On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon and, to an audience of over 450 million people, proclaimed his step a "giant leap for mankind." This Eagle Scout built his own model planes as a little boy and then grew up to be a test pilot for experimental aircraft before becoming an astronaut. Over 80 black-and-white illustrations bring Armstrong's story to life. Review: good read - Purchased for grandson. Learned along with him. Review: An Excellent Biography Series - This excellent beginning biography is from the "Who Was?" series of more than 250 early reader biographies. The biography is a fine introduction to the first man to walk on the surface of the moon. He lived an exceptional life. One of the best parts of this series are the inserts of related people and events such as the Wright Brothers and Charles Lindbergh help to add to the life story of Armstrong. The series serves as a model for somewhat older readers to write and illustrate their own biographies of their heroes, male and female. For example, a complementary life story of Amelia Earhart.

Great for the classroom
I used this book for students to study a person in history to write a report on. This was for a 4th grade classroom. Each student read the novel on their own and filled out a novel study that I created for non-fiction books. Students were able to follow the book with ease and understand what they were reading. There were several pictures to aid in understanding. There is also a timeline that helps students understand the timeline of events as they read. Very great resource.

Great Book!
I purchased this for my 6 year old for a school assignment. Not only did he love it but I did as well. I wasn't born when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon and although I knew he was the first man to walk on the moon, I'm embarrassed to say I never took the time to learn about his life. Together my son and I learn so much about Neil Armstrong! I highly recommend this book. I look forward to reading others in the series.

4th grade book report
My 9 year old son loved this book. This was one of three he read in the series. Walt Disney, Neil Armstrong and Albert Einstein. Each were great reads and he loved the information he got from the books. I enjoyed him reasing it out loud to me the second time he read it. My sons 4th grade class was assigned a biography book to read and report on. There was plenty of information as far as where they were born, how they accomplished what they each did and some sideline info on each of them that was interesting. However, the size of the words to a page and the difficulty would be more appropriate for 3rd grade not 4th.

Wonderful book, wonderful series
My son really enjoyed this book. The whole series is wonderful as he has read several of them, but who doesn't like learning more about Neil Armstrong. It has really made him understand more about the man and the moon mission. This one in particular was fun for him because he is fascinated by outer space. It helped him want to learn more about the moon and solar system.

Gut
