A Frequency Dictionary of Arabic (Routledge Frequency Dictionaries)

A truly wonderful aid for a student in Media Arabic (4th Year): saves me time and lets me know how important a word is. It won't replace your Hans Wehr or your other comprehensive dictionary but helps smooth the road. Also, reading through the entries reminds me of how much I do know, which is heartening and encouraging, as I find my way through the maze that is the Arabic language. A must have for an Advanced to Media Arabic student.

This is a truly outstanding resource for anyone looking to build their Arabic vocabulary and take their Arabic skills to a higher level. The only reason this is not a 5 star review is because the authors omitted an alphabetical index in English. As a student of Arabic, when you may not know the word in Arabic but remember looking up the word and remember the English, it is really crucial to have that. Unfortunately, with it missing, you are left to jog your memory and get lucky and remember, search for an extended period of time looking for the word, or simply give up because you've spent to much time. As a person looking to maximize my time, this was a big negative. Having said that, I'd still buy this book for the wealth of details in the book.

In addition to presenting a comprehensive list of the most common Arabic words, its myriad other features make this book invaluable. Authentic sample sentences provide essential context for word use, and alternate uses are presented with the word whenever an additional particle or other contextual cue changes the general meaning. The thematic tables included alone make for a fantastic at-a-glance guide to topical vocabulary. All in all, this book has been a great experience.

This is a great resource for vocabulary in the Arabic language and more importantly, there is many connectors words available in this dictionary.

This dictionary is a must have for those studying the Arabic language. very nicely laid out, includes usages of the words. Well worth the investment.

I've been studying Arabic for almost three years now. Since I am comfortable using a regular dictionary and know enough about roots and forms to take educated guesses at the meanings of words I don't feel that I needed to buy this book since it was rather expensive. That being said, this is a fantastic book and I highly recommend it for anyone in their first two years of studying Arabic. I still learn words out of it, of course, I just think I could have saved the money. If you are relatively new to Arabic: buy it, study it, make flash cards.

Excellent book. Excellent series.

Literary and Quranic, not so much. Even children's books (like Kamel Kilani's) are full of words (even roots) you won't find here.

This is absolutely my favourite book for learning Arabic. No question. It helps you focus on the most common words and gives you excellent sentence examples so you know how to use them accurately. Like in the Hans Wehr dictionary, in the back, it also organises them according to the root letters, which really helps me understand how words relate to each other and originate their meaning. it also has sections for words in a particular topic area. I have owned the quite heavy original hard copy for several years, and a few months ago I bought the kindle version too because I love this book so much. Now this otherwise heavy book is available on my iPhone any time, without the weight. The rendering of the Arabic letters in the Kindle app is also excellent. By contrast many kindle books don't render Arabic well.

I haven't found this dictionary as useful as I had thought it would be. It has to be admitted that a lot of work has gone into the production of this work. But to my mind the writer has become so concerned with the question of frequency of appearance of words that he became more interested in the texts he was scanning than the words and their individual characteristics. In short I agree with those reviewers who claim that the examples are inordinately long and inappropriate for a dictionary and to reviewers who say they enjoy reading them I would say go to the actual sources, newpaper articles and the like. The object of a dictionary is to make the meaning of words as clear as possible. Instead of inserting these long extracts from current literature, it would have been better to have tackled the question of large numbers of synonyms and homonyms and so this is also why the listing of the words in English is needed, as someone suggested. If the dictionary had been made in this way it would have been of very much more help to all students of Arabic.
