how water tight is the lid? If i have it in a cooler and it tips over will soup leak out?

The lid is great.  It doesn't leak around the edges or the vent hole near the middle.  I pack my wife's lunches and include soups and stews and they can end up on their side during transport.  No leaks.  I hand wash the lid as my dishwasher uses very high temperatures which warp plastic lids.  When the food is microwaved, it stays warm for a long time, as the ceramic heats up and stays warm through lunch.  I've frozen foods in them and have no problem with freezing.  I thaw them first before heating in a microwave.

I did a little investigating in response to your question. French White CorningWare is made in China (disappointing to learn). Does the lid loose integrity after multiple times in the freezer and dishwasher?

We own 5 of the mugs and have used them since at least 2009. I never placed them in the freezer, but did use the mugs with lids in the microwave and washed them in the dishwasher. Over time, the inner rims of the lids  have become brittle and have broken on all 5 lids . I contacted the parent company when I could not find replacements online and was told that lids could no longer be purchased separately.

My daughter wants to make French Onion Soup which requires the mug to go in the oven for the cheese to melt. Does that sound feasible?

This mug is oven-safe, but the lid isn't.  I don't see why it wouldn't work for making onion soup as long as it holds the amount you want.
