and the space around us in every day life. Remembering a book for 40 years and then jumping on it when I found it again, I have to give it five stars.

For an introduction to visual sociology this book is essential ...
For an introduction to visual sociology this book is essential. Hall was the most successful pioneer of the usage of photography as sociological evidence. I used many of his examples in my introductory courses in sociology and for today students, his visual samples come always handy and enticing.

A study of physical spaces in different settings between people
I thought this book was something pertaining to the paranormal spirit dimension, but, it wasn't. It was more like a guide a psychologist would use for managing people in places.

The Context is Interesting
For the context I cannot say much, because of the special topic which is clear scientific, but the quality of pare is not too good!

tough read, valuable information
since the book is already quite old, the language used is often not easily understood, especially when english is not the first language. The layout is also outdated. Nonetheless the content of the book is very interesting and has the potential to change one's perception of perception and human life in general. The author mentions the reasons for the most common types of intercultural conflict, which is knowledge everyone that seeks harmonious relationships has to know. Recommended!

An introduction to proxemics
The term "proxemics" was coined by E.T. Hall himself to describe "space as a system of communication". This book dates back to 1966 and, while some content may appear dated, it still remains a must-read for those who are fascinated by the "language of space" in different cultures. What Lebensraum means to the Germans or why an open-door policy is regarded with suspicion in some parts of the world is explained here in Hall's very readable prose. An excellent book!
