as a person of color i have to ask are these suitable for left handed peeps?

As a bald person I can tell you that they work perfectly when used with the right hand, but when used with the left hand they dispense what appears to be small toy cars so I would not recommend.

How on earth does this grind. Do you really need to take thw lid of each time?

Yes the lids just pop off and then you hold the top middle to grind. It's great as it's nice a clean and no pepper or slat ends up all over the kitchen surface. You can also change the thickness of the grind.
