Astonishing bit of kit for the size and price
Well I bought this just to see if I could upgrade my old TV to a smart TV. I wasn't expecting much at that price. When I saw the size of it I assumed I'd just bought a Wifi receiver/streaming extender that was needed in conjunction another set-top box. So when I powered it up to find a fully fledged operating system (stand-alone device with a ton of apps, streaming services and games) it was then I understood why these have rave reviews. OK - I guess it's not your Amazon fire stick or your Google Chromecast but at that price I don't really care. It still does 95% of what they do as far as streaming all major channels and apps. I'm new to streaming services (other than through my tablet) so was a bit unsure of Roku, as a brand I'd never really heard of. To be honest I'm not a big consumer of streaming services anyway, so just wanted something for the odd movie or catch up on missed episodes. I had a good play around on top of the advertised products I found it supports Spotify, BT Sport, Now TV and Google Photos too... and hundreds more I'd never even heard of. I downloaded the app on my phone and that makes entering details for setting it all up a breeze. It's nice and simple and allows a small amount of customisation (would still like to lock more down from the main home page so meddling kids can't mess) but adequate parental controls. Adding other services was very straight forward as I was already signed up to most major ones anyway. Was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the voice control on the app. It picked up a sports channel dedicated to a certain football club, which I wasn't expecting to even find on there as an app - I was looking for something else but that popped up in the results as a bonus. My only criticism - and this probably applies to all these types of devices... is I'd like to be able to filter out anything from a certain provider (I'll never use Apple TV so would prefer it not to come up in results) or where it isn't available... what is the point in following something which isn't available to watch?? In short - does exactly what I wanted. Small, low powered and done everything very well with no glitches. If I have one minor criticism it's that the time switching between service could be a tad faster... it's not slow, but it's certainly not instant either. But hey...for that price!!??

Perfect for updating an older TV without ask the extras you don't need
I got the Roku Express last week and I'm really pleased with it. It's for a slightly older TV (non-smart, 1080p) and we don't care at all about 4K, voice search, Alexa integration or other features bundled with most streaming devices. The Roku Express is the perfect solution to add streaming functionality to an older TV, especially if you don't want any other features. It was really easy to set up. It comes with two AAA batteries for the remote, a USB charging cable and short HDMI cable, the Roku box, and an adhesive pad you can use to fix the box to the TV if you want. Once it's connected to the WiFi, the rest of the setup is done via the Roku website. Roku does ask for your payment details during setup (so you can easily rent films, etc), but you can bypass this if you don't want to, just search about it online. Performance is excellent, the UI is really snappy and responsive, and streaming starts very quickly once you've selected a show. We had a Fire TV Stick previously, but that had become really slow and would often crash, or stop to buffer. None of those issues have come up on the Roku. I was a bit worried that the infrared remote might be inconsistent (Bluetooth remote is only on the more expensive Roku models), but it works perfectly. BBC iPlayer and Netflix are the main apps I use, but it has an absolutely enormous library of channels with all sorts of content. The Search function is excellent; you can search for a film or TV show and Roku will show you which services have it available, and their prices for it. It's easy to add channels (apps) to the homepage, and to customise the layout to your liking. Would thoroughly recommend the Roku, it does everything I could want it to, and it does it well, all at a great price.

Suburb value basic streamer.
Brilliant. I bought this on an offer of <£14, what a bargain. The picture quality is really excellent. The speed of response to the remote control is fast, the UI (User Interface) is basic and simple. I have linked it up with Amazon Echo (Alexa) and it works, sort of. The only issue I had was the Roku App which provides an alternative remote control with onscreen (mobile) keyboard and headphone ability, I found it unreliable and it ended up not recognising my Roku express, but, it did find my two NOW TV boxes (which were made for NOW TV by Roku), the only difference I found was that the NOW TV boxes were connected via ethernet using my Devolo Powerline system. The Roku Express does not have an ethernet connection or the software to add an external ethernet adaptor. The simple answer I found was to reconnect the Roku Express's WiFi to my Devolo WiFi (instead of directly to my router's WiFi), this means that the Roku ends up appearing to my main Router as effectively an ethernet connection. Once I did this, everything with the Roku App worked with no issues. I also got an immense leap in WiFi connection speed as the Devolo WiFi adaptor was in the same room as my Roku Express. Success.

Great value, so compact and easy to use!
My wife and I used a Roku stick, in our bedroom TV, which had been advertised as Smart, but turned out to be picky, with apps, as well! Didn’t like Amazon. The stick worked for years, but recently, thanks to those soooo helpful updates, it no longer picked up Amazon Prime - and my wife was pissed, let me tell you, as she was nearly through the latest scene of “Mrs Maisel”, when it dropped! Honestly, it still picked up Disney+ and Netflix, so what’s the issue with Amazon?? Regardless, I had a quick look, online, and saw the Roku player. It looked ideal, good value and we would already know how to work it. I ordered it as a surprise and it was here - in the blimmin Shetland Islands, 200 miles from the nearest Scottish coastline!- within 36 hours! How Amazon do it, I’ll never know. Fairy enslavement? I set it up in seconds (literally), and it’s TINY. It’s actually only as long as the USB stick, and a teeny little thicker, so manages to sit entirely unnoticed, beneath the TV. I removed the now Amazonless stick and left her to discover it. Boyoboy! Brownie points for me. She is hap-hap-happy again, and has now moved on to another series, also on Amazon. This is just the business! Hopefully it will be a while before updates force us to buy something else! Please, Amazon? Shake hands and make friends with Roku again - you kids go on out and play nice, together, yeah? *Perfect* and great value for money.

Makes a dumb TV smart!
We had an old 32 inch HD LG TV knocking around that we wanted to turn into a Netflix player for the kitchen. This little Roku has met the requirement perfectly. We're in the UK. 1. It's a little pebble of a thing that sits either under or on top of your telly. Comes with a 3M command adhesive pad, so you can stick it onto the TV without hassle if you need to remove it. 2. It comes with an HDMI cable and a USB cable for power. I was very pleased when I discovered my telly had a USB port on the back that provides enough juice to power the Roku. If that wasn't there you'd just need a USB plug adapter. 3. The remote is a sweet little thing with good tactile response and excellent range. It's infrared, not Bluetooth. 4. I was pleased with the ease of setup. It was simple to set up my streaming services, which included Netflix, Amazon Prime video, NOWTV, All 4, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Spotify and a load more. People on here moaning about being geoblocked on other channels are being ridiculous, you can't expect Roku to break geographic supplier contracts. For 18 GBP this thing is great value for money. 5. The GUI is responsive and well thought out. The CPU is clearly up to handling the various streaming service interfaces. 6. The Wi-Fi connection is good and the ability to control the unit via your phone with the free Roku app is nifty. The only thing that annoys me about the Roku is an irritating high pitched hum or drone that comes through the TV speakers when using the menu system. The noise disappears the moment video starts playing, so the problem isn't a deal breaker. It's just an irritating bug and I wonder why Roku haven't noticed it - my Google searches show other people experiencing the same noise. In summary, this is well worth getting if you want to drag a dumb old TV into the streaming age.

The most amazing device I ever purchased
The Roku Express has turned out to be one of the most amazing devices I have ever purchased and at such a low cost. A tiny thing about the size of a box of matches, with a dandy remote control, powered by plugging it in to the USB socket on my TV with a lead also supplied! The set up process is relatively straightforward and will, more than likely, require access to a computer connected to the internet, so have that handy and ready to go when using your Roku device for the very first time. I use a D-Link DWR-921 4G router with a SMARTY SIM to connect wirelessly with the Roku and stream HD television the visual and auditory quality of which are on a par with conventionally delivered content using an arial as far as I can see. There are not too many interruptions made by advertisements which generate generate the revenue needed to keep the free channels I watch costless although you can, if you wish, get paid content via the subscription services like Netflix and Apple TV etc., with the Roku if you can afford them and want them. As I say I only use the Roku to access free channels and was surprised to discover just how much fantastic material is available for nothing to enjoy, both real-time and on-demand. For example the free Pluto TV channel is actually showing Star Trek:Discovery Season Four - the latest season! - on its SciFi channel, in the UK and Europe now, before anybody else (as far as I know) after Netflix recently lost the rights to broadcast the series in European countries. A truly lovely Christmas treat for scifi aficionados like me! What an incredible little gem of 21st century electronics the Roku Express has turned out to be both to catch up with things that I missed and to enjoy incredible contemporary entertainments available to me gratis.

Ideal for kids
Before I start - this is a review after 24 hours of ownership so my initial thoughts only. Bought for my 12 year old son - to allow him to watch age appropriate TV in his room. Chose the Roku over a Fire TV stick for a few main reasons. Firstly it wasn't tied to my Amazon account - so could stop access to Prime TV, secondly I can chose what channels (apps) are available to him on the device and pin lock the installation of other apps (and purchases) and thirdly I can add parental controls for the installed Roku TV channel to ensure he gets to see PG and below rated content and all other content is pin protected, The setup of the Roku is simple and completed via web browser rather than using the D-Pad on the remote - this makes it simple and intuitive. There is a raft of content available - though I stuck to Disney+ and Netflix and a couple of audio channels. You can also add more content from the web interface if needed. I would recommend testing the pin restrictions properly before handing it over though as I made a couple of rookie mistakes which would have allowed him to buy content without a pin in the first instance... make sure you save changes!! Overall though - the interface, simplicity, content and picture quality are all great

Works great!
Happy I bought this Roku streaming device. Makes it so much easier to be able to watch Netflix, Disney etc. on my big screen regular LED TV and not just through my computer. Doesn't cost anything if you already are paying for your Netflix etc. Only costs additional money, if you want to add the channels that Roku has to offer. However, Roku also has a lot of free channels to watch if you want.
