River Rescue has been the authoritative reference for canoe, kayak, and raft -- from beginner self-rescue to big river teamwork -- since 1985. The 4th edition is bigger and better than ever, with 292 fact-filled pages, 106 illustrations, and 144 photographs. Featured are new photos and first-hand accounts of rescues; expanded material on big-water rescue -- new gear and methods; self-rescue and rescue of others by hand, boat, rope, and other ways; tools and techniques -- rope work, throw bags, boat handling, high- and low-tech gear to use when seconds count; rescue organization -- leadership, teamwork, patient care, evacuation, and more. Review: Vital Stuff to know before you find yourself (or a friend) in need! - Good narratives with good photos of vital info you should be aware of before casually getting on the water... Respect and prepare for the possible risks; treat this info like car insurance! Learn it and hope you do not have a personal need for it! Highly recommend this book! Review: We just started white water training and this is really useful information - I am an "experienced, intermediate level' canoe paddler. My family and I recently completed our basic river training in Ontario, on the Madawaska river, ORCKA, Basic Level 3 certification, and we have begun white water training. The information in this book reiterates/reinforces things I already know, but goes a little further to illustrate rescue techniques I didn't know. Read this book if you are headed for the fun stuff.

Great Overview Book on Whitewater Rescue
I finished a whitewater rescue course, and wanted a book for review. This is an excellent overview book. As good as the book is, it is not a substitute for whitewater rescue instruction.

Great book. If you are going to be on ...
Great book. If you are going to be on rough water you should at least read the parts on self rescue and the rest wouldn't be bad to know either. It's good for a refresher too.

excellent review and some tips I handn' seen before
I have 40 years of kayaking/rafting/canoeing experience and yet I still picked up a few tips from this book. If you paddle whitewater this should be in your library and reviewed from time to time.

Just a new WW paddler needs
This book was recommended by the product manual on my new Astral rescue vest. A real page turner, glad to be reading it before the rescue class in two weeks.
