Is planting it in the ground ok? i live in san diego. thanks. they look gorgeous.

No  that will kill it. They need to be planted only in the moss they come with or peat that has no added fertilizers in it. The moss they come with is actually the best soil for them too.

Question 2

How long can I keep in packing before it starts to die?

Accepted Answer

It needs to be planted, set up according to the care sheet directions, and given strong lighting daily asap. It can survive if left in the box it came in for a while but will be set back and may go dormant from that as well. It might be a good idea to give it as an early Christmas present.

If you cannot give it strong light you can use a red and blue plant LED grow light for the plant. Actual wattage in the teens or 20s should work well for 1 or a few pots of VFTs. There are many for sale on Ebay and Amazon. I recommend buying one with a shorter handling time to make sure it arrives in time for the plant before it is damaged from light deprivation.

Be sure to follow the artificial lighting directions that come with your order for distance from the plants.  The light should be on for 12-14 hours a day March through November and 8 hours a day during the daytime for December through February.
