Gearing up for roasting beans we go through 5#/month. Is a cooler necessary? Any Roaster recommendations?

I've been home roasting for 3 years; a year and a half with a bean cooler.  The bean cooler combines chaff removal and cooling in an efficient way that changed the game for me.  Previous method involved spreading hot beans onto a cold metal pan followed by lots of agitating between colanders to loosen the remaining chaff.

For a starting roaster, I would recommend the Fresh Roast 800 Series if it's still available but that will be a lot of roasting to maintain 5#/mo.  I get about 6.5 oz roasted per batch using an extended chamber / 15 min start to finish (setup/cleanup), medium roast.  You must be able to plug the roaster directly into a dedicated outlet without using an extension cord or competing for power with other devices on the circuit for best results.

For a lower financial commitment, I've also had great results using a steel wok (or whirly pop) on an open flame burner though it involved more time and elbow grease with constant stirring.  I wasn't weighing the beans at the time but I could get about 2 cups green in my Wok which I remember easily filling a quart Mason jar when roasted - approx 1 lb.  This was before the cooling tray so my batches were double-roasted to do colander-method chaff removal at the halfway point but I achieved some really nice results.  Probably a 45+ min commitment per batch but it is a labor of love!  Best of luck and enjoy!

I think you could fit 500g (weighed pre-roast) in the cooler but it would be tight.
