Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit X Multi Tool, 24 Functions & Leather Pouch

I bought my first one about 10 years ago to step away from my Leatherman Wave. I've used it daily for at least 80% of that time, even if just once to adjust a screw or pop open a beer. I finally snapped the thin flathead bit off while I was working on my car and I ordered a replacement the same evening. It is that good. Multitool choice is very personal, and this one serves my needs in spades. It's a toolbox on my hip. The build quality is just as good as the one it replaced. My original has had a hard life, and I tried my best to respect that it is a multitool and not abuse it, and as a result it lasted me a decade. I will include some milage differance pictures. Rest assured, the old one got plenty of use. The pliers are the star, next to the philips head driver, and wide flathead/prybar. The shape of the grip when it is open makes using the pliers a treat. My old Leatherman Wave would pinch if the jaws slipped and I was tired of the blood blisters and punishment of using them which is how I discovered this tool in the first place. Back in circa 2015 I paid $100 for my Swiss tool Spirit, and $115 doesn't seem bad at all. For a decade of dependable near daily use is a phenomenal value. The tool lockup is perfect and comparing my old one with the new one is shocking. The old one opens to pliers better but everything else is near identical. It will hold up if you treat it right. The cons are the knife and pouch... The knife being stainless is easy to dull depending on what you're cutting. My Victorinox chef knife is phenomenal, however I found keeping this sharp as I like was difficult. Easy to sharpen however. I carry a dedicated knife for my cutting tasks and use this one for more unsavory tasks as a result. The pouch is closed via hook and loop which I have always worn out within a year. I would LOVE for Victorinox to simply adapt a brass snap. I actually carried my Swiss tool in my old Leatherman pouch for this exact reason. I have not ever had it fall out, fortunately, but I like positive retention. If you can get your hands on it I know it before you buy you will very likely get one for yourself. If it is your first multitool you will be spoiled. The build quality is outstanding and outclasses other multitools in spades. It is so good I bought it again twice. (I am sending the broken one to Victorinox for warranty)

This is singularly the best multi-tool I've ever owned and I've owned many. Do I carry it with me every day? No. I carry a little leatherman squirt every day.... it has most of the same tools just 1/4 the size and weight and I can keep it on my key chain... every time one breaks I just mail it back to leatherman and they send me a new one for no cost, so no problem there ( I think I'm on my 4th). However, I do carry the spirit x every time I go fishing or camping... and I go fishing about every other week and camping (pre-covid at least) a few times a year. The pliers are excellent, the scissors work, the knife is usable enough (in a swiss army knife sort of way), it's easy to sharpen, it's comfortable to hold, the wire cutters work, the screwdriver is the right size and all the tools have held up well for over 7 years.... but none of those are the reasons that make this Victorinox my favorite (regular sized) pocket tool of all time. This tool is the best for me for one reason and one reason alone: Rust. I live in Florida. I fish on the ocean. If you're out on a boat, it's incredibly handy to have a multi-tool... so you don't have to run all over the place looking for a specific tool. I'm constantly cutting line, bending and cutting wire, taking hooks out of fishes' mouths... doing minor boat repairs, (tightening screws, prying stuff open,etc.)... I'm sure all the other multi-tools from major brands at roughly this price point are just fine if you wash them off the second you get home. However, I've got a lot of stuff to do when I get home (clean fish, etc.). So sometimes I clean all my tools properly, sometimes I don't. As a result of 20 years of fishing on the ocean in my own boat, I can say that I've destroyed leatherman waves, and Gerbers (I forget all the names), and loads of others by accidentally allowing them to rust out... this is the only tool that I know of that's mostly impervious to the elements and still gets every job done that I need it to. It's rusted a little before, after a particularly wet fishing trip (4ft seas) and a few days left to its own devices to stew in salt spray (I forgot about it), but a little bit of elbow grease and the little rust spots come right off and it still looks practically brand new. From what I understand it's because of the incredibly high degree of polish. If you work in a factory or on cars or something and you need a big hefty multi-tool, there are probably better options. If you're really into advanced cool-looking razor-sharp knife blades on a multi-tool, leatherman wave/charge is definitely better. If you live anywhere that's humid and near the sea, I sincerely doubt you can find a better more practical tool than the spirit x. After all, I don't spend hours cutting stuff with a multi-tool and I don't know anybody who does. You don't need a S-30V steel to cut open plastic bags and make Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches or to cut fishing line. Who wants to clean fish with a pocket knife? Seriously, I've got filet knives for that. The only thing I think I would probably change on this knife would be to create a version with needle-nose pliers and a more typical lanyard ring. Lanyard rings are useful for fishing because they give you a place to tighten knots by putting the hook on them and synching them down. You can do it on this, it's just the lanyard hole is in kind of a weird place and not as easy or as fast as on the leatherman. So, I would gladly trade out the chisel on this for the leatherman lanyard ring. To be fair, I've never tried the leatherman charge tti to check it for rust resistance, that's the titanium one, and ($160 seems a bit steep)... and I'm not sure I ever will... the spirit x hasn't failed yet... and again it works perfectly. The swiss army knife-like blade is fine for how I use it... I might have been better off with the clipped point version, but I haven't dropped it on my foot yet. So, still winning!

So in my seemingly never-ending quest to find the perfect pocket knife and multitool, I purchased this Swiss tool after much debate. I watched many other reviews and while I initially thought the MX clip version would be nice. I ultimately purchased this one seeing as the price on sale at $119 was an absolute steal. I’ve carried Swiss Army knives for years, going all the way back to my days in the scouts, but in the past few years, I have found the need to have pliers handy, mostly due to the nature of my job and carrying a separate set of pliers, as well as a knife and the other tools just seemed a bit too much. Now I have a few Leatherman‘s as well and while I do like the Leatherman’s, I’ve always been drawn to the quality and the aesthetics of Swiss Army products. This tool it has everything that I could possibly need minus replaceable bits, which is not strictly necessary, but is a nice addition that Leatherman has on their multi tools. For all the tasks that I need a tool for on a daily basis this one fulfills all of them quite well. I really am not too bothered by the lack of replaceable wire cutters as that is one of the few things that I don’t actually do on a daily basis. The plier head, however, is very strong and the tips are quite fine which still allow for some precision work and the more standard plier area works well for gripping onto small nuts and bolts that I have to loose and tighten throughout the day on my machinery. The knife is what you would expect from Swiss Army. It cuts very well and while it doesn’t hold an edge forever, it is incredibly easy to bring back with a few passes on the ceramic rod or on a strop. The scissors as usual are quite wonderful although I do think the ones on the standard Swiss army knives work just a tad bit better. Right out of the box the tool is very easy to operate and I love how easy it is to actuate the pliers as they pretty much move freely right out of the package. The locking mechanism for the tools is very easy to use one handed. Some of the tools when I first purchased it we’re a little stiff opening up, but after a month or so they easily pull out without pulling their neighbors along with them. This is quite the shiny tool, but it is easy to clean and easy to maintain. The flathead and Phillips drivers work very well. Now I don’t have much use for a bottle opener or a can opener day today, but having used them in the past on other Swiss Army knives I have no doubt that if and when the situation arises, they will work quite well. I think this is an absolutely wonderful multitool that will accomplish most tasks just fine. I’ve not done anything. extremely ridiculous with this tool such as hard use prying as in those cases I would feel more comfortable, using a dedicated prybar for that. The fit and finish as usual are fantastic from anything from this company. They included sheath is leather and is very nice. However, I do wish that it had a button instead of the Velcro just as I can see the Velcro wearing out a lot quicker, especially as I take the tool in and out of the pouch several times throughout the day. The other advantage to this is that it is not an overly heavy tool so I really don’t feel it on my hip. I I have debated purchasing the pocket clip, and I may do that in the future however, I generally carry this tool during the week for work purposes, and when I’m not working, it typically sits in its pouch in my man bag, as I typically carry a pocket knife and away a Swiss Army knife in my actual pocket. Now it has a lifetime warranty, although I don’t know that I would want to test that seeing as their warranty is not quite as forgiving as Leathermans. In comparison to Leatherman I would say that overall this is a nicer tool that is more ergonomic in the hand however, I will say that Leatherman does have a wider variety of tools and I would have to say a better selection of tools available. Most of that comes down to what you can do with the replaceable bits and it’s adapters and general and the replaceable wire cutters if that’s something that you use more often than not. I find myself alternating between this and some of my Leatherman tools throughout the week so as usual, I still don’t think I found the perfect one and much like my pocketknives. I tend to just rotate through them. You really cannot go wrong with this tool, especially if you can find it on sale.

I've had this tool for 6 years and use it almost daily. You'll laugh to hear all I use it for (and when I make sure I'm not carrying it). First off it's important to say that every tool included is useful, plus the tool handle is comfortable to hold for serious work. I've tried others including my son's Leatherman, but this one is the best by far. As my review title says, I'm old, and am a lot less sturdy than this tool. When I see something that needs doing when I'm outside, I do not want to have to go back into the house, barn or garage to retrieve the proper full sized tool if I can avoid it, and even in the house this tool has saved me countless steps. It remains easy to open and refold, the tools come out, lock in place, and tuck away perfectly, the knife holds its edge well, and all other included tools are still doing their jobs well. If I'm out stacking wood and find some vines in the way, the wire cutters cut most of them just as they cut wire for my fence and gardening work. I've used the saw to cut wayward branches and even small saplings. I've filed a broken fingernail as well as a metal burr. The little scissors cut a hangnail, paper, fabric, ribbon or tape to name a few uses. The multi-blade is my box cutter for opening delivered packages. The screwdrivers are all functional and the handle of the tool offers a sturdy grip for especially tight screws I'm trying to unfasten. The knife is strong and fills all the needs I've used it for and while it's stayed sharp well over time, I sharpened it when I did my kitchen knives and it's got a great edge. I wear sneakers around the farm and have elastic laces in them to make getting them on easier, but often the tongue gets scrunched down when I put them on. I use the pliers to pull it back out :). Works great. They are also good for loosening and tightening nuts as well as gripping other things. I wouldn't be without this thing in my pocket, but it's heavy, so when I go to the doctor where they always weigh me I have to remember to take it out before getting on the scale. And the airline people take a really dim view of the tool so I have to remember to put it in my carryon, and have even put it in my checked bag to avoid problems. Bottom line, this thing has saved the day multiple times as well as saving me many steps, whether I'm opening an Amazon box or taking apart my weed sprayer for repair, as I did yesterday. It's expensive but worth every cent.

The build of this tool is top-notch! The smooth finish is awesome. When you feel it with your hands, it's amazing how good it feels. The chassis construction is above what I think anyone else has. The individual tools are very high quality, too. Some of the tools are a bit thicker than others, which is OK with me because they took the time to figure that some of them should have a heavier shank. For example, the pry tool has a massive spine, thus giving the user the feeling that it won't break under stress. The longer Phillips screwdriver is much better than any other tool I've seen. -- you can actually get it in longer places, whereas others are just not long enough.Both the file and saw have a thick spine as well. The file has two degrees of roughness, whereas the front of the shank has a tooling that will cut like a hacksaw. The saw tool is very sharp and will cut thru most anything you need to cut. The can opener is not like most other tools I've seen. This one has a pretty sharp edge to cut thru cans with ease -- I've used it! The knife is very sharp and very strong and I don't see any issues with it. The scissors are...well, much better than I initially thought. They cut, and cut very well. They are a bit small, but I have cut thru some very thick cardboard just to see what it can't do...and it can do it all. One of the coolest and useful tools I found is the chisel/wire stripper/box cutter thing -- way to go on that triple-tool! The locking mechanisms are very good and this tool is just the finest piece of work I've ever seen. There are two issues I would like to point out to Victorinox: 1) The scissors are very good, but could you possibly make the opening just a bit longer? Find some way of doing it, cuz I'm sure other users probably agree. 2) The hole punch thing is very nice and strong, but for the love of God, please put a hole in it...somewhere! I could attempt to drill a hole myself, but I'm pretty sure that no matter how I try, I won't be able to drill thru this monster steel. Summary: If you are looking for a new multi-tool, this one is 99.98% awesome!

I love this tool. I volunteer as a technical director for a community theater and also manage the scene shop. I bought this to have a knife and pliers in pocket when I'm building or installing sets or whatnot. I carry it everywhere, though because it is so useful. I even try to leave it in my pocket when I am at home. I carry it to my actual job as a college professor. I most often use the knife and scissors. I've had pocket knives with scissors before and they always were terrible: these scissors are well designed. The pliers are handy for the random small nail or staple I encounter all the time in our scene shop, or pulling out a staple from papers at work. The saw and file work really well too for light projects. A bottle opener is useful at a barbecue. There are so many times that it's handy to have that I can't remember them all here. I don't use the sheath. It's nice, I just prefer to keep it in my pocket. On some of my jeans it fits well in the small fifth pocket. I wasn't sure I'd like the smooth bright metal finish but it is beautiful and fits well in my hand. The only downside is that I can't instantly open the knife. It takes two hands and the sides of the tool feel identical in my hand, so I often open the scissors by mistake. To me, that is a very minor issue. I'm planning to file a groove on one side so I can open the knife by feel. Definitely worth the investment!

I haven’t had my Spirit X very long but so far I’m happy with it. I spent a lot of time looking for a tool with the right combination of blades. With Leatherman, SOG, Gerber, etc. to get what I wanted I also had to take blades I had no use for, which often meant the biggest and heaviest models. This one, though, is a good fit for me. To run the tool through its paces I’ve found opportunities to use all of the blades and pliers and have not been unhappy with any of them. Sure, the scissors could open wider, so could the pliers, but I haven’t found anything I thought I should be able to do, but couldn’t. The best features: - All of the blades are accessible without having to open the tool. - All of the blades open easily. Maybe I’ve just had bad luck, but it seems every pocket knife and multi-tool I’ve owned always had at least one blade that was very difficult to open, especially when new. This includes my Swiss Army knives. - All of the blades lock when open. This is huge, what a great safety feature! And unlocking them is quick and easy. - Everything is tight; it feels solid no matter which tool you are using. Things I don’t like as much: - The shiny, polished stainless sure is pretty but it’s also slick, especially if your hands are sweaty. I would happily trade the gleaming finish for some texture. - Although the blades open smoothly, the tiny nail nicks could be a problem for some people, and they are impossible to use with gloves. - I would like at least the knife blade to have a one-handed opening slot. - It needs a real lanyard ring. It says in the instructions you can use the hole for the optional corkscrew to attach a lanyard, but that’s not a good solution because it attaches on the side of the tool, not the end where it should. For me, the plusses far outweigh the negatives. I’m very pleased with my purchase.

I received exactly what I ordered. The sticker victorinox put on the end of the box said "53814" and "ST SPIRIT X PT". A little research on Sakwiki showed "53814 US Model: - Spirit "X" Spear-point blade replaces serrated blade". It came with the very nice looking brown leather sheath in the box. I had done my homework reading lots of info on the different models and this is exactly the one I wanted. I was very slow getting onto the idea of a pliers based multitool, I'm a loyal Swiss Army Knife fan for 30 years and just didn't think I'd like them, besides they're expensive. I felt like I was cheating on my faithful companion Victorinox, when I picked up a Leatherman Wingman last year that was 1/2 price but quickly found that I liked the piers of it! The wingman sold me on the idea but the quality of it's other tools while useful, just didn't seen to be up to the quality of the tools on my Victorinox Champion Plus. So when I was able to catch this Victorinox Spirit X at a lower price I hit the order button! I am not disappointed at all! Pros; All the blades are opened from the outside. The pliers are solid, no side to side wobbly feel like on my Wingman. The knife blade came sharp, but a minute or to on my fine Arkansas stone and it will cleanly cut strips off the edge of a sheet of copying machine paper! The scissors are different from the ones on my knife, but Victorinox quality is obvious. They work perfectly! Cons; There ain't any, it's a Victorinox! So it's now in my edc bag. My wingman is going to my 72 hour emergency bug out bag. This old dog learned a new trick! Years ago a old man advised me "save your money and buy what you want". If you're wanting a multitool, this is the one to save for!

Ho una Leatherman Wave da circa 5 anni, che porto sempre con me ma uso saltuariamente, diciamo un paio di volte alla settimana. Niente da dire come funzioni, ottimo prodotto, ma poco a poco sta facendo la ruggine, si sta ossidando (macchie scure quasi scavate) e alcuni inserti faticano ad uscire. Inoltre il filo della lama è rovinato (micro rotture, mai usato per tagliare cose dure, naturalmente). Ho un'altra Leatherman, non ricordo il modello, in macchina, e la uso un paio di volte all'anno: stessa cosa, sta arrugginendo e diventando dura. Un mio amico ha questa Victorinox, fa l'elettricista e la usa tutti i giorni più volte al giorno, da anni. La pinza non ha un graffio o un filo di ruggine, sembra ancora nuova!!! Dopo averla presa anch'io l'ho confrontata con la Wave, e devo dire che siamo li, una vince da una parte una dall'altra, però come funzionalità si equivalgono. Ma i materiali della Victorinox sono un altro mondo, l'acciaio è totalmente superiore. Unico neo la finitura a specchio, è scivolosa. Io avrei fatto il manico con micro zigrinatura, come tutti gli strumenti di lavoro professionali in acciaio. Vi consiglio, se la usate per lavoro, di prendere anche il set di bits con l'adattatore, avrete una piccola officina in tasca. La pinza ha la punta arrotondata e assottigliata, e quindi è comodissima anche per lavori su parti piccole. Utilissimo il fatto che tutti gli utensili contenuti siano saldamente bloccati, e si chiudano solo azionando l'apposito fermo di sicurezza. In questo modo è impossibile farsi male. E si può usare anche con uno dei due manici aperto, in modo da avere una sorta di prolunga che permette di raggiungere punti difficili. Aggiornamento del 8 gennaio 2014. Durante le vacanze di Natale ho avuto modo di stressarla al massimo. Ho tagliato grossi fili di ferro (quelli che tengono i pali di cemento dei filari di vigne, spessi a occhio 3 mm), smontare mezzo scooter di mia figlia, smontare e rimontare una pompa ad immersione industriale. La pinza ha fatto ottimamente il suo lavoro, senza riportare un graffio o un cedimento. Unica "mancanza" un cacciavite Phillips più grande sarebbe stato utilissimo. Ho risolto usando un bit USAG comprato per l'occasione, che si adatta perfettamente al porta bit opzionale Victorinox. Ad oggi, luglio 2019, dopo 6 anni di utilizzo quasi quotidiano, anche per lavori pesanti come smontare parti della moto, è perfetta. Quando è sporca la lavo con acqua calda e sapone, l'asciugo col compressore, una goccia d'olio nei punti di snodo e torna come nuova. La ricomprerei? Si, cento volte. Non è una spesa, è un investimento. Prima di aprire la cassetta degli attrezzi tiro fuori lei, e il più delle volte mi basta!!!

This is an Extremely well built multi tool. I have two other Victorinox SAK's that I have carried and used for decades: the first is an Alox Electrician that I bought back in the late 70's and the other is the Alox Farmer that replaced the Electrician as my EDC, about ten years ago, because of the saw feature that it offered. Both of my SAK's still function as well as the first day that I bought them and I continue to own and use them to this day. My impressions of the Swiss Tool Spirit X from the last three days is that it is of the same pedigree as my SAK's, if not better. ( EDIT: Sept 24/25. What I claimed to be a SAK Electrician is actually a SAK Pioneer - the "Progenitor" of numerous other SAK's, most notably the SAK Soldier and others such as the Electrician and the Farmer etc... etc. Bottom line is: a damned good knife is still a damned good knife regardless of how it's labelled. As you can tell from the photograph, I have dragged this particular SAK all over God's creation for decades and guess what? It's still a damned good knife. ) The Swiss Tool Spirit X is very well thought out, very well designed and extremely well built Multi-tool and I am so very happy that I changed my choice to the Spirit X. Originally, I was set upon acquiring a Leatherman Wave + as I currently have the Leatherman Surge and all of its accessories that I have can be migrated over to the Wave +. However, my recent experiences with Leatherman Customer Services had led me to re-access my choices. I could not bring myself to buy another Leatherman product and continue to support a company that clearly does not want my support. But, in all fairness, I must really thank Leatherman Customer Services for inspiring me to research the alternatives, which led me to my purchase of the Victorinox Swiss Tool Spirit X - a much more refined and much better designed product that comes with a lifetime guarantee. I've been using Victorinox products for 45 plus years now and I've never had a problem with any of them - I cannot say the same for my Leatherman products.
