Is it a good adhesive for joining wood?

This is not the product for joining wood, you would want to use a regular epoxy and add some fillers.

What do you use to thin this?

This is not designed to be thinned, it is a 1:1 mix ratio.

I want to end up with a 1/4 inch thick surface. I'm reading that I should pour in 2 batches? Are there any caveats for multiple pours?

I believe the product says to do the second pour around 4 hours. I waited 3 days to do my second pour with a very light sanding of 320 grit and a good cleaning/wipe down before the second pour. The sanding did not gouge the first layer or cause any imperfections. With my second pour I only got about 1/8 of an inch. I think you might have to dam up your project if you're looking for 1/4 inch. Good luck...

Can I pour this into a mold up to 1 1/2" thick at one time?

Yes you can, but be sure you thoroughly mix the two parts together. If you do, you will have no problem. I would add, that if you pour the mix into a mold that is narrow and tall, like the graphite shaft of a golf club (something I did) you will develop noticeable heat which accelerates the cure, you can reduce the hardener to less than 1-1. Also, on thick pours, you will want to watch the mixture for the first hour and use a heat source to eliminate bubbles coming to the surface. Mix thoroughly but mix slowly and smoothly to avoid creating excess bubbles.
