5 year old Turtles Fan Favorite
My 5-year old son recently became obsessed with the Ninja Turtles so this was a no brainer to help him start reading. I loved the 12 step books and so does my son. The first page of each book has sight words and phonics words and sounds that the book concentrates on. My son has gained a lot of confidence and true reading experience with these. I highly recommend and will be looking for other characters

Not the best series but my kids love them for the characters
My sons (ages 3&5) love these books dearly. The way the words are laid out, on a blank page or at least separate from the illustrations, are appropriate for beginning readers or kids that can only identify letters and some words. The front covers are a bit difficult for a new reader to read as the letters of the title are stylized in the “TMNT font” and there is a lot of extra words on the front. I gave a three star rating because the stories do not always make much sense, a common enough affliction for these phonics books. But my kids have been exposed to enough cohesive narratives and rich characters to be annoyed by the storylines. For example, one story has the turtles being chased by droids in the van, but nothing about how they escape. Here is the text of that page and the next: “They get chased on the way. The van shakes! Oh, no! The cake! (Turn the page) The cake is okay! The turtles are safe.” My kids are never satisfied by this and other similar storylines and I end up making up what happens. In other books in the series the storylines are still simple but make sense all the way through. This could have been done better in all 12 books. Also, the illustrations are clearly reused several times - a small thing, I’m sure to keep the cost down. I’m not even sure my kids care. But I’ve seen better beginning reading series and phonics books that retain some integrity of narrative and put full effort into the illustrations; however, I haven’t yet found one for these particular characters. Overall, sufficient for what I purchased them for. I do appreciate that the narratives are tame and not too scary, important for the age range (preschool through kindergarten or 1st grade) at which the reading level is aimed. I also do not like that the letter a used is represented by a non-standard a, not the one taught in most writing books. My kids know that this a represents the sound the standard a makes, but it is unnecessary at this level and could have been fixed by choosing a different font.

Great for reception kids learning to read
These books are very small and thin, with simple stories, but for kids just learning to read they're very helpful. If your child is into TMNT then this set motivates them quite well. My 4 year old in reception uses these books to practice reading each night, and finds them much more engaging than some of the reading schemes from school, because it has his favourite characters in it. It's set out well so you can see which sound each book focuses on - like one focus on the short A sound, like jam, jab etc.. so those words will all get featured, and one will be the short i sound, others are slightly trickier sounds, and then you get a couple that are mixed. These are more specific phonic based than the normal step into reading books, and as mentioned they are smaller, so don't expect it to be quite the same as the other stand alone books, but it is a good set for kids of about 4-5 who are learning

Solid Learning Aid
I bought these for the summer break to keep my little one reading while off from school. We are about 7 books in and she is enjoying them, they have taught her some new words, and she is able to pick up on the words from the previous books as we go along. The stories are short with each page containing a sentence or two. However the bite-sized nature is perfect, as it is easy for my little one to follow and read aloud. She can also get to the end before boredom creeps in. We also bought the Paw Patrol books in the same series, she reaches for the Turtles more however (only 4 books into Paw Patrol). As an aid to sharpen reading skills I recommend these books. To teach a child how to read from scratch however I would admittedly look elsewhere. I use the Turtles and Paw Patrol Phonetics series in addition to what my daughter learns in class, reading her stories with books we have bought or get from the library, and having her read when out and about (signs, etc.). We also purchased the kindergarten activity books with writing and counting exercises which have helped tremendously.
