Easy to use, does the job
Review from a non expert here. Difficult to know which to buy if you don't know anyone who knows about these things. This was my fourth one of these and mostly great. One of them stopped working with the motor going after a few years so I would always have backup copies and probably replace every few years. That being said, I've just purchased 2 more

Embraced with hope, and pure delight.
Fourteen years, a weary friend, Faithful service, near its end. A WD My Book, 4TB, Mac bound, In distant 2015, its service found. A fond farewell, a decade's stay, You never faltered, day by day. An ageing soul, confined and weak, By stroke and cancer, life you seek. And near, a soul, with fear rife, Of every germ, in shadowed life. Unbending will, fragile and slow, Worn and flawed, where swiftness should flow. You bore our burdens, what we asked, Through shadowed plague, a solemn task. Through dread diagnosis, surgeon's steel, To emergency's door, our hearts did reel. These hours, both finest and most cruel, We bow to service, honour's jewel. Remembering days of years gone by, You depart with grace, beneath the sky. A Mac Mini waits, to take your role, A WD My Passport, 5TB, whole. New household member, swift and bright, Embraced with hope, and pure delight. Expectations rise, on shoulders new, We trust the splendid paths you'll strew. Adaptable, steadfast, swift to fly, Splendid in all, for you and I. The germaphobe yearns for gifts untold, May years be long, your bounty bold. For years we knew, a heart so true, Bearing the system's weight anew. High Sierra's realm, since seventeen, It never failed, a loyal scene. Four thousand to five, a voice so clear, Both sang with praise, banishing fear. Yet whispers tell of drives that wane, In weeks of work, a bitter pain. The first retired, still shines so bright, When bodies falter, losing light. For those whose flesh begins to fail, How precious these, beyond the pale. How dear the cost, relief so sweet, Five thousand bytes, perfectly complete.

Great when it's sorted, but for me it was not 'Time Machine Ready' out of the box
The product itself is excellent, but I had substantial issues getting it to work correctly. In my experience (others may find differently) it was not Time Machine Ready out of the box and required a significant amount of research and experimentation to get it to work. When first connected it backed up 2 or 3 times, then said 'back-up failed'. Googling and experimentation ensued. I downloaded the more comprehensive WD Utilities software and used it to ensure the sleep function was not the cause of the failure. It would then back up once after restarting, and the next backup would fail as the first one still said 'in progress'. Restarting meant it would again back up once, then fail the second time. Further Googling found instructions posted by someone allegedly from Apple Support to use Apple's First Aid function after restarting the computer in Recovery Mode, the object of which was to ensure both drives were in the same state, and fix minor issues in one or other of the drives. The drive was then deleted. I did this twice as it did not work the first time, and the second time I did all the drives on my computer including the WD backup. The problem notification changed to something else, I forget the exact wording, but it still failed after the first backup. Then yet more Googling suggested removing all the WD Utilities (which I downloaded separately as part of problem-solving) and WD Discovery (came pre-installed) software. I searched my hard drive and deleted all WD software. Then restarted the laptop and it backed up flawlessly. It has functioned perfectly ever since, backing up as regular as clockwork. As I said, it's working great now, but it took more than two weeks to sort. I contacted Amazon support and they promptly offered to replace it (great service from Amazon), and that was the point at which I got it working. All in all it is fine now, but the key issue for me is it says 'Time Machine ready' (which is why I bought it) meaning in my book it should be plug and play. In my experience it was not. Still, a happy ending overall. EDIT: after a further two months of working flawlessly the problem returned. I returned it and got a refund.

Compact 4 Tb external hard drive
Compact external hard drive. I bought version set up for iMac. Pretty well plug and play. I use it as Time machine for backup of data on my Mac. It took a bit of time to get this going but probably my fault!

Great Little External Drive
Truly plug and play with my MacBook Pro. I have managed to almost fill the 1TB SSD that came in my MacBookPro. I take a lot of photographs and they are resource hungry. I have offloaded my entire Photo library to the 5TB WD drive with no problem. It is tiny and will now travel in my camera bag with the MacBook without taking aup very much space o adding to the weight.

Failed after 8 months
So disappointed with this and the customer service. Firstly I had to replace the cable within 3 months of buying this item, then 8 months in and with only 1TB of usage the entire drive has crashed. Contacted the support and they said it was likely the cable.....what again? Supposedly sending a new one but been waiting over a week now and still nothing. All my work that I sell is on the disk, I am losing sales and my reputation is being wrecked and they don't seem to even care! I hope nobody else has to go through this. I don't usually post negative reviews and maybe I just got unlucky but I would expect the support to be much better.

A marvel of engineering at a great value price
Password protected and huge capacity in something the size of my phone. Fantastic buy at a great price. The instructions for setting up are not written clearly but eventually I got the password set up just fine.

Quality buy, value for money.
A well trusted brand. Easy setup and use, with useful features like password protection. Quality build, though slightly on heavy side for the 5TB Mac version.

Qualité WD
Rien à redire sur ce DD WD, comme à chaque fois. Je ne suis jamais déçu avec WD et je n’achète que cette marque, depuis plus de 15 ans.
