Will the queen base with legs fit inside a full size frame rail with head and foot boards?

I doubt it will. A queen is larger than a full.

Is the platform of the bed, the part the mattress rests on solid or a metal grid? The images from buyers show a metal grid.

Will this work with a pillow top mattress?

It seems like it would. Take a look at the bedding you intend to use. I have the 12” mattress, so it seems probable the fitted sheet might be too small to accommodate a pillow top.
