Yes, the adaptor can be removed. My hubby has a monopod for his camera and I am able to attach this adaptor to his monopod to use with my phone as well. Also, once you remove the adaptor, you can screw in a standard camera as long as it has the universal screw hole under your camera. So this is good for phone and a traditional camera.
