10 months of cloth diapering experience
After extensive research and even a class on cloth diapering at the local birth center, I settled on the Grovia system and have not regretted that decision. My son is now 12 months and we have been using Grovia since about 8 weeks. We have lots of cloth diapering friends so I have had the chance to see lots of cloth diapers in action and I am very glad that I invested in grovia to begin with. Here are the products we use, why we like them and (in some cases) how they could be improved. There is a lot of material covered in this review. I am doing it this way because I wish there had been something comprehensive like this on Amazon when I was shopping for my diaper stuff! If you are considering buying a Grovia system, this will be helpful for you. If you are looking for a comprehensive review on just one item, other reviews may be more suitable. Our total system consists of the following: Essentials; *15 All In One shells in a variety of prints and solids = 6 velcro and 9 snap GroVia All-In-One (AIO) Cloth Diaper - Planes *36 organic inserts GroVia Certified Organic Cotton Soaker Pad 2 Pack *Magic Stick diaper ointment Magic Stick All Natural Diaper Ointment, Clear, Net Wt. 2 oz. *Brabantia Pedal Bin Pedal Bin, 30 Litre (White) (25.98"H x 11.54"W x 15.55"D) *36 Grovia Wipes GroVia Cotton Cloth Wipes, 12 count *Diaper Detergent Tiny Bubbles Detergent, Net Wt. 60 oz., Yellow Box Non-essentials, we use these items for convenience, *Diaper scraper Make My Day Two Birds Silicone Spatula and Scraper Set, Black *Diaper sprayer bumGenius Diaper Sprayer *Wipe Warmer (perfectly fits grovia wipes) Prince Lionheart Premium Wipe Warmer *2 waterproof changing pad covers Carters Keep Me Dry Flannel Bassinet Pad, Ecru *24 washcloths (for top layer of changing pad)Martex Hospitality Washcloths - 24-Pack (White) *1 little pottyBABYBJรRN Little Potty - White *Disposable Biodegradable diapers for backup and travel Broody Chick 100% Natural Fully Compostable Diapers Jumbo Box (Junior 26.5 - 55.1 lbs. There was quite a bit of trial and error and research that went into the above system. I have only listed the items that work beautifully and will simplify your cloth diapering efforts. I will jump right in with some gripes. Cloth diapering is not cheap and despite industry claims, I have not realized cost savings in the first year (as compared to buying premium disposable diapers at Costco). When you add up the cost of the diapers and accessories, the cost of your time doing all those extra loads of laundry (or paying a diaper service), the cost of the resources to wash and dry all those loads, and the cost of all the special "cloth friendly" accoutrements necessary to care for the diapers without ruining them, it really adds up. If you are going to use the system for more than once child, then you will realize some significant savings (be sure to buy gender-neutral covers if that is your intention). The bigger motivation to cloth diaper (at least for me) is the dramatically reduced environmental impact and health benefits of cloth diapering. Conventional disposable diapers are loaded with toxins that pollute the earth, the workers that produce them and of course, your baby. Not to mention that it takes over 500 years for regular disposables to break down in the environment. That means that your babies dirty diapers will still be polluting the earth when your great, great, great, great grandchildren are born. Talk about a crappy legacy to leave behind! Now the good stuff. I chose Grovia because of the convenience and simplicity of the whole system. I knew that if I was going to cloth diaper, it would need to be as simple and easy as possible, even if that meant I would pay a bit more up front. There is a massive amount of information about cloth diapering on the net and much of it is overly complicated. Cloth diapering does not have to be complicated. You can simplify things quite a bit by sticking with one brand/ one system. Having said that, the grovia system was too big, hard and bulky for our 10 pound newborn (and Grovia products are pretty trim compared to most cloth diapering systems) so we used disposables for the first couple of months. It would look like he was sleeping on an incline because the grovia insert was so thick under his bum. Other cloth brands have special newborn sized diapers and inserts, but I chose not to invest the money for newborn cloth diapers that would only be used for a short time. We used Broody Chick 100% compostable disposable diapers for that period and the added convenience of the disposables was great during that initial difficult phase. We had some minor problems with diaper rash during that time, but the Triple Paste always cleared it up in a day (then we would go back to the Grovia Magic Stick). I breastfeed our baby so the diaper changes are more frequent (than formula fed babies). I wanted enough diapers to last three days. I did not want to do an extra load of laundry every two days. I kept adding covers, inserts and wipes until I had enough to last three days, hence the numbers above. If I had known in the beginning how many covers and inserts were going to be required, I would have saved some money by buying some of the larger Grovia combo deals. The 30 liter Brabantia garbage pail is all steel, easy to clean and self sealing (no stink outside the pail) and the perfect size for three days worth of Grovia wipes, covers, inserts and changing pads. It has an inner plastic pail with handle that makes trips to the laundry room a breeze. I reuse use the plastic liners (that came with the pail) by putting them in the sun and alternating every three days. The sun eliminates all the odor from the liners. I primarily used the 6 velcro covers (more convenient than snaps) through 11 months when our baby was finally able to figure out how to open them (and they are pretty worn looking velcro tabs at this point). Then I transitioned into primarily using the 9 snap covers and keeping the velcro covers only as backup. Grovia has a service that will remove the velcro tabs and replace with snaps for $6 a diaper. I wish they would offer a service to just replace the velcro, but I am happy with the durability of ALL the covers. They have held up better than I expected. Our son gets a lot of time in nature. We don't worry about his clothing or diapers getting dirty if he is having a great experience. The darker colors and the patterned shells hide dirt and grass soiling better than the light solid shells. The gentle cloth diaper detergents aren't great at getting out dirt or grass stains either. If I had to do it over, I would not buy any light colored solid covers. We bought some Grovia Booster pads to try before we went to the disposable overnight diapers, but our guy would soak through the regular "Soaker Pad" and the Booster Pad and wake up with wet clothes and bedding. There just wasn't enough absorbency for our breast fed baby. Changing him several times a night just added to the stress of those early days so we transitioned over to the disposables for night time and have been happy with that choice ever since. The Grovia Magic Stick is truly brilliant! It is all natural, effective and does not require you to dip your fingers into diaper ointment while wrangling a diaper onto a squirming baby several times a day! It also does not adversely affect the absorbency of cloth diapers they way regular ointments do. Do not use the Triple paste (or any regular diaper ointment) with your cloth diapers. The waxes and petroleum oils in regular diaper ointments coat the cotton fibers and prevent them from absorbing liquids. We tried several top rated "natural" ointments for our occasional diaper rash, but Triple Paste worked where the natural ones failed. We used it sparingly whenever bumps appeared (which was pretty rare compared to our disposable diapering friends). Here are the ingredients (which are not listed on Amazon at the time of this review):Grapeseed oil, Beeswax, Meadowfoam oil, Organic Jojoba oil, Shea oil, Organic rosehip and a proprietary blend of essential oils. Grovia wipes are fantastic. I wrote a separate review on these that compared the three types of wipes I bought. Grovia wipes were the best of the three and they work with the Prince Lionheart wipe warmer perfectly. Little Potty. We started our son on his Little Potty when he was about three months old. Whenever he would cue that he was "going", we would take him to his potty to go. Now at 12 months, we take him to his potty after every meal and when he cues and he uses the potty pretty consistently. It is easier to dump and rinse the little potty contents into the toilet than it is to change and wash his diapers so we encourage him to use his little potty as much as possible. He gets lots of positive feedback and interaction when he "makes it" to the potty so he enjoys using it. At 12 months, he is very comfortable sitting on a potty to pee or poo. We keep the Little Potty on the bathroom counter and stand with him while he is sitting on it. I have seen lots of people start out with the Little Potty on the floor, but if you have the counter space in your bathroom, this will save your knees and back and make it easier for you to interact with your baby while on the potty. In another month or two, we will transition it to the floor for his use. Grovia Little Bubbles diaper detergent. I have used the 5 top rated diaper detergents and honestly, I can't tell a lick of difference between them. I do a prewash with 1/2 indicated amount detergent and then a full wash with extra rinse using the full amount (per detergent instructions) of detergent. The most important thing is that you use a detergent designed for cloth diapers. Regular detergents have enzymes that will deteriorate the waterproof barriers in your cloth diapers. Cloth diaper detergents also do not have the dyes and perfumes that can irritate baby skin. I am currently using Grovia detergent and it is at least as good as the other top rated diaper detergents. I can't say that it is anymore effective at removing stains than the others. My diaper inserts are stained, but they are clean, soft and have no smell whatsoever when they come out of the dryer. I have always used cloth diaper detergent and I have never had to "strip" them. I use 14 ounces of wool dryer balls to dry my inserts and wipes. The dryer balls shaved ten minutes off the 80 minute dry cycle required to get a load of diapers dry. It takes only 70 minutes with the added wool balls. I will come back from time to time to update this review. I hope it was helpful for those trying to wade through all the cloth diapering info out there and find a simple set up!

Best Diaper Ointment Ever!
Okay, I have to confess that it's also the ONLY diaper ointment I've ever tried or used...but I seriously swear by this stuff and make it a part of every gift I give to new moms. Pros: 1. It's all natural - the ingredients are safe for your little one so there are no worries there 2. It's safe to use with cloth diapers - all natural ingredients means you don't have to worry about ingredients stripping your cloths 3. It's a stick so you just crank it up and roll it on - no touching the bum 4. You don't have to press hard to get it to spread on and you don't have to gob it on for it to work 5. It's a nice size that easily fits into your diaper bag 6. It smells good! Granted, I like the smell of tea tree oil but I think it's got a very pleasant oder I have used this since my 13-month old was born at the first sign of a pink bum...I can honestly say he has NEVER had a diaper rash...it's gotten pink/red in his crevice on occasion but with consistent use of this at every change when I see a little pink, it has gone away in a day or two. Now I know he's still little but he is gone from breast milk to cows milk and solids exclusively plus 9 teeth and we haven't had any major rash issues. Daycare has a stick and uses it, too, whenever he's a little pink and I think it has prevented anything from getting worse. We may just be lucky but I really think the ingredients are the key. My son also has extremely sensitive skin, including eczema breakouts so I would think he would be prone to diaper rashes as well, yet hasn't had any... Cons: 1. Because it's a roll-on the size of the stick is roughly the size of a quarter or half-dollar, which means you do need to spread the cheeks a bit to get in there...and you definitely want to rub down the edges when you first use it as they aren't rounded 2. Some people might not like the roll-on glide style...I could imagine if your little one had a really really bad rash how having to roll it across might hurt more than quick finger dabs... 3. It's a bit expensive for the amount you get and since I use it whenever his crevice is pink, I have already gone through 3 (including daycare's) since he was born...so that might be a deterrent for some...but I honestly think it is COMPLETELY worth the price! Hope that helps! :)

Definitely my first option for baby's butt
I found the GroVia Magic Stick on Amazon, kind of accidentally when I was browsing other diaper creams/balms. Most of the reviews were positive enough to sell me on it even though a baby diaper balm in stick form just literally seems to good to be true. I didn't know it could be possible not to get my hands covered in yucky cream after every diaper change. This is especially problematic for a person like me because I like to keep my nails long and I CANNOT stand when I get that stuff on my hands, especially A+D or Desitin - products I will rave about in regards to clearing up and preventing diaper rash, but also products I absolutely detest the smell of. I have used the BabyBum Glove-Saks trying to keep my hands ick-free but I find them too big for me to maneuver the way I have to and the cream ends up somehow getting transferred from the plastic to everywhere else. While I gave up trying to use them on little man, I find them quite awesome for picking up my dog's poop when I take her for a walk. I had high hopes for those gloves so I was a little bummed when they didn't live up to my expectations. I was skeptical to try anything else that seemed to so easily solve the problem of gunk on the hands so I didn't get my hopes up for GroVia... but I wouldn't have been disappointed if I did. I love this "magic" stick. First, it really does smell awesome. I just read a review where someone said she looked forward to diaper changing because of the lovely scent of GroVia. I absolutely concur. After dealing with yucky baby smells all day, it's really REALLY nice to take in a whiff of a gently scented balm. I love putting it on my son after cleansing very well with WaterWipes . It's a very refreshing fragrance that gives me a little pick me up after having to deal with the ammonia smell of urine and the unmentionable odors of poopy diapers. I really love this stick. The organic ingredients rock. The way the stick spreads is awesome. I can't stand the pasty thickness of most creams. If my son happens to reach down mid-change - I don't have to worry about him smearing thick layers of ointment all over himself and everything else in his reach. Beyond this, there's never any mystery as to how much to use. With other creams I'm always squeezing out too much or too little and either way that just wastes too much time. With GroVia, it's so much easier to measure what you are applying. I LOVE that. I very much disliked excess cream on my hands when I needed my hands free for more important things, like making sure I could close up little man's diaper before he decides it will be funny to pee in my face. I don't have one negative thing to say about this product. I was going to say I'd be a little nervous to use it in case of a major diaper rash issue - due to the fact that it seems so gentle and also there is a worry of transferring bacteria if you aren't careful enough. But then I got to thinking... so far this has been the furthest thing from my mind because since using GroVia - my son's little bum is super soft and never has even the slightest hint of redness or irritation. Hopefully GroVia will keep up the fabulous job of preventing diaper rash so that I won't have to find out what happens if I need to use it in the event of such a problem. If I do find myself in this situation, however, I promise I will update my post to reflect the results of GroVia on an actual diaper rash. I highly recommend this product. i use it at home and always have one in the diaper bag. Once I was rushing around on zero hours of sleep taking my little one to the hospital and did not at all remember deodorant - so I just wiped the top of it and put a little on to mask any potential odors I might have been emitting in that high stress situation. Don't think it's meant to be deodorant but I felt a little less self conscious. I certainly wasn't going to slather on Desitin or A&D to make me smell BETTER. Thanks GroVia, we love you!

Don't know what we'd do without it
Don't know what we'd do without our Magic Stick! Even if we didn't cloth diaper, I'd still use Magic Stick simply because it's a great product and is super sanitary--no spreading yucky diaper rash creams with your fingers! Also, it's all-natural and smells geat--what's not to like? One stick lasts a long time. I use it after every single diaper change and it's already lasted 4 mths--I bet we get another month's use out of this stick, too. Here is our foolproof system for avoiding ALL diaper rash: 1. Clean baby's bottom 2. Blow dry baby's bottom/pelvic area with a hairdryer (or other fan) on the "cool" setting until skin is nice and soft and dry. It is SO IMPORTANT to get this area truly dry--not just patted dry. Makes all the difference in the world. 3. Once skin is totally dry (this only takes about 30-60 seconds), apply a layer of Magic Stick to the butt crack and pelvic area (all the "sweet spots," as I call them). :D This forms a moisture barrier and protects the skin like a dream. 4. Put on diaper! (If you're not at home and do not have access to a hairdryer, it's not the end of the world, just pat the area dry as much as possible and air out/blow cool air with your mouth for a bit before putting on the Magic Stick. Just do what you can!) With our first child, we made the critical error of not employing the hairdryer method. Also, we only used the Magic Stick to treat pre-existing diaper rash, not to prevent it. Big mistake!! Our son still got diaper rash all the time! Not Magic Stick's fault--we weren't doing what needed to be done to prevent the rash in the first place. Follow the above instructions and I promise \you your child's buns will thank you!! Many of my friends, both cloth and disposable users, now swear by the Magic Stick. Well worth the money.

Convenient and effective product
This has been my go-to diaper stick for multiple babies. As a first time mom, I ordered it as a safe product to use with cloth diapers, but even after moving to disposable diapers, I stuck with it because it seemed so effective. It soothes discomfort right away and helps heal any redness. I apply this product to select areas that need help and and I also use a hypochlorous acid spray and have never had any major diaper rash issues. I can't imagine using anything else but those two products. It's especially convenient to never have to use fingers or even an applicator like with other diaper creams. It's just a stick, swipe it quickly and you're done. This would be great for a diaper bag or as a baby shower gift. I have one for all my little ones and just make sure to label each one with a permanent marker so they don't get mixed up.

I really enjoy this stick
At first, my husband and I were using desitin, but it was just such a mess to apply, and it would get into places (such as under the skin of the babies penis) that I had to work to remove it from. We obtained this product from a friend with a pretty decent review and have loved it the two months that we have been using it. Pros: 1. Ease of use - the stick applicator it very easy to use, and we can get everywhere that we need to without getting out hands messy. 2. Fragrance - The fragrance is pleasant, and not overbearing. I will be honest, to me, the fragrance smells like the rosehips, beeswax, and Grapesed (I have other products with similar fragrances), but the back of the product DOES say, "a proprietary blend of essential oils," so that may contribute. 3. The product is all natural - Even the essential oils are natural, or they would not be allowed to add it to their label, so that makes me feel more comfortable. 4. Rated for Cloth Diapers - Even says so on the product. We have not had an issue with this claim. 5. Organic - =) Speaks for itself. Cons: 1. Not sure what is in this, "proprietary blend of essential oils." This product is great at preventing diaper rash, and if his bottom happens to obtain a rash, I don't have to use anything else to get it to go away. MY BEST ADVICE is to wipe them down and fan their bottom with the diaper until they're dry before applying the product. =) This has seemed to help a ton in avoiding diaper rash!

The best. Period.
I absolutely love this little glue stick. So far one tube has lasted me almost 10 months. I use it every time I change my kiddo and so far no diaper rash. I actually purchased a bunch of expensive ingredients to make my own diaper cream months ago but this works so well and is so convenient that I am just going to buy another one. To use it...first use a wet wipe, then dry off their little butt with a clean dry washcloth (I keep one right on the changing table and just get a new one out every morning). After they're dry, grab the balm and goop up their butt and lower belly. Simple, easy, and no other tools required. Pros: -You do not have to get your hands goopy to use it. -It's in the most convenient of shapes. -It is cloth diaper friendly -So far no diaper rash Cons: None! If I had to really pull a con out of this it would be that you need two hands to twist the lid off. A snap cap would be slightly more user friendly. To solve this problem I just have the cap sitting on the changing table and put the stick in without twisting the lid on. Basically it sits upside down resting in the cap so I can just grab it and flick the lid with my thumb. Like I said, I've been using it for 10 months so there is no worry of it drying out using it this way either.

Glue stick doesn't beat the magic cream
Diaper Rash is some bad stuff. It equals an unhappy baby and an unhappy baby equals no sleep. I have been using this product as a way to avoid diaper rash. It is extremely easy to use. However, being a first time parent, I had a lot to learn. First off, this product works well, but you still have to make sure baby is completely dry before applying or you will still have diaper rash. Secondly, when the baby does have diaper rash, use a liberal amount of aquaphor rather than this product. This works well as a quick application. However in the long run, you still need your tub of magic cream (aquaphor) if a rash develops. Since I have been applying this product correctly, I have had great success from the baby developing diaper rash (knocks on wood) when used in conjunction with the magic cream. I hope I send you positive vibes of sleep with the approval of the product. It doesn't do everything, but if you dry completely the baby and apply a liberal amount, it is a quick application when you are in a pinch. Reason for 4 stars is cause in the end, you still need the magic cream. I recommend this product for those traveling and putting it in the diaper bag. Everyday home use, magic cream wins.

Awesome stuff!
This is the only stuff safe for use while cloth diapering so right away i was hooked. It also smells good, is all natural, and it works. We don't have to use it very often so our stick has lasted since birth, 10.5 months now!!! I recommend these for anyone with a baby. I actually recommend it all the time :)

It's good for on the go (if it's not broken) when ...
Product seems ok but arrived totally broken (like in two pieces, the bottom spinner part and the rest of it) so I could not spin the bottom to get the stick to pop up. :( Frustrating but not worth sending back... It's good for on the go (if it's not broken) when you don't want to have to use your fingers, but not my favourite cream I use all the time (skinfix)
